Where are people getting the Pennzoil 0W40 from?

Or are you using Mobil 1?

If you buy enough of it your local autozone will start stocking it. The comps will recognize the demand and automatically order it for the store.

Pepboys has Pennzoil Ultra. Their online store has 30% discount and free ground shipping for purchases over $100.

I found the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-40 (as recommended by manufacture) on amazon prime with free shipping for $48.74 for the 6 Quart case X 2= $97.48 This breaks down to about $8.13 per QT. I ordered on line and it was on my front porch in 1.5 days. Hard to beat that type of service..

I have gotten the factory fill Pennzoil for our 2014 at a local Viper-friendly Chrysler dealer...club discount makes it cheaper there than at AutoZone.

Does Mobile 1 meet the minimum require specifications that are required for the Gen V engines? Someone told me the Pennz Ultra meet the new specifications and that was why the Vipers have that instead of Mobile 1 now.

Ive used Motul before but not in the Viper. Always treated me well in LS motors.

I, like you, feel better using a higher end, performance based, oil. With oil and maintenance, you ask 10 people, you get 10 different answers...

I went with Castrol Syntec 0w-40. Seems like all brands of the oil in that weight are labeled European Formula.

I've read pennzoil ultra is up there with amsoil and royal purple as far as best motor oil. A lot of this is backed by tests done by independent labs submitted from the users. I use amsoil myself for my current car. Hopefully by the time I get a gen V, there is someone well versed in what oil variant I can use, (daily driver, track use, garage queen, summer driven, etc).

I think that a good way to choose an oil is just try it for 50,000 miles and then tear down the engine and see how it did.

Or just choose whatever some other guy on the forum used that didn't blow up his engine in 3000 miles.

Google any oil and you are going to find engines that did not make it 3000 miles using every brand of oil made!

Mobil 1 does meet the spec. Look in your manual for the oil req and then look at the specs on M1. I wanted to use M1 anyway and could not find the Penn locally. I went the extra step and called SRT to confirm the M1 was ok to use and would not have any warranty issues. My previous 4 Vipes all used M1 with no issues and I am sticking to it.

The oil you should use depends on the how you use the car. For most folks, factory fill is really good stuff. In the new cars I like to use the Penzoil Ultra 0w40 or the 5w40 if you run hard.

On track cars with Catalyst we will run 15w50 to deal with the high oil temps, but this is not the best for cold starts or around town stuff.

On race cars with no Catalyst, we can run some really great oils with additive packages that prolong engine life and make more power, but they will kill the cats on a street car.

My 2 cents.

I could, but on the net things tend to get drawn out to much for my tastes, but I had some bearing problems with redline.
A few friends with PCA also switched from redline to others brands of oil after engine failures after oiling problems...they have exact reasons since they had their oil tested.

I don't hate redline, just care not to run it on my track cars...others may love it..lol
I hear brad penn is pretty good also.

Thank you for the feedback. I have ran it but only on hard driven street cars. I don't have allegiance to Redline, I ran it BC the shop I was using at the time recommended it. What weight M1 are you using?

12 quarts in a change?

lochnessmonster

My understanding, without referencing my manual, is that the capacity is 11qt and it sounds like guys are finding it takes about 10.5 qt. The most important thing I've read is the car needs to be absolutely level, and you need to allow a fair amount of time to drain out the old oil. Here in Canada, a jug of synthetic (4.4 litres I believe) runs about $50.00 + tax. I bought 1qt of Mobile 1 synthetic 0W-40 at Napa the other day, and it was $14.46 (12.99 + tax). So, if you do the math, this isn't going to be an inexpensive oil change. It'll be about $150.00 for the oil alone. The only saving grace was the filter, from NAPA, came in at a little over $10.00.

Edit - I just checked Amazon.ca I searched for Pennzoil and they don't have it. However, you can purchase a 6 pack of Mobil 1 0W-40 for 62.36 + shipping, which is a huge savings over the single quart I bought at NAPA, but might not be such a great savings if you buy one of the big jugs when you factor in the shipping.

I used Brads Penn in my old cars.
There is zinc Brads oil so I'd be cautious in putting it in a new car.

Jesus...you can get the same Mobil 1 0w40 at Wal-Mart down here for $26-$27 for a 5 qt. jug. Two of those plus a single quart will cover the oil change in a Gen 4/5 Viper. $150 for the oil alone is insane.

I know, that's why I posted it, because I have lived in the U.S. and Canada (U.S. Citizen), and I am pretty familiar with the prices on various items, so I thought it might make you guys feel better when you go to buy oil: it could be worse. Don't even get me started on tires. For some unknown reason, in Canada, car tires must be lined with gold, because they are priced accordingly. I always ship mine in from the U.S. Right now fuel for my car, 91 octane, is $4.35 gal. (1.15L x 3.78L) I'm sure you are getting fuel a lot cheaper too. So, the moral of the story is, next time you fill up, or change your oil etc., or change your tires, or pretty much do anything with your car, be grateful you aren't paying what we are paying in Canada :)

What's wrong with Mopar's synthetic?

Nothing in particular; however, the SRT engineers have never recommended the "house" brand oil to my knowledge; so, most people have not had a reason to use it. The additive package is unknown, and one would guess the oil isn't formulated specifically for high horsepower engines since that is such a small percentage of cars serviced at dealers. I would think that one would want "the best" for the Viper to give best protection for that expensive engine in the high heat and high RPM operation that many Vipers experience.

Steve - Indy states the simplest way to get 0-40W Pennzoil Ultra - your local Dealer. The interesting note about the Shell/Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is that it is formulated from Natural Gas. They did not have a 0-40W , but did this formulation for the Viper.

Well it is recommended in the manual by SRT.

Interesting! What is the part # recommended in the manual? Perhaps it is a unique number and is a repackaged version of Penzoil Ultra 0W-40 SRT oil. I wouldn't have thought that they would do that, given their relationship with Pennzoil.
