Thread: Will it scrape?

    Will it scrape?

I'm wondering what rules of thumb you follow when deciding if the incline of entrances to gas station, driveways, etc. are too steep to attempt for fear of scraping the front fascia? I am THIS close to realizing my dream of owning a Viper and I am finding myself already petrified of driving the car anywhere because I don't want to be leaving blue and white scrape marks all over town. ;-)

If I think the incline is too steep, I just don't go that way. There is always another way or a different gas station.

I take inclines at an angle, and I have scraped a couple times. I have found it isn't really a big issue if you're careful.

Hey you can always have the fascia repainted.

its a car, drive it. just be careful. you will learn how to go into them on an angle to help but its gonna scrape, get used to it now....
THE IGNORE FEATURE WORKS, TRY IT...

Mine is pretty low, and I rarely scrape if I go slow and approach anything questionable at an angle. If it scrapes, it's no big deal. It's usually the lip under the actual chin spoiler. Just be wary of cement parking stops.

This. It's gonna scrape... just pay attention and plan ahead to minimize. The parking stop remark is very justified. I don't know how many times I've gotten out of the car and realized, "damn... that's closer than I thought." The view over the nose can be deceiving.

If the car is on stock suspension it will not be too bad. The secret is to take every camber at an angle.
My car has an added front splitter which puts another 12" inches on the front of the car And its on spring lowering caps!!!!

So sometimes I reverse out of a filling station the same way I went in! I also live in an area with Hills so some road junctions are a NO GO area, I now plan different routes, sometimes if I want to turn right on a cambered road from a side turning I have to turn left then turn around on a less cambered area

Is my car impractical.....Yes ........Do I care........No 7yrs now of Viper ownership and loving every second

Buy one, Drive it and you will see what I mean

The worst scrapes are the first ones. We are so nose long, it's gonna happen. Hell it happens leaving my driveway to the street. It's 3" off the ground, you won't see it unless it's on a lift. I'm not saying to abuse it, but a scrape will happen here or there. Don't let it raise your blood pressure. It will happen here or there. It's ok.

It's going to scrape no matter what. This is what I did because my nose was already extremely scraped from the previous owner and I wanted to minimize further damage. It's unobtrusive and doesn't require any permanent modifications. I took some 1" x 1/8" aluminum, bent it to match the curve of the bumper, and stuck it on with 3M double stick foam trim and emblem tape. You can just barely see them sticking out with the car on the ground. If they were painted black, you'd never see them at all.

Geesh Jack. The lip IS the chin spoiler. Even St. Leo knows that.

For $40 you can get a full set of supplies to match spray the underside. Mine came out perfect when I did that.

St. Leo's Viper knowledge is truly encyclopedic. That goes without saying.

See, I would have called that an air dam. So what is the actual chin stick-y out-y part called?

Stick-y out-y part? Look, we aren't all mechanics who understand your technical jargon. Could you please use the lay mans term?

Good idea on the scrape-y protect-y pieces. But really no one will see it but you could easily spray it to hide it a little better. It's gonna happen though. Especially on lowered cars. And once you do it once or twice, well, now it's done and you can stop worrying. You can even scrape it if you hit a dip in the the road. Like a big swooping dip sort of thing. I wouldn't let it stop you from buying one.

P.S. I used to be in bodywork and it happens on ALL exotics. Well, all that get driven anyway.

The technicocyclopediac term for the air dam is chin spoiler. It's purpose is to direct the air trying to go under the car to the sides of the car. It creates drag doing that as opposed to lift as air would that goes underneath.

    Signed, St. Leo.

No one has denied that. I chimed in when it looked like your dog knew more about the parts on your car than you did.

Do you let him drive yet? St. Leo? I bet he can pick up the trim.

What Everybody Else said & if it hasn't been lowered at all then it shouldn't be That Bad, just use Common sense! Also, if you're thinking about getting your first Viper, THIS should be the Least of your Concerns. GL

If you are the type to drive and enjoy the car... you'll get used to it. The material has plenty of give to it and it won't hurt anything other than your feelings.

Please avoid embarrassing parking block scrapes/damage by always backing your Viper into a parking space. Especially true for any convenience store you are visiting where others will take painful notice of the dreaded sound of you failing to stop in time...

Also makes for a speedy exit after you rob the joint.
