I want to get a scan tool for my gen V. I want it for just in case it throws a code at the track or on the street. Any thought on what one to get.
I think people will say a budget one is good enough for that. I got an Actron and it does more than I need but figured I could use for other people if ever needed, it cleared my codes from my initial header install (which never came back) and logs nicely.

On the low end, you can get one at Harbor Freight they is CAN bus enabled for around $60.00...it reads OBD II codes and you can clear them if you need to di so. I carry one in all of our Vipers and daily drivers.
On the high end, you can get a wiTECH system to use with a laptop. This does it ALL.

I doubt you're going to shell out the 15 grand or whatever it costs for the Starscan equipment. So just get one of these.

Just for the record, wiTECH is far more advanced than StarSCAN. The cost of the wiTECH was in the $3,000.00 range...and, an aftermarket subscription/support runs about $300.00 per year.
Agree that wiTECH is not a casual purchase !!

Don't forget that HPTuners also has a very powerful scanner that you can buy separately (as in, you don't have to buy the tuning software too). You can scan and clear codes all day long, check emissions readiness status, and log data off the OBD-II port (although I think they still need to add some definitions to the Gen 5 PID list).

There are some really cool apps out there that allow you to plug a Bluetooth transmitter into the OBD port and read everything on your mobile device (I use the Torque app on a Droid Turbo). It's incredibly cool to be able to see real-time graphical sensor data from the smartphone when you're troubleshooting things. Also, when you encounter a code, the app gives you the option to get additional information via various internet sources. Finally, the app makes your device a GPS lap timer with data logs.

I tried every way possible, if you are not a srt dealer, you cannot make the witech a full functioning tool for the G5.
I could be wrong, but, I believe when it is connected to the car, it is connected to srt via the web.
I would hope a Viper tech sees this thread and comments

Jack...I use mine at home in the stand alone mode...and, I can read all that I personally need to read. And, yes, I can do some reprogramming...such as for a Mopar "off road" PCM (Gen IV) or ECT relearn...all off line.
If one wants to do more, there is an a- la-carte method. But, in my case, I take it to a real tech for real issues.
By the way, I usually use my DRB III for certain things such as ABS cycling, programming tire pressure sensors, and the like on our Gen III & IV's. I have not tried the DRB III "emulator" mode that showed up on one of my wiTECH updates a couple of years ago.
Also, I have no experience with the wiTECH II that some techs mentioned to me...yet !

1 are you reading the enhanced pids on a G5.

Steve:
I think the G5 versus the witech is a little diff. This is old news and I posted this before, but, right before the G5 came out Chrysler changed the previous process of updates and pcm access. There are dozens of horror stories on the web about dealers that owned the witech and somewhere in 2012 Chrysler stopped supporting all past witech's, or I should say they supported them with a new large monetary adder. The posts do not give enough detail to understand what happened, but, for sure there were a lot of pissed off Chrysler dealers or independent shops.
I am fairly happy, I have an Actron, "Torque" blue tooth and a Dashdaq. I have not tried the viper hPT scanner yet, but, do know that the enhanced pidss are not supported. They just released a new beta that could have some of the enhanced pids. The knock retard pid and the "relern function would make HPT a much nicer package. I have HPT for a GM car and it will display/log all the enhanced pids, it is an excellent platform.
