DIALED-IN DOWNFORCE: Taking Viper ACR aerodynamics to the extreme

June 9, 2015

Aerodynamic downforce.

It adds stability at high speeds. It manages airflow around the car to improve cornering power and increases control. It unleashes the power of physics to add performance under extreme conditions, while enabling aggressive design aesthetics that match Viper ACR capabilities.

The new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR is capable of producing the highest aerodynamic downforce of any production car. Harnessing the hand-crafted culture of Viper personalization, even aerodynamic downforce can be dialed between two available packages:
•Dodge Viper ACR
•Dodge Viper ACR with Extreme Aero

The Viper ACR features a carbon-fiber front splitter with kick-up diffusers and detachable extension, front dive planes and a dual-element rear wing. These measures combine to produce more than 2 1/2 times the downforce of the TA 2.0 version. Front dive planes create vortices alongside the car, reducing pressure inside the front wheel wells.

The rear wing is 40 percent larger in size than the TA 2.0 iteration, while incorporating gently twisted wing stanchions to minimize drag while adding downforce.

But even downforce can be taken up a notch.

The Dodge Viper ACR with Extreme Aero takes downforce to an unprecedented level. Opting for the Extreme package adds these aerodynamic elements:
◦Larger detachable front splitter extension and additional dive planes optimized to work in unison with rear aero elements to provide balanced on-track performance
◦Removable louvers on the SRT® hood reduce front wheel well pressure, adding incremental downforce

•A carbon fiber rear diffuser extending forward of the rear axle – enhanced by six strakes contoured to maximize downforce in the corners without adding drag on the straights
•A dual-plane rear wing 100mm larger than the standard ACR Aero unit, positioned higher and further rearward and employing unique end plates and gurney lip to produce maximum downforce while minimizing straight-line drag.

The Viper ACR Extreme Aero package – available for order later this year – has been designed to satisfy the downforce demands of discriminating performance enthusiasts delivering over 3 times the downforce when compared to a TA 2.0. The Extreme Aero package is designed for those drivers that are capable of driving Viper ACR to its limit.

Both ACR Aero packages feature an interior with ACR-specific console, inside door trim, instrument panel, floor mats, high-performance seat belts, special ACR badges, high-grip Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and a choice between silver or red accent stitching.

ACR Aero or ACR Extreme Aero? Only Dodge Viper offers dialed-in downforce, at your demand and decree.

should be a sticky :)

No need for a sticky as this is posted under www.drivesrt.com in the news section. We need to all thank a young man with roots in Omaha for tackling this concern and starting work on this well over two weeks ago to meet the concerns of the many customers that have questioned this issue with us, Tomball and Roanoke. He is too modest to take credit , but all of us owe him a debt of thanks. Really appreciate his dedication when the Big Three Dealers request something from our customers and Dodge/SRT take it to heart.

Thanks!

Not sure why they needed 2 different ACR's. Anyone who wants a ACR will surely want the best one.

I think it's how much downforce do you want? Everybody is talking about more horsepower and now we're seeing the beginning of a new revolution - more downforce, not horsepower! Right now horsepower is more sexy but perhaps Dodge can change that. Unfortunately for downforce, it scrubs off top speed which is also more sexy. More top speed and horsepower aren't something the average enthusiast needs but they sell more than downforce which is actually more useful.

I agree. I wouldn't get anything but the extreme aero. The "light" version and the TA2.0 are just too close to one another.

Definitely an interesting approach to remove the hood louvers to balance the center of pressure. Hopefully some data is released on down-force adjustments (rear wing angle to hood louver, etc.). Also it would be good to see the top speeds of the extreme vs. the normal ACR. They have mentioned the extreme's wing height helps reduce drag. Lots of data we might never get to see but clearly a lot of development has gone into the aerodynamic packages for these cars.

Over the years there have been the group of buyers that want the serious track prowess of the ACR, but there have been others that love the look. Two ACRs do solve some of that problem, in that the base model will be more street friendly, will give many folks the look they desire, still be blazingly quick, and there may be a legitimate argument that on some , high speed tracks , it could be quicker - Road America comes to mind. Either way , the Extreme could be just that to some folks , but in response to the idea the TA and the ACR are too close , let's keep in mind the step up means ;

1. New suspension
2. New tires and rims
3. Carbon Ceramic rotors
4. Upgraded and ACR designed interior
5. Bigger wing
6. Supposedly less weight

This is just to name a few items , so the upgrade in cost will be justifiable to many , likely with just the suspension, brakes , rims and tires alone.

Overall , we can argue it may be like going from a GT3 to a GT3RS, but I for one welcome the chance to have such a wide variety of choices.

Bill, The GT3/GT3RS analogy is spot on and I can state from first hand experience BOTH are fantastic cars. BOTH new ACR's will be too. Best, Allan

Interesting that they say the extreme is meant for drivers that can actually ring the lap times from the car...In other words they are telling the wana a bes that the extreme is not the car for them..

To bad Chevy didn't do that with the z07

Quite the opposite...by definition that would make them want it more. Others will choose the car that best matches their performance and comfort needs.

Great that Dodge has taken the time and expense to tend to both buyers for such a low volume car. Hopefully ACR may be able to change that though. :)

Thats why Vette sales are smoking hot, great marketing and hype.
Many drivers never track their cars, OR if they do they run lap times closer to a Honda then a Viper....but hey if they can write the check or make the payment right.
