Thread: Clutch Chatter

    Clutch Chatter

Just had my clutch and flywheel replaced under warranty for slipping / burnt smell and the new clutch has bad clutch chatter when you take off from a stop in first gear. The rest of the gears no issues and shifts great. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Interesting, did not know you could get the clutch replaced under warranty? How many miles do you have on the new clutch? I remember mine did it for a few hundred miles and when away.

No it only chatters when i engage the clutch in first gear. Basically as soon as you start to release the pedal it starts to chatter.

Are you sure they replaced the flywheel? If it is a new flywheel there is a chance it will bed to the disk. Everyone thinks there is a 500 mile break-in on a clutch, that is not accurate, the real number s 1500-2000 engagements. That seems like a lot, but, it is not.

Yes new flywheel and clutch, i did a lot of city driving to increase the engagements but it only seems to get more pronounced. The mechanic did say he had a hard time reinstalling the transmission and had to disconnect the slave cylinder line which i seen the mess he made underneath the car with brake fluid. My thoughts are it could be contamination from the brake fluid or an alignment issue since he fought to get the transmission aligned and maybe forced it and damaged something.

The slave cylinder line is not attached till the trans is bolted up. He probably had trouble because the clutch disks were not aligned. Even with the factory tool you have to center the tool on all axises or it will give you trouble.

Did this eventually go away for you? I have the same chatter in the one we just got. Not sure if it is me just getting used to it or if it needs to bed in

Honestly I dont recall my stock clutch ever wanting to chatter.

But driving style can catch most any clutch in a bad spot.

My stock clutch did this after half mile with some hard launching. Eventually with some slippage it came back to life no chattering. When we pulled the clutch to put the McLeod twin disk in the disk was perfect, although the pressure plate/flywheel showed signs of hot spotting.

Are you sure they replaced the flywheel. in other words did they give you your old parts. For some reason that POS flywheel has an outrageous price attached to it.

could damaged the pilot shaft bearing upon install, dint machine the flywheel, or like jack b states it needs bedding
