View Full Version : How far to insert the filler nozzle?

I hope I don't seem like a dolt. I've had to fill the car up twice, and both times the pump has clicked off a lot. I've had to either withdraw the nozzle or push it in a little bit. The gas flows for a few seconds and then clicks off again. I'm never quite sure when the tank is really full. Is there a trick?

Just the tip, just for a second.
You might also try flipping the nozzle upside down (seriously).

Yup, flipping the nozzle upside down helps at certain gas stations.
The hose going from the filler neck to the gas tank is maybe 1" in diameter and connects to the bottom half of the tank (not flowing gas into the top of the tank as you would expect). I can see this contributing to the click off issue.
Some gas stations seem worse than others, Chevron gives me the biggest issues with my Gen 4.

Yeah that thing reads off pressure, so it must be sensing that it is full.

1 out of 3 Chevrons gives me issues for some reason. Haven't had issues at any other pumps.

That's what she said.
It is a Chevron that I've gone to both times.
Thanks again for the help. I'll try somewhere else.

Here is how to solve this isssue if the pump keeps clicking off:
1. Insert the Nozzle into the filler hole a normal amount.
2. Using some fingers, pull the rubber pump sock back up toward you so it is not flush with the gas filler hole on the car--hold it about 1/2" to1" away.
This approach works every time for me when I encounter the issue.

I filled up at a Shell tonight and no issues. Chevron is at least part of the problem.

When I got my car I thought because it was from out of state it had some different filler nozzle. Chevrons for sure don't work I have to stand there and hold the nozzle back so it works. Really annoying.

So, you use your fingers at first to get it ready for the pump? After manipulating it with your fingers, the pump can get in the filler hole and deposit the fluid? How long does it take you? I think about baseball while I am pumping it. Sometimes though I will be done pumping and the filling the hole with high octane and my girlfriend tells me she didn't even time to go inside and grab a soda or anything. She gets mad and says I need to think about her needs and that sometimes she wants more than just a quick fill up. I told her she should take it as a compliment that I wanted to fill it so quickly so that we could get back on the road together. Women, sometimes they just don't understand cars.

I have a much harder time with this one then my 03. I usually use a couple Sunocos in my 'hood (all Sunoco here carry 93), but I have to put "just the tip" in and kind of squeeze gently to get it started, then I stick it in a bit more, but still have to go slow. The fuel nozzle, that is!

Yep, pulling the rubber back up the shaft works for me every time when I want to put the fluid in the filler hole without interruption.
There must be a depth sensor around the shaft and by pulling the rubbing back, it makes the senor think you've penetrated deeper and thus keeps the fluid flowing.

Just remember to go slow, especially if you haven't done it in a while...the last thing you want to do is pull out prematurely and spray all over the ass end of your car. Might want to have a towel handy just in case.

This is why I hate Oregon, someone else nozzeling my cars gas hole... Usually someone's there taking pics, it's just emasculating...
Geeze ... I'm thinking I have to edit this thread's title adding NWS.
Too funny. But it's actually a commonly asked question. The gasoline aspect that is.

I've definitely run into it on my Gen 4, and it sent me searching through multiple forums to see what the issue was. Thankfully, there were plenty of people that had the same issue, and offered a few solutions (I prefer the upside down nozzle approach). Just one of those weird Viper things.

I find if you are getting bored filling it up cause you have done it so many times and had the car for a while, it helps to think about other cars you had while in college. Or maybe a nice new car you see at work that looks all nice and like a luxury car but you know just needs to be driven fast and hard and that car would just love a good hard track session.

Mine has frequently said full when not full. Stops and wont take any more and I know that 13 gallons is not a full tank.
Then if I try to put more, it overflows all over the fender... what a pain in the anus

I don't know if any of the rest of you guys have this problem but occasionally, very rarely really, I just cant seem to get the hose up and into the filler neck. It just lays there on the ground, limp and useless... Surely I'm not the only one.

I hear this happens with some older hoses, shame what the ravages of time will do to such an essential tool *sigh*

California's idiotic CARB-mandated vapor capture fuel pumps do this. They've spread into other states trying to ape our terrible emissions laws and this is the root of the issue. The '15 doesn't do it anywhere near as much as the '14 did but as others have mentioned, pull the top of the accordion back to vent it and it should stop doing it.

I've always inserted my nozzle as far as it could possibly go, ever since I was old enough to do my first fill up. God that was an awkward experience. I said I was going to use just the tip, but next thing you know I was handle deep and fuel was EVERYWHERE.. I think we're back on track now?
handle deep
Handle? Now I'm confused again.

I usually go full depth. Sometimes if you wait 10 seconds before and after pumping it helps.
Don't usually have issues with the clicking off; it has a couple times.
The worst thing is I've had it overflow on 2 occasions. Once I think it may have been that particular station because myself and another customer both finished at the same time & both overflowed.

What do you do when your nozzle is just to big and won't go into the hole no matter how hard or what you try?......take a step back, replace the diesel fuel nozzle with the correct unleaded fuel nozzle and pump away!!
mblgjr
06-10-2015, 09:24 AM
There was no way I could clean that up. True story though.
I do find the filler neck a bit annoying because it's not really mounted into the body too well. I never let the nozzle hang under it's own weight. Always hold it steady the whole time.

You never go down a nozzle size...I either find a bigger hole (like the side window or something), or just leave it out and start spraying. It makes a mess, but I like the way it smells, so I don't mind.
