View Full Version : Show me your underhood/engine bay bling

Hey guys, twice in the last two car shows I have lost the 90's trophy to the same car. It is a 92 stang with a horse spray-painted on the side and much under-hood bling. I don't want to cheese mine up, but I am seeing (if the shows aren't fixed that is) that Judges love shine. I want to do it nicely, but show me under your hoods for some suggestions. Tastefully for sure though. Don't get me wrong I used to own a 93 mustang, but it should be consistently winning all the 90's trophies at car shows.

What year is your Viper?

An easy bling for Gen IIs is to polish the aluminum brace in front of the engine. That is a lot of shine when it is polished.

Also, IPSCO has billet aluminum airbox knobs for Gen IIs as well.

There are billet coolant tanks, billet p/s tanks, etc that will add a lot of shine under the hood, red silicone radiator hoses, and more to add color.

How much do you want to spend in order to win a $10 trophy?

I did this cuz I wanted it... if no one else likes it I don't care.... my point is do what you like and forget the crackerjack trophy that your paying for... most people have no idea what there looking at anyways

thanks for the info guys. Now I know a nice polished supercharger or intake is fancy, but not in the cards (my valve cover just had it's first huge chunk of paint come off, so something will happen to them in the future)

I have a 98 GTS. I have the (I forget the company name...starting with M) Oil cap and dip stick top, and the sneaky pete painted on the hood liner, but otherwise it is stock looking. Those are very cheap items to do, and add some shine to an otherwise black engine bay.

Or maybe I should give in that a 92 stang is nicer looking then my 98GTS. Who knows, but "judges' be crazy

I do like it, but likely won't be doing that because of what it would cost, but that does make me want to look into what others have done with their valve covers and intakes

I have a couple of Rare Saleens, ultra rare prototype stuff and even they use to lose to plain ole giggered up Mustangs. When I take the Viper by a show, it would get the most hated award because people who judge, hate Vipers. Yet last get together it was the most pictured with families and kids getting pictured with it.

Who has room for meaningless trophies? Any I won in the past with the Saleens, went in the trash. In fact when I bring any of my cars to the show, I demand I am not in the judged categories. I could careless what some self absorbed judges think about my cars. I enjoy them and car shows are so others can enjoy them too.

If you keep losing to a 92 GT, pull the cones out and autocross to the death. Ha! Ha!

MOST shows that are spectator judged will be a waste of time. MOST local shows judged by random people in the host club, will be a waste of time. Each show "judge" has a bias as to what they like. We've all seen cars "win" at a show and been like WTF!, did they not even look around??! Is the nature of the car show BS! I go, have fun, hang out, enjoy the cars and could care less what trophy, if any I get. If I wanted one that bad, I'd go and buy one.

You own a Viper, it's a rolling car show! When you stop to get gas, something to eat, etc..do you think people are rushing to the 1990 Stang the same way? Enjoy your car, don't worry about some POS "beating" you.

....and it doesn't have to cost a lot to make it look a lil nicer.... mine is chrome powder coat and was very reasonable... some black paint touch up, new wires with billet seperators,,,,,, yea there is a lot more there but the basics go a long way,,, besides you / we all have something that all the mustangs will never have... The valve covers are starting to chip now, so I assume mine is over-due soon too. Now...when you had that done what was the process to get that painted black? Cost?

My .02...and please understand that I don't know the OP's car...

I'd recommend against more "blingy stuff"..and go towards detail...detail...detail. Clean, polish, primp everything. For example, Megiuars makes a hard sanding block that's about 2000 grit. This can be used on top of the valve cover lettering to make them look great.

I know for a fact that I am going to paint the intake and valve covers that crinkle black like up top. Was thinking about polishing the 3 lines on the intake and the valve cover emblems, etc, but I am average at polishing so I thought the polished items that go on the manifold and intake from theviperstore would be best

dave6666
08-02-2015, 08:24 AM
The "polished items" from the Viper Store are like putting Asian body decals from Pep Boys on your side panels. They are cheap looking, just like most adhesive backed dress-up parts are. If you are going to paint your intake and valve covers, have the bare areas polished before they put the clear coat on. Then you will never have to polish them again.

Like that when I bought the car Dave, I know its pulling in HOT air (at the moment) Plan is to make a JMB type air box :)

I will get around to it one of these days :)

A chrome Clutch reservoir cap would be nice to match the MGW Oil filler cap Anybody make one?

Carbon dipped window cowl makes a nice upgrade when the hood is opened :)

I wouldn't let anyone but Justin at JMB powdercoat something for my Viper. Just redid my valve covers and installed the breathers. He is the only one I could find who would polish the letters. The local guys looked at me like I wanted them to sell me crack.

All that customization looks good until the car is 25 years old then you will be looking for original parts to put back on. My take on it is that new cars are a dime a dozen so to speak so to make your car get noticed it has to be different than everyone else. Customize if you want because of what you like, not because of what everyone else likes.
