    Wrong oil filter?

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10 and I just noticed that the shop that did my last oil change put a Tec Select T3600 oil filter on it. That filter is called for a Ford 3.0. I'm wondering if putting the wrong oil filter on my truck would cause problems?

I have a SRT10 Ram too. I just use Viper filters from Dodge.

You should check out www.vtcoa.com that's the SRT10 Ram forum. Great place for info and mod ideas, etc.

That engine uses a special SRT filter they changed it from an 090 Mopar filter to an SRT filter. I was at Arrow last fall and they said not to use anything but the SRT filter.

While most oil filters are fairly generic and can fit a wide variety of vehicles, the Viper engine is one of those rare instances where you really should use the correct OEM filter. The only other filter that it ever recommended is the Mobil 1, and even that is a topic of endless debate among Viper owners.

I forget the part number but one of the times I was talking with Eddie Martin he rattled it off for me like a phone number he had memorized. Now that was for my gen III Viper but I would bet the oil filter is the same because same engine. It was a newer filter though and was the one that they were switching to.

As someone suggested, ask at the truck club or in the tech section here, those guys will know what's what when it comes to which filter.

You are smart to check it and get the right one on there though. Good catch.

Since we are on the oil change subject, I am planning on doing mine this week-end. I'm not a pro mechanic but the sunday type.
got the original dodge oil filter and pennzoil synthetic 5w30 oil.
My question: I've read different stories about the plug "gasket" that sometime is there and sometime isn't/ needs to be replace everytime, don't need to be replace everytime... Now, what's the real story about that.
My Viper is a stock 1997, Red R/T10, Canadian Edition

    Thanks

    Ben

And actually, P/N 5037836AA is called out as well, but has been superseded by the above part number. Just be sure that it's white and has the Viper marking.

05038041AA is the correct filter number for 2008 and up; but, reportedly, it won't fit the earlier engines.

Thanks, Jim. I think you're right, although the dealer's computer screen showed that AA was superseded by AB for a Gen 2. They may need to reboot their system.
