I run Mobil. Easy to get at Walmart in 5 quart jugs. But I'm sure this thread is about to turn into a good show.

Is it the oil that's been eating these engines?

SRT will stand behind the oil that was recommended by each GEN.

Pennzoil. You folks in the US can get it a lot easier than we can in Canader.

Dick Winkles did not recommend the Mobil One Turbo Diesel that I used to use. I'm using Penzoil now in my GTS but would feel fine using Mobil 1. In fact in my TA 2.0 I'm using Mobil One 15w50.

Fry oil is ok, but you'd better be sure you start with a good base stock:

Whatever quality 0-40 synthetic oil they have on the shelf. Coke, Pepsi, whatever...... lol.

I understand I might be the odd one out here, but I honestly don't believe it will make that much of a difference.

The engineers at SRT designed the Gen V engine in conjunction with Shell. As a result, Shell formulated Pennzoil Ultra 0-40 synthetic specifically for our cars. In fact, it is recommended for all SRT engines. I tend to put my faith in the guys who actually built the engine, and designed the tolerances around this oil. Nothing else goes in my car, ever, and it's easy to get at any Chrysler dealership. They stock gobs of it, because as I said, it is supposed to go in all SRT engines. I was recently on a road trip, and noticed that I was at the bottom of the safe line, so I decided to hit the next dealership on my route: Moose Jaw, SK, Canada. Guess what? They had a quart ready to go for me instantly.........

Lest we forget, The ACR Owners Supplement recommends 15-50 for those who choose to exercise the car at the track.

I am not aware that Pennzoil offers a 15-50 so, Mobil 1 it is.

I tend to think it has more to do with business and marketing than engineering...

Business or not, Shell/Pennzoil got together with the SRT Engineers and formulated a 0-40W specifically for the Viper ( they did not have prior ). Used Mobil 1 for years and still think it is good stuff, but we switched to Shell/Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in the shop --- only synthetic made out of natural gas and claimed to be 25% cleaner than other synthetics. Makes sense considering what it is formulated from!

They formulated a special formula specifically for a car that sells 700 units a year?

Yes, Jon...................it is now used in all the SRT vehicles , but straight from Engineers mouths at SRT. Shell even acknowledged they had not done something like this before, but sure no different than making a custom DOT tire for 200-400 ACRs.

Unrelated but relevant - all of the Honda powered cars changed from X to Y oil mid week at the Indy 500 practice after 2 engine failures. Oil can make a difference under extreme conditions, but not sure IF there is a correct or incorrect answer here other than if you follow the manufacturers instructions at least you have that going for you if there is an issue. Mobil 1 seems to be the tried and true go-to oil, but that does not mean Penzoil is not as good or better for this application. Has anyone tried to correlate engine failure with oil type/weight? Could be interesting.
