View Full Version : Trailering a Gen 5 question

Trading mine off for another Gen 5 and will be hauling it 500 miles ,then driving home with another.

I was going to rent an enclosed trailer one but they are all being used for bike week. So it looks like a open one is what I will be using.

Has anyone experienced problems with loading due to the fact the vehicle sits low ?

The one I am getting has the front carbon fiber corner splitters.

I have an extremely low (large beaver tail) open trailer and It took quite a while to set up the trailer to accept my G5. Perhaps it is worst than most since the car is lowered 1". In contrast, my G2 easily made it on the trailer. The worst interference point is the rocker (18" behind the front wheel) and the top of the beaver tail. You will definitely need some 4'-2X6 boards

I used uhaul open trailers for vipers a couple times. There are two versions, make sure and reserve the wider one. The front tire blocks meed to be taken off, and slide them back in front of the car tires once it's loaded (I hope that makes sense). It's just two bolts on each side. If you leave them on, the front end won't clear. Other than that, just get some type of ramp extenders and everything else is pretty straight forward.

I've seem some people use bubble wrap and plastic wrap to protect the exterior of that's a concern.

In my experience, in stock form, the G5 has a bit more clearance than any other generation Viper, so that helps. However, as Jack says above, take 4 or so 2x6 boards at least 4' long and maybe some smaller pieces of 2x4s for some additional support under the 2x6's if needed.

Invest in a pair of race ramps! The work great.

The peak of the beaver tail will be the biggest issue - boards

With the trailer attached to the truck, lower your jack and lift the front of your trailer and rear of the truck up, It will take some of the angle off of the top of the ramps but you will probably still need some 2x6"s to help get enough front end clearance at the bottom.I had a low slung trailer that you could back up to a curb and drive on with no ramps. Loved that trailer but sold it for an enclosed

Will bubble wrap flapping around in the wind mark the paint ? I would probably use some on the nose. I am going to get some rear mud flaps for the truck too.

I would use painter's tape on the front if you are worried about dings and dirt. Also mask the mirrors. You don't say where you will be renting the trailer or what type it is. As stated the Uhaul open trailers are narrow, the Viper not so much. I have an Aluma 20ft tilt bed which clears my 09 ACR's front splitter including track extension. It will clear my Gen 5 no problem. The 09 ACR is a bit lower and has the large ACR splitter.

I would be cautious securing the car using straps through the wheel. There have been some Vipers that have cracked knuckles and some suspect it was due to stress caused by securing via the wheels or suspension components. The cause was never really determined I don't believe but for safety try to secure to the frame somewhere.

I would not do anything that could flap in the wind at all. You could do blue painters tape like seen at HPDE events, or, I have seen a guy use 2 or 3 layers of clear self sticking shelf paper from Home Depot. (Not real sticky stuff)

This is a great trick that works well. Sometimes it helps if you have a large block of wood (4x4 or 6x6) to put under the jack to get some more height with out maxing out the jack.

[3M blue masking tape. They also have a masking tape for fresh paint

Where is the best place to attach straps on the viper when securing to the trailer ?

Jack B

There are slots built into the frame. I believe the mating part on the strap are called T-Hooks. The problem you will have is, rental trailers are probably not going to have the convenient places to fasten the straps on the trailer side.

Many rental trailers like U Haul use tire bonnet straps, and the rear can use regular type straps...some people can get sloppy with the loop straps that go on the end of the car straps, and you have to use some common sense what you put this loop onto, axles and body connectors won't support the strong ratcheting of the strap yet alone the torque and pulling strength as the trailer goes down the road, fast stops, bumps etc....my $.02

Sorry to dig up an old thread but figured it was pertinent for my questions. I'm on the fence whether to buy an inexpensive trailer or rent a u-haul. I've read through every thread I can find on the subject but still uncertain if what I'm considering will work so I'll just ask.

