Recently at the track, my '99 ACR died with a cam position sensor code. I pulled the cam sensor out, it's in pieces. It appears the timing chain is busted, as the cam doesn't move when spinning the crank (just a small hint I know). The cam is also sticking out further as the new cam sensor won't go all the way in. I can also feel the timing chain through the cam sensor hole and it doesn't feel very tight. Fantastic.
I took the drivers side valve cover off, and 1 pushrod is busted in half, and it appears the lifter is gone too (I pulled a roller from a lifter from out of the cam area). I'm guessing the valve got smacked by the cylinder, but the crazy part is that the engine wasn't under a big load when it happened. It had been missing for like 30 seconds and then it just went, so either the chain stretched before it went, or the pushrod/lifter went and rolled around and eventually took the cam/chain with it. The pushrods were the weak link the in valve train so I'm hopeful that I didn't bend a valve
I've built and wrenched on every inch of this car over the years, but now with a baby and a toddler, I just don't have the time or energy to rip the damn thing completely apart yet again (this would be the 3rd time taking the heads off of it). The car has a ported top end, stock cam, and all other supporting track mods (big brakes, freshly rebuilt koni's, baffled oil pan, catch cans, seats, etc). Made 525hp at the wheels.
I couldn't be more frustrated. I had just finished welding up a corsa exhaust on the thing so I could take my daughter for rides without worrying about her getting ear damage. I guess I'll get a quote from one or two places, but I also really don't want to worry about anyone else doing a half assed job on it. Rant over.
