Questions about great drives in NY

Hey folks.... A local Florida car club I am a member of a planning a cruise up in NJ and NY. Mostly NY. It's a trips we do yearly in early October. As an idea we've made two trips to Tail of the Dragon, Moonshiners, Devil's Whip and one trip into Virginia and the foothill roads there. It's a weeklong trip we do each year and it's about 10 cars that head up and we love to hit great roads on the trip.

This year we are hitting NY and we're in the planning stages. Since we've never been into NY for this trip, I'm posting this up to see if anybody in the NY area could give me some pointers on great roads we can hit while up there. So who can give me some suggestions on some challenging/fun roads we can hit. Anything along the lines of Tail of the Dragon?

Here is the initial route we are planning. Of course.... If you all can suggest anything .. I and the Viper would really appreciate it!

That would be awesome. What we are looking for is primarily great, winding roads in the hills/mountains. In addition to that if you have any good spots for us to hit on the way, that would be phenomenal as well!

Thanks for the Breakfast tip. Day six is the trip back to Virginia to hop on the Autotrain heading south. A good spot for breakfast would be good. I don't know what time we'll be rolling through Edison, but I can figure that out. We have to be in Lorton, VA by 2:30 or 3:00PM.

I don't know what days you're planning this trip, but there's a really good Cars & Coffee in the Washington DC area early on Saturday mornings. You never know what's going to show up...

Hard to tell from the map, but make sure when you go through the Catskills that you drive the stretch of Rt23A between Palenville and Tannersville. Very cool road with some tight turns and nice waterfalls, including Kaaterskill Falls which is a 1 mile round trip hike. Google it for some pictures. Not sure if the group will want to hike that, especially with nice cars as the clay gets stuck to your shoes!

Another road is after crossing Bear Mountain Bridge (near West Point) heading east, stay to the right after the bridge and there's lots of elevation and twistys.

OK Guys... was in CES last week so I did not get a chance to get back to you all...

Just before I left I mentioned the replies to our main "planner" and he had a couple of questions... so here goes...

When you mention "the Gap" are you referring to the Delaware River Gap? And if so, which road? The old mine road? His initial sketches were using "old mine road" and then "river road" from Stroudsburg north to Port Jervis, where we will head West along the Hawks nest road...Rt 97.

Does that make sense?

At Bear Mountain Bridge, are you referring to 9W right?... also, should we head North or South after the bridge?

Our planner had planned on 23A, but was happy that you suggested heading past Kaaterskill Falls...as he wasn't going to go that far...but seeing the route now, it looks like a great road. He'll work it in somehow....

The roads here sometimes have multiple names. On this map it shows as Route 6 or Highland Rd in blue highlight. This is the road you'd want to travel. If you're heading over the Bear Mountain Bridge heading east, you'd want to go east on Rt6. This section shown between the bridge and Peekskill is downhill, windy and lots of fun! There's also a scenic viewpoint that you can turn into. It's on the right hand side of the road when you're heading east on Rt6 so no worries about cutting across the double yellow.

Here's the Gap to Hawk's nest route along the Delaware river. I've driven the northern leg on the Jersey side on River road and it's scenic but it's a little rough in spots. I'm going to drive the whole span on the Jersey side this weekend or next in my Jeep and let you know the condition. I was up there a few weeks ago with the wife and a bald eagle flew by about 50 feet in front of us 25 feet off the road. Some huge bears up there too.

OK so...Steve... the Bear Mountain route was already on the route that our planner had set up. Your recommendation sealed the deal through because he did not really know whether or not it was worth it. Thanks!

V10enomous... We were planning on the South / East side of the river, going down "old mine road" vs the North / West side that you are showing. Is there a big difference? Have you run both? If there is a difference, we'll run the better of the two for sure!


Folks... honestly.... you don't know how much this helps... thanks for taking the time! We take these cruises every year and we experiment with different routes from time to time. Keep some, drop others, etc. Having this info in advance is awesome as it takes some of the guesswork out. If I can EVER be of any assistance.... please let me know!

We arrive in Lorton just outside DC by 10:00AM and it will be roughly 11 to noon before we could make it to the DC area.... Will this still be around? Cars and Coffee for us in SoFla are done by 10:00AM because of the heat... however... don't think you;ll have that issue in DC in October.... We just might try and hit it if we can time it right and the event is still going at noon.

Some of those cars are awesome... love the Merc Gullwing! Seems like a crazy expensive car to be out at a cars and coffee! Definitely higher end that what we get in SoFla.... down here we get the new Ferrari guys (complete with "holier than thou" attitude) mostly...

I couldn't get Bing maps to draw the route on the east side of the Delaware river unless I created a walking route. It kept tracking over to rte 209 on the PA side so I think the east side may be rough. I may take a drive up there this weekend to check it out and see if the entire span is open to vehicles.

Looks like you're going to miss it.. It officially ends at 9:30 and most people don't hang around much after that. 7:30am is about prime time. This C&C seems to be about unique vehicles, I'm always amazed with what shows up:

I took my Grand Cherokee from the Delaware Water Gap on River road and Old Mine road almost all the way to Port Jervis today after the morning snow. It's a nice park road drive but it's almost desolate and it is one lane controlled by a traffic light at one section by the Gap for about a half mile and there are some pretty narrow sections and it's either 15 or 35 mph all the way through. The road seemed OK but there were some pot holes which is typical during winter when the plows come out. I don't think you would have a problem provided that your car is not lowered. There are a few picnic areas and beaches along the way and the Walpack Inn Pub and Restaurant which is like a hunting lodge. I took a brief video for you and also found some video on Youtube of what it looks like in good weather.

LuisV, I see that on Day 5 you're coming through CT. A great drive can be had through the Litchfield, Goshen area. In fact, I'll PM you where I work in Morris, CT for a great lunch/dinner/resort stop. You'll love this place and scenery.

You can just take 209 on the PA side it runs parallel. Not as scenic but much smoother.

If I am not mistaken... This prowler is Trey. He is a member of SSP and used to live down in Florida. He moved up to NY and recently upgraded that Prowler and has a 6.1L Hemi in it!

Yessir, Trey and I go back a bit. We had a Prowler drive to Hawk's nest and High Point. The Hemi Kat is pretty fun. That shot just got him into a select group for Chrysler Nats at Carisle this year.

Didn't notice when you guys planned on going, but if you do this in late June ( 26-29 ) , you could wander a bit to the West and hit the Sahlen's Six Hours at the Glen. Fun time to hang out with
all the SRT folks, Viper owners, and watch the two GTS-Rs and the GT3 Viper race at one of the legendary tracks in the United States.

LuisV-I live 15 minutes from Gloversville. There is a very scenic ride around the Great Sacandaga Lake which isn't far from Gloversville and has windy roads and hairpin turns that you can enjoy! There is also a way to get to 9N where if you turn left then it will bring you to Lake George (scenic ride and area also) or if you turn right then it will bring you to the historic Saratoga Springs.
