Throwing a P0315 code- No crank sensor learned

Recently had the engine replaced due to the R28 recall. This morning I drove the car to get coffee and everything was working as expected however, when I left the coffee place I noticed I had a CEL immediately upon start up. The car is throwing a P0315 - No crank sensor learned.

    1. Has anyone had this problem in a Gen V before? I saw other gens have had the problem.

    2. Where is the crank sensor located?

I've unhooked my battery and am waiting 15 minutes to hook back up again to see if the code gets thrown again on start up. If the code does come up again then my plan is to get under the car and make sure the dealer plugged everything in. If everything looks like it's connected correctly I guess I'll be taking the car back to the dealer on Tuesday.

Sounds like a programming issue but not sure. Please disclose the verdict

I agree, very odd. If the car can't detect the crank sensor, it shouldn't run at all. Call your tech and let them deal with it. Especially since it's a brand new engine. Might also contact Mark J at Woodhouse, he might have an idea.

Got under the car and the sensor and harness were connected tight so it's off to the dealer again..

I thought so too. Starts and runs fine like there is nothing wrong.

Note post 18 in the following thread about issues after having an engine replaced (although the problem in that thread was the car going into limp mode): http://driveviper.com/forums/threads...l=1#post178868

When I had my engine replaced I believe the same code came up and the car would go into limp mode. It turns out when they installed it they didn't reflash it, once they did it was good.

Good to hear that it should be an easy fix!

I wonder if that code results from failing to learn the "Tooth Error Correction" parameter when they replaced the engine. Since each engine has slightly different tolerances the PCM must learn how to correct the signals from the crank sensor to what is the ideal expected values. This procedure must be done whenever the engine is replaced. Not just a Viper thing it applies to virtually every engine that uses a crank sensor. My GTS had this problem when I first got it. Apparently the TEC was not properly learned at the factory (happened to several cars I'm told). They had to do a "TEC" relearn and then all was good. In my case the TEC relearn was a real hassle for my tech as Chrysler via a software update had removed the screens in the dealer computers that are needed to do this. Dick Winkles walked my tech through how to get it done. I presume they have fixed the software by now.

That's a good thought. It's got to be software related, because as we all mentioned above, of there were something wrong, I don't think the engine would start or run correctly at al.

Yes correct re learn has to be done on a new engine for tolerances.

Thanks to Mark for his insight, I knew he would come through.

OP - Sounds like you need to get it back to the dealer.

Took back to the dealer this afternoon and they "relearned" the computer.

In and out of the shop in less than an hour with no appointment.

Can this happen without having your motor replaced?

I saw this happen with some other members I know. Car seemed to drive fine. Just kept showing the code.

Bumping this thread up. I don't know for certain but I was told our 14 gts had a check engine light for crank sensor prior us purchasing. They brought it to a local dodge dealer and had it replaced. Haven't driven it much since repaired but it ildes at 1000 rpm and I'm not getting any codes. Dealer suggest coming back in, shocker.
