2016 Mojave Magnum results for my 2014 GTS

I recently returned from a 2,800 mile round trip to Mojave California from my home in Bremerton. I had a great drive in the Gen V followed by 2 days of fun. The Mojave Magnum is run on the Mojave Air and Spaceport 12,000 foot runway. They set up timing lights at the one half mile, mile, and mile and a half, so your time slip shows all 3. I ran 179.2 there last year in my 1999 RT-10, but this was the first time running the Gen V. I hadn't had a chance to run it on a drag strip to practice launches, so it took a couple of runs start to get the feel. By the way, the GTS is totally stock and has 13,000 miles on it.

The Saturday weather was cool, but had strong head and cross winds which really caused problems for the motorcycles. Sunday was nicer with minimal winds and even a slight tailwind. It was 60 degrees, which was nice for making horsepower. I only got 3 runs on Saturday, but with less cars on Sunday I was able to get 7 runs. My early runs were getting me used to the sound and feel for the shifts and each run improved. At the end of the day I had 5 runs ranging from 190.8 to my best of 193.5. With the gearing I had to shift to sixth at 182 mph and I was surprised how well sixth gear pulled. When I went through the traps I was still accelerating. I think if I had another 1/8 or 1/4 mile I would have hit 200. It was also a rush to glance at the digital speedometer and see 190+ showing.

I talked a lot with some of the veterans and their feel was that I would need about 600 rwhp to get to 200 in the mile and a half . I am not sure if I want to spend the money to modify the car to get to the next level. I think for now I will be content with the 193.5.

On another note, I was in the grid line and a black Gen 4 ACR with the wing removed was behind me. We were talking and I found out he was from Kingston Washington which is 15 miles from me. I had never seen the car and to have it directly behind me in a field of 120 cars was a bit of a surprise. I didn't see what times he ran, but I think they were pretty fast.

I am an not a great drag racer, but I really enjoyed running the car where you can just let it go. They may not be great times for really skilled drivers or ones with modifications to the motor, but it was fun for me and I would do it again.

I forgot to mention some of the REALLY fast times I saw. They had a twin turbo Ford GT that ran 235. His wife had run it through at 231 at a previous race. The wildest one I saw was a turbocharged Hyabusa motorcycle with 500 rwhp. He ran over 200 in the 1/2 mile, 230+ in the mile and 256 mph in the mile and a half. Now that is what I call fast!

Sounds like a blast! What are the odds of meeting the ACR?

    Thanks for sharing.

Nice passes! I wish I had been able to make it, but my car didn't get delivered until Apr 13. I got a text from a buddy with the white C7 Z06 (stage 1 aero) - maybe the one parked next to you in the photo? He ran 158.8/184.9/197.4. Car is stock except for an intake and filter. The pressure altitude is very high at Mojave, so the forced induction cars have a big advantage in horsepower. Your times were excellent for a NA motor!! Congrats!

BTW, how stable was the Gen IV with the wing removed?

I didn't get a chance to ask him about it, but he didn't mention any problems. I found out that Dan Cragin had done a lot of engine work on it and it was very strong. When I see him up here we will compare notes.

Very cool. I did not know they did 1.5 mile events.

FWIW, I did 191.4mph in the Texas Mile in March with approx 625rwhp in my Gen IV with the .796 5th gear. Ran a bit shorter rear wheel which gave me an approximate 3.33 rear end. We were hitting the rev limiter at the finish line with this setup.

Sounds like you had a great time and represented well at the Mojave Mile. That was a lot of runs, more than enough to get really comfortable at speeds approaching 200mph. Not too many can make that claim. Thanks for sharing.

It is a lot of fun. It was my third time there and it gets habit forming. My 99 RT-10 was maxed out unless I wanted to supercharge, so it was nice to get a newer more comfortable street machine that could run in the 190s. The announcer there though I was a bracket racer because the 5 runs were so close.

So what class are you running the car in out there now, and if you make mods, what class then? I guess SSE right now, and if you mod you have to move to A3?

Those boosted motorcycles are insane fast - the power to weight ratio is bonkers. I ran 230+ mph on a supercharged GSXR 1000 at Bonneville - did it once, and that was enough terror for me.

193 is great. I guess with a little more room, these really are the 200 mph cars they are advertised to be.

FrgMstr Because I was totally stock I could run in SSE. I was allowed to use 3 point belts, but needed the Nomex suit, full face helmet and all the 205 mph class stuff. If I have any mods I have to run in A2 class which is also 205 mph. In A2 I am not required to have a roll bar in the Viper GTS, but need to have 5 or 6 point harness and arm restraints. I will have to decide whether I want to spend a lot of bucks to get another 100 horsepower to get me to 200.

Jabba, I agree about insane motorcycles. At Mojave you only have to break the lights at your speed, but they told me at Bonneville you have to hold that speed for a mile. Now that is scary!

I went through tech there and the P Zeros Y were approved for 205 mph. I had just put on a new set of P Zeros before I left. By the way, I wound up driving in some heavy downpours on my way home and they were great. No hydroplaning at all.

Sharpman, I was blown away by that bike. I wish I would have gotten some pictures. It was a clean bike with the turbo that made it 500 hp. Almost 1 hp per pound minus rider. I just can't imagine hanging on at that speed. Needless to say that was the fastest vehicle of the weekend.

Several people seemed interested in running their cars at The Mojave Magnum, so I wanted to let people know they will be running another event this year on October 8th and 9th. The registration doesn't open until July, but be sure to enter early as they only take 120 vehicles. You can check at their site at http://www.mojavemile.com/

One wouldn't be able to hang on at well below those speeds; it's the seat holding the rider in place (obviously it can't be flat).

That is awesome. I was just wondering this morning if anyone had actually gotten a G5 to 200+mph like they claim it can do. And where someone could actually accomplish that. Sounds like a lot of fun.

You are correct on the seat and the fairing was set up to allow the rider to hang on. I wish I could find a photo of it to show the setup.

Bleed Viper - It was a real rush, but if there would have been another 1/4 mile of track I think it would have gone 200 as it was still pulling strong. Another way for me to go 200+ would be to get another 150 hp.

They just published the final results from the 2016 Mojave Magnum. My run of 193.5 put me in 4th in SSE class behind a 2014 Nissan GTR (200.0), 2015 Porsche 911 Turbo S (197.9), and a 2015 Corvette Z06 (195.0). It was a cool day and the boosted cars really were pulling a lot of power. Considering it was the first time for me with this car I was pleased. If I am ever going to go 200 in the mile and a half I think I may need 100 to 125 horsepower more. I am not sure what that would cost, but I will start filling the piggybank to save up some more $$$. By the way, my best 1 mile speed was 183.2.

The other Viper, a 2008 ACR with the rear wing removed belonged to Lou, who lives near me in Kingston Washington, who had a run of 192.0 mph in the Magnum and 179.2 in the mile.

Some of you know of other people who ran there and might want to look at the results from all classes of bikes and cars. In the attachment they also have an alphabetical listing of the 1 mile speeds.

An event like this would be awesome. I'm sick of 1/4 shit, the car can do so much more.

I agree about the 1/4 mile runs where you just start to roll. I know they have several standing mile events in Texas and other parts of the country and I think you would enjoy getting a chance to see what the car can do and how it feels at 170 - 180 mph or more. The fall Mojave Magnum is in October and if you are anywhere near you should try to go. I was able to get in 10 runs in the 2 days , so it was worth the price of admission.
