Congrats on the new pup. My Dad and his wife are Dobe people. Are in the middle of BFE Vermont and have VERY serious Czech line male. He's only a pet to them lol.

Dogs are better then any alarm period! Previously I was a K9 handler and instructor. I imported dogs for agencies across the US, mostly Belgian Malinois. I trained in Europe heavily with a few differnt military organizations, mostly anti-terrorism K9 stuff. Needless to say I trust a good dog more then most!

Best of luck with the puppy. They are great fun but as soon as they eat things, I can't wait for them to grow up! Our current "puppy" just turned a year and is a force of nature. Walls, siding on the house, kids playscape..destruction abound! He's a direct Russian import bred "Volkadov" otherwise called a Central Asian Shepherd. At a year old he's 31 inches at the shoulder and about 130 pounds. His dad is about 180 or so...yea, please..ADT...beat that lol!

Enjoy puppy hood! !!!

It's a lot easier for someone that works all the time like myself (80+). They keep themselves entertained during the day, whenever I have company over they don't go crazy. My friend has a young pitbull and he has so much energy, he's just all over the place when someone goes over. I talked him into getting another one and since then he is very calm.

If they ever run away or something, find one and the other is not far away haha

Yeah I usually find that if they have a buddy, they're A LOT calmer than just by themselves, for that exact reason. They keep each other company and play and do dog stuff :p

Yeahhhh...our Siberian has never quite warmed up to the dog. Probably doesn't help that Isis likes to lodge her nose directly up the cat's butt. The cat has all of her claws, so we just let them work it out naturally.

What's really surprised us is the couple of times that Isis was scared as a puppy when another dog was in the house - the cat got all puffed up and inserted herself right in the middle of everything. I guess they might like each other more than we think.

Their intelligence is what drew us to the breed. I originally wanted an intimidating looking dog to watch out for my wife when I was out of town, but I have a low tolerance for stupid. Dobermans are definitely near the top for intelligence...ours was easy to train once we learned how to be consistent and provided adequate motivation (she's a crack head for cheese).

Yeah they are smart. I've never owned a full blooded one with a champion blood line. Only time will tell but I don't think I would own another breed after this and I have had numerous dogs. Usually the first week with a new pup is a freaken nightmare..

I remember having to post Isis' ears for the better part of 2 months...the longer the crop, the longer you have to post them to get them to stand.

Just a question but, why crop the ears?

For us, it wasn't an option - the breeder had it done for all of her litters before you could even pick them up.

There are a couple reasons for doing it...the main reason is for looks/intimidation factor. I've also read that it can help them locate sounds better, but who knows how/if that was even tested.

I don't particularly care either way, but I do like our dog's ears cropped. We bought her specifically so that when I'm out of town, my wife is never home alone. Looks/intimidation factor were pretty high on our priority list because of that. IMO, Dobermans don't look right with their floppy hound dog ears. That's my opinion, nothing more. I've never really been confronted about it in public, but I'm sure there are plenty who look at her and consider us cruel owners. Personally, IDGAF what they think. She's been a fantastic dog, and is great with my kid, cropped ears and all. I must say that I do enjoy watching people's reactions when I open the door to my house and she's standing right there next to me.

For Boxers, I actually prefer not cropped...it really depends on the breed. Dobermans just look really goofy with floppy ears and long tails.

Jealous...ours hates the water, and swims upright. Well, swimming might be a bit of an exaggeration...it's more like thrashing. The first time she saw a pool, she jumped right in the middle of it...she immediately regretted that decision. Swimming is a great way to get their energy out for sure.

Jealous...ours hates the water, and swims upright. .LOL, Mine fell in trying to catch a frog and the same thing happened. She barely moved her front feet and sank to the bottom. So we just kept getting her in the water and held her belly and showed her how to float vertically. She didn't like it at first but now that she is over her fear and knows how to swim she just keeps jumping in. Problem now is she likes to stalk the kids in the water like a shark and nips them lol

Our Red Dobie enjoyed the water, but "swam" the same way for her first two years. Vertical body position with her front legs madly slapping at the water. It was funny to watch but you had to stay at least ten feet back or you'd get soaked. She later figured it out, but once in a while she'd revert to her old ways. She died 5 years ago at 13 and we still miss her.

New kid on the block now!

Meet Jasmine, she's a rescue 5yr old Mastiff X Breed, she needs to loose a few pounds, she is around 10 stone at the moment!

She is much more assertive than Dodge and Dodge is reacting to her aggression (pack culture),

We are currently fostering her and we are only 2 days in! She's a Handful! I have got to be careful with this one!