Are either of these trailers suitable to haul a Gen V? The top one looks easier to load the car...

http://www.happytrailersales.net/2015-pj-83-x-20-car-hauler-w-powdercoated-paint-c5--1ru|nm.html

Are these tie downs the correct type to attach to the viper? If so, will they work fine with the u-haul trailer if I decide to go that route?

Not sure what your intention are but those tie downs will work on the U-haul trailer. As stated above Ninjakris is on point on the use of the U-haul trailer. If you like you can PM me.

Everyone is too busy drooling over the ACR threads right now. Your question will be answered by the next available representative. Lol.

I would definitely go with a tiltbed trailer for ease of use. Also, as far as tie downs go, I went with Mac's Tie Downs, specifically the axle straps. I spent countless hours researching the best possible ways of strapping down the Viper. You will get 10 different opinions from people with many many years of trailering experience. Also, they are extremely helpful at Mac's should you have any questions about this topic.

Remember to bring along at least four, 4ft, 2x4 or 2x6's.

I recently saw a Ferrari 458 brought to the track on a U Haul. It looked really funny to have such an expensive car on a U Haul; but, guessing that it was a one time thing or no room to store a trailer. But it worked OK.

If you plan to use the trailer much; I really think that you should go check out a Sloan Kwik Load since they are made in your general area. Yes, it does cost more than those inexpensive trailers; but, the convenience of loading and unloading is worth it. Plus it matches your car in terms of being the best design for the application.

Unless I missed it, how often are you going to be using a trailer? Once a year? 10 times a year? Do you have somewhere to store a trailer if you buy one. Is owning your own trailer worth the hassle of maintenance? A Uhaul trailer works fine and is a proven method. No need for any special tie down. Just get something to extend the ramps. As for buying your own trailer, I'm no expert, but both look like they would do the job fine.

Let me offer a different opinion. I now have a trailer, but, prior to owning a trailer I rented a U-haul twice and both times were disasters. In case one it took five hours to load the car and I scrapped the car severely.

There are reasons some trailers are low, have beaver tails and custom fenders that allow the door to open. That is not a description of a Uhaul.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! To answer some questions, I'm just getting into tracking the car but see myself doing 4 or so events a year. That would put me over 1k per year for rentals. The trailers I'm looking at are under $2500 so it will be cost effective in under 3 years as long as trailers in this price range are adequate for my needs. I originally did not have a place to store one but have now secured storage so I'm good there.

Those Sloan Kwik Load trailers look great and they are literally down the road from me! I'll go check em out but not sure I can justify spending quite that much after just purchasing a new set of Sidewinder IIs with Hoosiers...

Thanks outnumbered; Raceramps ordered!

As for the tie downs, I'll probably just go with the ones from Amazon. Just wanted to make sure the J connectors were the correct type before purchasing them.

I will update the thread once I make a decision on the trailer; thanks again to everyone for the advice!

T connectors are the correct hardware end. Per a previous post go to the MAC site.

Thanks Jack. I just found the proper tie downs on the MAC site. Gonna wait to order until I talk to them though; have to make sure they'll be here in time for my June track date.

Also, just went ahead and bit the bullet. Ordered a set of race ramps. :D

Thanks again to everyone who offered advice on trailers. I ended up getting an 18' flatbed with an aluminum rock shield. It worked pretty well but I took it back after the event to have it modified to make it a little easier to get the car up.

Aluma 8220 Tilt is in my opinion the best trailer for hauling a Viper. I will be using one and have several friends that use them. Outfit them with pitpal ramps for the lowered cars and it's a very easy to use trailer. Driver's side fender is removable so opening your door is never an issue. If it's a steel trailer your after the Maxey Drop N Load trailer is great and a really cool application as it's on airbags. As others have said the race ramps are a great application for standard issue steel trailers. Just remember when trailer shopping not all trailers are built the same and the cheapest is the cheapest for a reason.

If possible, stay with aluminum. It gives you a minimum of 1000 lb of extra capacity.

Yup. That's what I use. I just installed an electric winch too, just in case.
