View Full Version : Group Buy: DSE-VP-HS-001 – Gen IV and V Airbox Intake Heat Shield

SSGNRDZ_28
04-16-2015, 08:46 AM
There has been quite a bit of interest in the Gen IV / V intake heat shield. The design is finalized and I’m ready to begin production and would like to kick things off with a group buy. This will serve to lower the price for everyone and also help fund the production.

In addition to the lower price for group purchase, if you elect to pay early there will be an additional discount (see below).

Estimated Timeline (subject to delays beyond my control):

Deadline to commit to group purchase: April 21 (please email, PM or respond to the thread below)
Production Begins (based on commitment quantity): April 22
Deadline to prepay for additional discounted price: May 22
Estimated ship dates beginning with prepaid orders: June 5-12

Pricing and Shipping Costs:
Standard Pricing: $425
Group Purchase Pricing: $375
Prepay Group Purchase Pricing: $350

Shipping costs (USPS Priority Mail): $35
Shipping costs (USPS Standard Post): $15
Shipping costs (Canada): $50

The website is ready for prepay orders; there are 3 links setup depending on your shipping preference.

Original thread:

The shield is aluminum construction with a high quality black ceramic coating and weighs less than 4 lbs. Custom black anodized aluminum thumb screws will be included for the attachment of the shield / airbox along with stainless steel hardware for connecting the two shields.

No the Gen IV catch can bracket does not work because it mounts to the crossmember and the Gen IV is rectangular while the Gen V is round. Could definitely look into this but need a Gen V owner's help.

Edit - you have to click on the image for PayPal, not the text. I've seen the image not show up but the link still works if you click on the box. Anyway I'll look into it tomorrow. Not sure if this helps or not.

As a last minute addition I'll be including some custom hard anodized aluminum thumb screws with the shield to help keep it secure and prevent additional wear and tear on the OEM plastic screws. The production process includes approval of the first article. He doesn't know this yet but my plan was to send the first article to FrgMstr for test fit with the closeout panel before sending to FLATOUT for the Gen V test fit. The goal is absolutely to have it fit with the arrow closeout panel.

As this mod applies to Gen V owners and the thread was only posted on the Gen V forum yesterday, (I only go on Gen V forum), this seems to be very short notice to be aware of the new product and react to preorder. I'm sure if you give more time to preorder, many more would be interested to join in

A quick update. The first production unit was in my hands today for about an hour. Did a test fit on my car and took some notes for minor changes and sent it down to Texas for test fit with the Arrow closeout panel and then to test fit the GenV. Production will be full throttle once we have a confirmation of fit.

Also have the thumb screws done and they are being anodized. Progress is being made and trying to get these things in your hands ASAP.

Just an update for everyone. Final inspection found a few less than perfect finishes on some of the shields. Although minor, I opted to have these sandblasted and coated again rather than send out an inferior product. If you paid after 4/21, your shield will go out next week (if you paid on or before 4/21 it has already been shipped). Apologies for the delay. Also FYI every shield has and will be shipped via Priority mail to try to make up for some of these delays.

Installed mine today. Great quality. I put double stick foam on the front and back of mine to help with the shield rubbing on the radiator fan shroud and metal cross brace in the back. Some thin plastic washers for the DSE bolts wouldn't be a bad idea too IMO.

Good ideas for extra protection for the car and shield. FYI the DSE bolts are radiused on the back edge to prevent (or reduce the chance) of them marring the plastic of the airbox.

I just got mine installed on my '14 and will be taking it for a drive soon. A couple quick observations from the install:

- It was a snug fit getting the tabs to slide in around the radiator. Nothing terrible but if others are struggling there just a little know that you're not alone.
- The two DSE labeled screws are not long enough, I had to reuse the plastic hand turn screws. I suspect the Gen IV has shorter screws, in the pics of others it looks like the Gen V has a small spacer that raises our intake up 1/2-3/4". This wasn't an issue, the plastic screws still work, I just couldn't use the cool DSE ones.
- Finish of the piece is very good. It looks completely in place when installed, non Viper guys won't even think it wasn't stock.

