I did a bit of research. It appears the owner-guy died in 2004 and his widow never sold it, and she passed away in 2012, so now the LA County probate court is dispositioning it. It does make me think about what is going to happen to my project cars when I kick off. Just a hassle for someone to get rid of.

One forum member says to expect it to go for over a half million; depending on the airworthiness of the metal structure.

I just did a search and found that the P51 and extra parts sold for $851,000 ! Unfortunately (my opinion) plans appear to be that it is going to be severely modified to be a racer.

Well that is unfortunate! I never understood why some people do that to a plane, car or boat. I mean pick one to start with that is almost FUBAR to start with for cheaper, if all you are going to do is modify it beyond recognition.

I used to have one go over the house here fairly often. Based out of an airpark a mile away. Hearing it go by a few hundred yards up was way cool when he was in the pattern to buzz the field.

I don't know a ton about planes or their history necessarily, especially compared to some of the bigtime aviation enthousiasts here, but I do know the importance of THIS plane and aside from that, I have always found it really cool looking. How awesome it would be to be able to pick something like this up.

These days, aren't there companies making reproductions like factory five does for Cobra's? Allowing people to get the look and feel but with newer guts and a more affordable price?

There is one in Ft.Myers, FL right now - together with some bombers. I think you can be a co-pilot in the P51 for 2500-3000$ an hour!

I asked once earlier, does anyone know why the Viper motor hasn't been tried in aviation? It makes a ton of NA power and is fairly flat. Is it an oil starvation issue? It seems like a good choice as piston engines go. At least to me, someone who has zero flying experience. Just wondering if it's been tried/used because it has had great success as a marine engine.
