Anyone here into RC trucks too?

I have a 1/8 Team Associated Rival Monter truck right now. It's barely been used. I was considering selling it (was 650 new) and getting an RC crawler instead. Reason is, the crawler is more like my truck and I might have more fun with that since I just like driving it around my property and crawling over obstacles. I don't race so hauling ass, which my rival truck does, is not a necessity.

It's a 1/10 instead of a 1/8. But it's made to be more of a crawler. Anyone have any experience with them? Do you like them more than a high speed 4wd racing truck? Anyone interested in buying mine (used maybe 10 time in the past 2 years)?

Or if you want to just share what you have or built, cool. I'm obviously not hardcore into the RC hobby, but it is fun and good physical therapy for my knee/amputated leg cause it keeps me walking over rough and uneven terrain which is good.

Never had a crawler. I never wanted a crawler because of how slow they are and figured I would get bored with it. But, I have a complete custom built .21 big block nitro extended chassis T-Maxx that I built years back. Approximately 25 vintage Tamiya RC kits, new built, and restored. Also have a vintage gold chassis RC-10, Kyosho Sprint car, and 2 RC helicopters. Thinking about a gas 1/5 scale car or truck next. Thought about shaving down the Tamiya collection, but haven't been able to get myself to put them up for sale.

That's where I am with the team associated. I'd rather have both. But that crawler I posted moves pretty good. It's just that since I am not racing, the truck doesn't get used as much as it should.

R/C cars/trucks are what got me into cars, and working on things in general. I built my first (Kyosho Big Brute) when I was around 12 or 13 years old, and added to the collection as I grew older (Kyosho Nitro Thrasher, Stinger MKII, and a low-end formula one type car for on-road stuff). I think I had more fun modding them than driving them, and ended up crashing most of what I had. Limited cash flow at that age kept them that way (broken)...that and moving on to paintball as a new hobby.

A few years ago I bought a brushless E-Revo, and for the most part, I've left it as-is. I actually haven't had it out in quite a while (not since my kid was born), so it might be time to dust it off and see how it's doing. I was surprised at just how fast it was with just a 4S LiPo...I can't imagine what it would do with a 6S, and I'm not sure I'm willing to find out. Wow is your 5T quick! I was just looking at the 5T. That is a cool truck. Is the gas motor somewhat quick and reliable?

I've got a handful, enough to cover all all my bases for whatever mood strikes. I've got a Slash 4x4, a Backslash conversion(1/10 Slash 4x4 converted to an 1/8 buggy) and 1/16 Turnigy Monster Beetle for general bashing, an Exceed 1/10 Mad Gear Cliff and 1/24 Losi Trail Trekker for crawling, and a 1/10 on road Exceed Drift Star low budget speed run car that I call the "Fast and Cheap." Some users on that forum were banned and posts deleted, so many of my posts seem like I'm answering a question that was never asked...

You really can't go wrong with anything Axial makes, they don't really have any "bad" products. The SCX10 is a great truck. Out of the box it's not as capable as an all out crawler would be, but it's not too far off. It's slightly more trail and scaler oriented but it's still a very capable truck. And you can build it as a very capable pure crawler if you want to do some serious climbing instead of trailing. Plus, they're popular enough that there are a ton of aftermarket parts available for them.

You are clearly well into the hobby to have seen a lot of different setups and such.

So what's your opinion on the truck I posted? It seems fast enough to have fun with. But my truck right now is super fast but I would rather crawl or trail like I do with my truck. It just seems like I would have more fun with it since I am not racing it. They call it a monster truck, and I guess it is, but a crawler that handles things like my truck is I think more what I am after.

And the axial 1/10 can still handle a jump here and there too, right?

As a crawler/trail truck, the SXC10 is tough to beat. As far as jumping with an SCX10, not so much. Out of the box with the stock 27T motor and a 2S Lipo, the SCX10 tops out at a whopping 12mph. Since it's made for trailing/crawling, it doesn't really go fast enough to catch much air. There's always a trade off with this type of truck. You can set it up to go faster, but it won't handle well at higher speeds. The suspension is too soft with too much travel for speed, and the CG is too high for cornering at speed so it will want to roll over. If you set up the suspension for higher speed, you start losing low speed/crawling ability. If you switch to a standard sensorless brushless system, you will lose all your crawling ability unless you use a sensored system. Unlike brushed systems which work at zero RPM, standard sensorless brushless systems don't work at very low RPM. Sensored brushless systems have zero/low RPM capability like a brushed system, but cost quite a bit more.

For something that deals with higher speeds a bit better without sacrificing too much crawling/trailing ability, you might consider the Rock Racer class of vehicles. Trucks like the Axial Wraith and Yeti, and the Vaterra Twin Hammers, and to some extent the Traxxas Summit. With the exception of the Yeti, they're still not "fast" trucks out of the box, but will handle speeds better than a standard crawler/trail truck. The Yeti is almost in a class of it's own. It's got the independent front end of a monster truck/short course truck, but the solid rear axle of a crawler and on 3S Lipo will do 30ish mph out of the box(but it's sensorless system won't work well at very low RPM). The Summit is basically an E-Revo with a 2 speed trans and locking diffs(and by far the biggest and most expensive truck on the list).

Best thing I can say is start watching youtube reviews and see which truck looks like it will work best for the way you want to use it.

Thanks all for your input. So since I think I will have more fun with something else, I have decided to sell my RC Team Associated Rival Truck. Also, the RC shop in Tucson offered me a great deal on the truck I want (better than I can find anywhere on the line) so I took that as a sign. I will post a link to the CL ad so you can see it. I am asking 350, but for my Viper club homies, I will do 350 shipped, with shipping up to 40 dollars. After that, buyer pays. But depending on where you are and assuming you don't want it overnighted, I bet that will get it pretty far. Obviously the ad is written for people who don't know these things inside and out the way some of you do so you may find the writing cheesy, but I am trying to get people excited about it. Plus it is a hell of a lot of truck for the price.

The stock gas motor is still somewhat quick....not like my Castle Creations Brushless conversion The gas is Very reliable for sure. I had years of fun with my gas motor before converting. Only reason I converted was to drive in my neighborhood and not piss off the neighbors with a loud two stroke engine. You can spend big money on modded 50cc engines that get you the brushless performance...but the engines alone are like over a grand.

When I used to help my beothers with their RC stuff back in like 87/88, I was 8 or 9. So I didn't do much. But things have changed a lot. I found the electric setup on my trick that I am selling to be absolutely crazy fast, super torquey. And also, nice and clean and no tweaking like we used to with gas motors.

I am pretty sold on the electric, especially for my needs and desires. Obviously some prefer the gas motors for a few reasons, and those reason are there. But for me, I have enjoyed the cleanliness and ease of electeic though.

I've got R/C trucks and planes and helicopters. I've been flying R/C's since I was 8 years old and it's a lot of fun! My wife flies as well and have some R/C cars as well. She enjoys the cars more and we usually race in the fall through spring here at a local indoor dirt track. It's fun but can get expensive to have a couple of expensive hobbies, especially when she's into it as well!