SSGNRDZ_28

Interesting. The screws are quite a bit too long for the Gen IV. Any photos of this? How long are the OEM screws? What about flipping the OEM clip nuts upside down to reduce the thread length required?

Can you elaborate on the tight fit around the radiator?

Thanks
Doug

I think flipping the clip nuts over would interfere with the spacer. I'll PM you my phone number, I took a pic of how the intake is raised by the spacer. And I measured the length of the screws, the Gen V plastic screw is exactly 1/2" longer.

The tight fit wasn't due to any sheet metal issues, it was that the clip nut fits right down into the hole in the tab and getting that lined up with the top tabs that go over the radiator took some pushing.

I think I remember moving my clips on the prototype.

It seems that the easiest solution to the Gen V thumb screws is probably to get longer ones made. For those who have a Gen V, let me know your level of interest for the anodized "DSE" thumb screws and I'll look into making a longer version for exchange. In the meantime the OEM screws can still be used to secure the shield. Apologies to Gen V owners for this oversight!

It doesn't bother me at all using the original plastic ones. They don't interfere with air flow and you can't see them with the hood open unless you're leaning WAY over the engine. Gen IVs they're visible because your hood opens the wrong way (hehe) so I get why they're good there. But for us Gen V guys I say don't worry about it.

I would certainly be interested. Although I wasn't originally expecting this final touch, I think it is a really cool detail to the piece. The OEM will work 100%, but I'd be very interested in the logo DSE thumb screws to complete the install and finish off the look.

What about the screws from the prototype? Why move away from those?

The Gen V screws are 0.5" longer than the Gen IV. Even those you had wouldn't have been long enough. The screws included with the shield work fine with the Gen IV but are 1" instead of 1.5".

I moved away because I wanted to offer a lighter weight screw in black so they wouldn't stand out too much against the black of the airbox.

Everyone make sure you have your rubber drain / valve piece installed on the bottom of your airbox. Just did some testing and it was 4 degrees hotter running and 10 degrees hotter at heat soak without that plug.

Great information, I would NOT have called that.

Here is the drain tube being discussed. I wonder if this is something they eliminated for 2014+? It seems like at least a few people did not have one installed. It can be found online for less than $10.

Here are some test results from this weekend:

Ambient temp 66 degrees F

With shield
~1 mile at ~3k rpm 2nd gear, ~45MPH 80 degrees F or 14 degrees F over
2 minute idle soak at 109 or 43 over

With Shield, No Drain Plug
~1 mile at ~3k rpm 2nd gear, ~45MPH 84 degrees F or 18 degrees F over
2 minute idle soak at 118 degrees F or 52 degrees F over

No Shield
~1 mile at ~3k rpm 2nd gear, ~45MPH 87 degrees F or 21 degrees F over
2 minute idle soak at 124 degrees F or 58 degrees F over

2008 Coupe. Removed the hood grilles. These were back to back runs on the same road, wind direction, speed, etc.

Throttle and speed play a big part in the IAT. For example, if I went from just cruising at 3k RPM ~15% throttle to a bit more the IAT was only 9 over ambient. I did notice slightly different temps depending on direction due to wind.

Notes:

- The drain plug matters for cooler IAT.

- In this test scenario no timing is being pulled with the shield installed but timing is being pulled without the shield while running.

- When the radiator fans kick on IAT will skyrocket with or without the shield, but the shield keeps temps at a lower level.

- When idling without moving hot air is pulled from in front of the radiator on a 2008 hood. Air will rise from the radiators, into the holes of the hood which feed the intake. You can feel hot air being fed instead of pulling all of the cool air from the outside as might be expected. (an Arrow closeout panel or similar would eliminate this negative side effect at idle, but I suspect this duct work probably has a big “ram” effect of cool air while driving). This needs further investigation!

