What kind of power steering fluid in my 96 GTS?

I've read the power steering threads here and on viperally, but before I end up ordering more bottles of fluid, is anyone able to tell what I might currently have?

The one on the left is straight out of a bottle of #68218064AA Power Steering +4, and the one on the right is out of my car. Does the color on the right look like the #4883077 fluid?

In my experience, as long as it's not one of the systems meant to use ATF any steering fluid will work. I'm currently using the Autozone house brand in all my cars.

TO me both those colors are the same. So it looks like you have ATF +4. Thats whats in my car right now (GEN II). From what I understand theres the power steering fluid (Power Steering 4) and the auto trans fluid (ATF+4) are the SAME fluid just priced very differently with the Power STeering 4 being more expensive.

Just had this topic come up with UK owners.

In the Gen 1 and II cars the Mopar fluid is MS5931 Part Number 04883077

On later Gen 3 / 4 Vipers its a different fluid (the red stuff ATF-4)

    They don't mix!

the power steering fluid tissue on the right looks like the correct fluid, the bright red fluid on the left looks like the later ATF-4.

I have just topped up my power steering with this stuff http://www.slick50.info/power_steering_fluid/

You need to find a fluid compatible to Part Number 04883077

You can Use the other red stuff, BUT! You must fully flush out ALL the old fluid before converting PIA if you ask me.

Dave hasn't chimed in to tell us about the pallet of Mopar PS fluid he has stashed in his root cellar?

He must be trapped under something heavy. Call for help.

I have 8 qts of the OEM stuff. So yes, I hoard fluids. But I don't retain them.

Is that the later fluid for the Gen 3 / 4 cars?

My understanding is that 1992-2002 used Mopar clear (MS-5931, Part Number 04883077) and 2003+ used ATF+4 (aka PS+4). Mopar clear has subsequently been renamed as Part Number 05142893AA...MS-10838.

By the way, Mopar p/n 05142893AA is currently available on Amazon.

There have been some concerns reported on other forums (Jeep) about swapping to red fluid. But no reports that i have found about brand name or store name clear ps fluids.

+1 on clear MS5931 approved CLEAR fluid (Valvoline white bottle blue cap is a great option). Get rid of that red ATF+4 asap!

Just left a Chrysler dealership...this "old", clear P/S fluid described above...and, shown in photo...NOW has a NEW part number:

68234631AA...though it still carries the MS-10838 designation.

^^^ If you're going to get it, be sure and do it after the price doubles Jack!

I now have plenty. I'll give away a free bottle with each cam sensor sale.
