I recently returned from a 2,800 mile round trip to Mojave California from my home in Bremerton. I had a great drive in the Gen V followed by 2 days of fun. The Mojave Magnum is run on the Mojave Air and Spaceport 12,000 foot runway. They set up timing lights at the one half mile, mile, and mile and a half, so your time slip shows all 3. I ran 179.2 there last year in my 1999 RT-10, but this was the first time running the Gen V. I hadn't had a chance to run it on a drag strip to practice launches, so it took a couple of runs start to get the feel. By the way, the GTS is totally stock and has 13,000 miles on it.
The Saturday weather was cool, but had strong head and cross winds which really caused problems for the motorcycles. Sunday was nicer with minimal winds and even a slight tailwind. It was 60 degrees, which was nice for making horsepower. I only got 3 runs on Saturday, but with less cars on Sunday I was able to get 7 runs. My early runs were getting me used to the sound and feel for the shifts and each run improved. At the end of the day I had 5 runs ranging from 190.8 to my best of 193.5. With the gearing I had to shift to sixth at 182 mph and I was surprised how well sixth gear pulled. When I went through the traps I was still accelerating. I think if I had another 1/8 or 1/4 mile I would have hit 200. It was also a rush to glance at the digital speedometer and see 190+ showing.
I talked a lot with some of the veterans and their feel was that I would need about 600 rwhp to get to 200 in the mile and a half . I am not sure if I want to spend the money to modify the car to get to the next level. I think for now I will be content with the 193.5.
On another note, I was in the grid line and a black Gen 4 ACR with the wing removed was behind me. We were talking and I found out he was from Kingston Washington which is 15 miles from me. I had never seen the car and to have it directly behind me in a field of 120 cars was a bit of a surprise. I didn't see what times he ran, but I think they were pretty fast.
I am an not a great drag racer, but I really enjoyed running the car where you can just let it go. They may not be great times for really skilled drivers or ones with modifications to the motor, but it was fun for me and I would do it again.
I forgot to mention some of the REALLY fast times I saw. They had a twin turbo Ford GT that ran 235. His wife had run it through at 231 at a previous race. The wildest one I saw was a turbocharged Hyabusa motorcycle with 500 rwhp. He ran over 200 in the 1/2 mile, 230+ in the mile and 256 mph in the mile and a half. Now that is what I call fast!