Thanks
Doug

This is always something I wondered. The hood has those holes on each side that feed from in front of the radiator. At speed air should be drawn in from behind the bumper, in front of the radiator, up through the hood and in to the intake. Blocking that off limits the air to be taken through the scoop and through those holes that are now blocked off.

My thought has been a block off that dips down and still draws air from behind the upper opening in the bumper.

Yeah, I started looking into closeout panel design before this test and had some questions about the hood duct work. Obviously a closeout panel with active shutters or some sort of scoop as you suggest is needed to benefit both pressure into the intake and cooler engine temps, otherwise it looks to be a compromise.

When you look up the P/N online it only goes to 2013... Wondering if they decided to not put them on after that for whatever reason.

I never really drive in the rain. Can't I just plug it up? Wouldn't that be best to keep the heat out?

Sure, that would work for temp. I woild be somewhat nervous and would want it to be removable. Washing could get some water in there too. Or a sudden pop-up storm.

I was able to install the 1/8" Dynaliner yesterday. Although there are many adhesive back insulation products out there I chose Dynaliner for a few reasons:

- closed cell (no water absorption)
- designed for automotive environment (resists oil, chemicals, durable)
- 1/8" thickness (allows installation on most surfaces of the shield without interfering with fit)
- dark gray color (blends in nicely with the shield color)
- claims to have the highest heat blocking properties of any single layer synthetic foam

Installation was simple, and all in it took about an hour to cut everything out, test fit, adhere, and install on the car. I simply laid the shield over the foam and did some tracing to get a rough shape, and refined the shape before adhering.

I ended up doing the entire inside of the main shield, entire bottom of the main shield and bottom of the tube shield. I wanted to keep the black appearance on the most visible surfaces. In hind sight I should have installed the foam on the inside of the tube shield but did not do so at the time. I used almost the entire 32" x 54" sheet (purchased on eBay for $43).

The test results were encouraging, however, I didn't have time do remove the shield and do a back-to-back:

Ambient Temp: 81 degrees F
DSE Heat Shield with Dynaliner foam installed
3k RPM constant runs: IAT = ~91 degrees F or 10 degrees over ambient
3 minute heat soak: IAT = ~107F or 26 degrees over ambient

Compared to my previous run (66 ambient) this improved the delta running IAT by 4 degrees and soak IAT by 17 degrees

Not bad for $43 and an hour of time. The results could possibly be improved by adding a second layer along the outside bottom of the shield, along the outside of the sides, and along the inside of the tube shield. Note, the first run was even better (6 and 23 degrees over ambient) but I think things got thoroughly heat soaked after the first cycle of running / soaking. Also, the fans were definitely on when idling but the temps weren't climbing at a rate previously seen.

This also has the added bonus of cushioning the contact points between the shield and the car.

I wanted to tabulate the readings I've been able to take so far. All of these attempt to be as scientific as possible, even down to the same stretch of road for running and same parking spot / direction for idling. There are a lot of moving targets when measuring IAT!

I'm just about done with the install of the heat shield which really is a quality piece. The only area I ran into fitment issue was the passenger side mounting hole on top of the radiator needed to be lengthen a little. One minute w/ a round file did the trick. However with the supplied thumb screws, I am not able to tighten them as much as I'd want and the front of the air box is not being held down 100% as a result. I tried using pliers to turn the thumb screws but my pliers are either too large to fit in there or too small to grab the thumb screws. Does anyone have issue tightening the thumb screws?

Bruce,

Yes I can send new thumb screws. I found some of them for the Gen V had been machined out of tolerance. Unfortunately I only found this out a few days ago after I shipped all of them out.

Thanks

This is right amount on the money with what I've been seeing between 6 and 10 degrees over ambient while moving down the road. Using shield, dynaliner and provided drainplug with tip cut for draining. I do drive in the rain some of the time, well more slide above the above the rain with teh wide corsas on it.

This is also with full ARH headers, cat deleted, Corsa cat backs, Viper Exchange/Arrow Heads and Cam on the car too, so very impressive heat reduction.
