i took some pics with an IR camera.There are two issues, one is insulation and the other is the actual release of hot air. It is the latter that gets that exact spot hot. If you want to protect the paint, insulation is not going to help, you have to redirect or channel the air away from that slight crease/opening. I will look at it this weekend and see what can be done.
You can see the hot spot (red +), that is from air flowing out of the engine compartment, I dropped a temperature line on the sill, you can see the insulation is doing its job.
