View Full Version : 2014 T/A - check engine light help

I went to cruise weekend in Ocean City, MD with my 2014 Viper T/A this past weekend
and everything was going great until I was ready to head home last night.
Stopped and got something to eat and was leaving the parking lot creeping down the exit to the roadway so I don't scrape
and bam I see Electronic Throttle control light popped up on the dash and then an immediate check engine light followed by some severe stuttering.
The car was turned off and back on and seems to run fine but still have the check engine light. Mods on the car are ARH catted headers and Arrow PCM.
Anybody have any clues as to why? Is it a common issue?

Use a scan tool to find the actual code number. The oem display only shows emission related codes

That sounds fun...as stated, you need to check the codes. You can also check for anything out of the ordinary, like melted O2 sensor wires (this is a known/common issue with headers).

well guess its off to the dealer for an evalutation.

Could it be the notorious burnt O2 sensor wire?

You should be fine to drive it home to the shop or dealer..just remember to check the basics also like oil level and make sure stupid things like coolant temp are ok.
As long as it check lamp doesn't blink which would indicate a cat converter damaging problem like a severe misfire you can limp it back.
With a tune and headers you could have a number of causes of the lamp besides anything related to a factory issues.

This is what I am thinking as well.

He stated that it went into limp mode (that's the severe stuttering part) - if it is doing that, he will not be able to drive it anywhere.
I thought you could bring up code information on the dash with the Gen 5? No?

^^^^ Iam going to go and see if the car will tell me the code. I thought I saw something in one of the menus on the dash about diagnostics.
It was stuttering for a second then I shut it off turned it back on and back to normal except for the CEL. I drove the car the car home 120miles and it ran fine.

Go to a Pep Boys (most are open on Sunday) they will plug in their code reader and tell you what codes.

Just got the code and it is P2104 (throttle actuator control system) but when I went to start the car the CEL light is not on but the code is stored.
Any idea what this is.

I believe environmental only, I set a maf code, that set a cel and that was all that showed onthe dash. When I put the scan tool on it showed 3 codes, plus, a history of another 5 codes that were never displayed
Pretty sure if the cel is not air, fuel or exhaust related, it will not display. If the cel executes a limp, that may be an exception.

Throttle control system....throttle body?, tune? Or related components like tps or maybe pedal position sensors etc etc
Since the lamp went off normally that means it's not a consistent fault or problem, however you should still have fixed or looked into.

I guess ill have to call the tech in the morning to get a definitive answer on what it is.

Did they do the throttle relearn correctly when you installed the Arrow PCM?

From what I can tell and from what the tech told me yes it was done correctly.

P2104 gets thrown when the car goes into limp mode for throttle related stuff - for instance, when we tried to mess with the tables responsible for throttle response on the Gen 4/5 PCMs with HPTuners. There will almost always be other codes that get thrown along with it, so you'll need to figure out what those other codes are - that will point you in the right direction as to the cause.

I checked the code again with the scanner I have and it says "forced idle".
Still waiting for the tech to call me back.
