View Full Version : Brake lights flashing while shifting?

Hey all,
I did a quick search to see if this is possibly something you guys have seen before, but I didn't find anything.
I've had a few friends tell me when they're behind me, sometimes my brake lights flash when I shift gears. They know how I drive as we've cruised together for many years, so they notice it's a bit odd. I saw a video one of them took and it definitely looks like it happens when I shift during hard acceleration. I've never had this issue before, and nobody's ever said anything before.
I'm guessing it could be my right foot, maybe I catch the edge of the brake pedal when I get back on the gas? So I try to stay aware of where my foot is, just in case. I also have to wonder (if it's not my error) will the brake lights flash if the traction control kicks in?
Any ideas?

I've seen it on videos, so I don't think it is just you.

Do lights come on once...or flicker. If flicker, may have electrical issue.
If on briefly, suspect your foot...most likely right...depending on build, foot size, shoes, AND, type of car before this one. If it was a Gen I or II, I say right foot. This was a valid factory concern prior to shipment of Gen III Vipers. So much so, that those attending VOI.VII in Nashville in Sept 2002 AND who were awaiting delivery of their 2003 SRT-10 were encouraged to drive one at the autocross that Dodge set up there. You were assigned an instructor who asked you to hit the brakes hard enough to activate the ABS system...supposedly to test the system itself. Once stopped, said instructor then asked the driver to check the tach...MANY reported carrying a RPM of 2500 as their right foot was holding the gas pedal down along with the brake. This surprise occurred to veteran Viper drivers due to the rearrangement of the pedals necessitated by the addition of the new, and highly requested dead pedal.

That's good to know! They definitely come on, but just for a moment, so it's more than just a flicker. I'm a size 8 shoe and I wear flat running shoes. I'm coming from a Gen 2 GTS, and knowing that guys have had the same kind of issue, I think I'm correct to suspect myself as the culprit. lol

When the car decelerates slightly and the brake pedal weights forward if the switch is to close (tolerance) it can make this happen. There is no adjustment for the switch though once it is set.

My 13 did that on hard, fast shifts. The brake light switch was faulty. Fixed under warranty.

It's to give those cars behind you hope, they might actually catch up.
