What oil are you running.. Mobile 1 or pennzoil ultra?

Mobil 1 usage was 0-40W too. Oil has not been the issue, both Mobil 1 and Shell/Pennzoil are at the top, just new recommendation since 2013.

Also the Ram 6.4L motors in the HD trucks were developed and durability tested with and specify Pennzoil Ultra 0-40.

sparkrn...yes. I am using Mobil 1 0W-40 in our street driven Gen I's and II's, ( and our Gen III, and IV's). For track use and for climates hotter than Indy, many go to Mobil 1 15W-50.

Business or not, Shell/Pennzoil got together with the SRT Engineers and formulated a 0-40W specifically for the Viper ( they did not have prior ). Used Mobil 1 for years and still think it is good stuff, but we switched to Shell/Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in the shop --- only synthetic made out of natural gas and claimed to be 25% cleaner than other synthetics. Makes sense considering what it is formulated from!

Im sure you know more about this than me...Ill still tend to believe its more of a market strategy as there is a lot of "claiming" going on. They know many will use strictly what the manual says..

Yeah, this is what I thought with respect to the rear differential fluid. Boy was I wrong. I put Pennzoil in but little did I know, it doesn't contain the friction modifier. My diff started making horrible noises immediately. I bought a $10 bottle of the modifier, put it in, and it's been quiet ever since. That's the last time I viewed the manufacturer's recommendation as "marketing".

That's all it is - marketing. Same thing with tires that come on stock vehicles. They buy 100,000 tires from whoever gives them the best deal. It used to be Mobile 1 that was on the fill caps of some high end cars, now it's Pennzoil. I suggest you look at the oils themselves and drain intervals as that will tell you who has the best additives package and that's the oil you want. It's not the base oil that gets "used up" it's the additive package ( ie. anti- corrosion additives, lubricity additives, dispersants, etc, etc, etc...). Drain interval is probably the easiest way to first compare and narrow down your choices as only the best oils will let you run them longer than others.

Hmm, great info Bill! I always believed in Mobile 1 and in my old Gen II's back in early 2000's that's all I used. But something told me to just stick with factory oil since there have been some engine failures especially since I drive my car for what it was built for. I haven't had issues and I was thinking of switching but now may not with this information. Thank you Bill!
