As capable as the new Corvette Stingray is, and as many as Chevy has sold so far, we all knew it was only the beginning. The Stingray Convertible goes on sale later this month, but the version enthusiasts have really been looking forward to is the Z06. And soon the wait will be over.

Although Chevrolet hasn't released much in the way of details to go with the teaser shot you see above, it has confirmed that the new Corvette Z06 will be unveiled in full at the Detroit Auto Show next month. All we can really glean from the teaser image are the low-profile Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires on lightweight-looking alloys, as well as carbon-fiber side skirt and fender-flare extensions. Promised to be "the most track-capable Corvette ever," the new Z06 (not Z07 as previously speculated) was "designed to deliver supercar levels of performance through unique powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic features."

Once production gets under way late next year, it will join a growing family of performance Chevys, alongside the Camaro range, the new SS performance sedan, and of course the rest of the Corvette lineup. Scope out the press release below for the full text.

Will be interesting to see what it does. IMHO the HiPo Z's are SRTs only legitimate competition.

They picked beautiful wheels - very similar to the original GenII ACR BBS wheels - slight change in spacing

I bet it looks similar to the base like the C6 did; that's a fail IMO

C6 Z06 had much more road presence than a base C6 corvette. Factory wide body.

Disagree and ill take it a step further-also feel like the ZR1 looked too similar to the base as well

The Viper, on the other hand, simply doesn't have that problem

Well lets be honest here. The ACR is just a coupe with a wing and splitter. Same power, same interior, same everything other then the aero group. Yes some slight suspension and tweeks but, all the same really. Body panels are the same and wheel size is the same etc.

The ZO6 and esp the ZR1 if you add a wing and splitter would be no different. They though, have more HP than the base and more refinements and wheel size as well as cosmetic changes ( see thru engine bay and air ducts on the sides) that the base models don't.

So they do build a much more different car than the Viper does in that respect.

I did really like this one that I saw at last year's auto show though:

Definitely different but still pretty similar.

What's MSRP? 80k?

My guess will be $90's

They were only selling 1000 ZR1 and Z06 combined the last few years. Most Z06 were priced in the 90+ range since 2010.

The stance in the stationary picture is really good. The road photo shows something different. Could it have some sort of adjustable suspension? SRT, now is the time for the A.....C.....R teasers.

Too bad the rear of the Z06 will be the same. Was hoping to see a change. Just can't get past the way it looks, too much like a Camaro.

Agreed. I was all excited when I saw the concept in the transformers movie and then they did that crap, and had the balls to call it a stingray

That car is pure awesome. I love it. I will be curious to see performance numbers. Probably bet it gets close or bears the Gen 5.

Funny how much anticipation is going towards this ZO6.

Now............

Figure the ZR1 hype??!! Anticipation there has hinted towards a Twin Turbo model with 700+. What about cosmetic and mechanical alterations?? Now that would be scary!!

I always thought that window was so dumb - you can't see anything except a plastic shroud - what the heck was the point? Windows to the engine bay can be sweet but that was just total fail on execution even if it was a cool car overall

That full body shot of the yellow car isn't real. That is a photoshop someone created using a base coupe car. The original photoshop started as a white car.

From the actual image posted, I spy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, and we've seen the prototype in camo running around with carbon brakes already. This Z06 is also rumored to be supercharged, with the ZR1 to be twin-turbo.

SRT better have a quick response after January's unveil...

Ya know I hear this comment so much but it doesn't matter when you think about... it works.
This car looks ten times more aggressive than the previous 4 little mouse holes they kept making for years - and nobody complained about that?

It's the 1st vette in decades I'd ever consider owning.

The press release had some interesting wording that made it sound like there is no ZR1 coming out...

The debut of the Corvette Z06 will complete Chevrolet's performance-car lineup

I know a couple GM test engineers. They have been testing TVS supercharged (ala ZR1 blower) and turbo cars... I wonder if GM said "screw the blower, lets skip to turbo ASAP". If so, the Z06 would then replace the ZR1 on the ladder.

With how fast the Z06 got at the end when they started offering the Z07 package, I wonder if they came to the conclusion "What is the point" of offering the ZR1? Consolidate the performance into a single car.

I am sure there will be plenty of gnashing of the teeth if the Z06 "only" has 600 or so HP. But it will be an interesting exercise to say that more HP isn't the silver bullet it once was.

If the Z06 comes with carbon brakes and twin turbo, regardless of displacement...as long as it keep 8 cylinders....all for under 100k, there will be one in my garage parked next to the ACR.

I'd bet it will be in the $95k range, it would be cool if they had a DCT option, say $10-15k extra

DCT, Greater than 1.08 lateral G's (what the current stingray pulls), lightweight, carbon brakes, and twin turbo....this car may be untouchable on the ring or the street!

I would bet the Z06 will stay N/A for the road course, if it were to come with TT's and carbon brakes I would bet north of $130K
