    Fuse Box Heat Shield

On LABrit's delivery pictures I noticed what appears to be a heat shield between the fuse box and the driver's side exhaust. Is this something new? If this is factory installed, I assume it is a new addition to solve a potential heat damage problem. For those with recent deliveries (mine was April and did not have the shield), do your cars have a fuse box shield? Or was the shield on LABrit's car dealer installed? In any case, I had just built a similar shield out of carbon fiber with a gold foil reflective surface. I also wrapped the main wiring harness and the PCM harness with DEI Heat Wrap 3000 for protection.

It's Calvo heatshield. All the links are in my build thread.

Actually it is not Calvo's PDC shield, we have made our own and installed them with most header installs now for almost 2 years, they are $85.

    Mark,

Thanks for the explanation. That shield looks like a quality product. In the "for what it's worth" category, with a little experimentation I figured out that gold foil reflective material on the outside of the shield is not sufficient to keep the back side of my shield cool enough to suit me. Using DEI Floor and Tunnel Shield II on the engine side of the shield did, however, work great. Looks like you used the same type of additional heat protection in the last photo you posted above.

Pappy you have a sharp eye, I couldn't see the shield on LAbrit's car.
Did you wrap/shield anything else besides the main and pcm harnesses?

Just those so far, but I noticed the water line to the oil-water heat exchanger on the passenger side was very close to the exhaust manifold. In fact, one of the hose clamps was resting against the manifold, so I will move that a little. I am also building a mold for a carbon fiber heat shield under the air box up front. I am building in an air gap with insulation on the bottom of the shield. I'm sure some of the heat shields currently on the market are just as good.

Any car with headers should have the front upstream O2 wires wrapped as well as the main wiring harness near the PDC (fuse box), the EVAP line under the PCM, and the ABS lines along the frame on driver's side. I would also wrap the coolant lines running to the oil cooler and even the radiator overflow tank.

So this evening I'm inspecting my car before an Auto X on Saturday and what do I find? The vapor tube under the fuse box has collapsed in a 3" section due to heat. It likely happened the last time I drove it, on June 20th at a road race event. If it happened before the race then I've just been really really lucky it hasn't stranded me. I'll be ordering one of the shields from our sponsors as well as getting it replaced by my dealer. I also see a section of an O2 wire that is a little melted though on the passenger side upstream sensor. I'll have that inspected and fixed/shielded as necessary.

I'm posting because it's true, it's notif but when you're going to melt something with headers.

Edit: aaaand my drivers side O2 wire is cooked worse than the passenger. Damn.

One of the first signs of a melted evap line on the drivers side is that you may see venting pressure when you try and fill up with fuel or you may not be able to get fuel into the car. We have all found these little areas that need more attention over time and in varying conditions, you just have to be diligent at checking your cars over time to time, even stock cars at the track.

I've just ordered the heat shield from Mark and am sitting at Roanoke while they replace O2s and wiring. We definitely have great sponsors who can fit us in during a pinch and have quality parts available for immediate shipping.

    Thank you to both dealers!

Is the fuse box the only heat shield product needed to be added in? I though I remembered seeing some other sponsor/vendor making another type of shield that Calvo didn't offer.

Are you thinking the airbox shield by DSE?

Nope. I already have that. Some other engine bay shield due to header install that is not sold by Calvo, that someone else used to make/sell. In additon to the other heat shield item I'm thinking of, this other company also made a fuse box shield and sold both as a kit or sold the shields and wire heat wrap as a kit.

I used the DEI product to protect the clutch lines.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking of Woodhouse when Mark Jorgensen was still there installing the Arrow packages.

You could very well be right. I just remember seeing a kit of more than one heat shield and Calvo only sold one of the items, the fuse box shield (not knocking Calvo). I checked partsrack and viperstore and it is not them. Maybe it was a product Nth Moto sold if not Mark?

    Anyways... moving on

    Thanks for the replies

Correct. I got my car from Woodhouse and Mark installed a fuse box shield, a DSE intake shield and some heat wrapping around wiring harnesses.
