View Full Version : Exhaust/cat advice on silver GTS

I'm planning my spring mods for a '98 bone stock silver GTS and want to make sure I get the correct exhaust on the first try. I'm not necessarily interested in what brand is better from a sound/drone standpoint, but more, how do I upgrade the exhaust to prevent discoloration on the side sills. The car has minimal discoloration with 5200 miles. I would like to get by with just an exhaust, but have read high-flow cats are necessary to prevent discoloration. Can anyone with a silver car chime in?

At a minimum I would go with high flow cats. My car has had them since approx 6k miles and it now has 13k or so and there is no yellowing. I also have ceramic coated headers and a Corsa catback system. The previous owner did rap the whole exhaust with heat shielding, but most would argue it's not the best since it'll trap moisture.

even hi flows will yellow a silver car. dont ask me how i know. catless is the ONLY way on a silver car to really solve that issue. or get used to the $350 price tag to repaint them

if catless is too loud for you, install another bullet muffler in the sills to quiet it down

EXACTLY! SHF Metal Matrix cats from Random Tech will NOT discolor your silver sills unless you are running rich and have an overheat issue from that. One of my customers says "now my sills are no warmer than a tortilla"

Corsa and SHF Cats on sale G2 at $1999

Thanks for the responses. Also concerned about passing emissions/safety in Missouri.

Place a heat shield in the sills.... I plan to when I install the Corsa I have in transit to me.

Likely I will go with a DEI heat shield kit. It's a self adhesive shield that will reflect heat and take very high temps directly. Adhesive is good to over 400 degrees, I believe. I'll check...

Please post up the info on this when you decide what you are using. I have yellowing on my sills(hi flow cats) and will likely get them repainted soon, so I'd like to address at the same time. Thanks!

I had same problems and had to repaint my side sills. I went to american racing headers, corsa high flow cats and corsa cat back. Big thing for temp reduction on the was putting the vents on end caps of side sill and also putting the thick insulation available to wrap the cats (http://www.roeracing.com/productcart/pc/Side-Sill-Insulation-Kit-p203.htm). The side sills stay at a fairly neutral temperature now that isn't burning anymore (used to burn my leg touching them). I don't how much the high flow cats reduced versus insulation, but given that the headers entering the side sill and exposed cat back exhaust beyond the sills are still super hot, my sense is the insulation (from Roe per link) was the biggest proponent of reducing the heat that burnt my sills. I only have a few thousand miles since repaint and exhaust (versus 60k prior) so can't speak to long term results but temperature took a nosedive and my suggestion is focus on insulation as much as the cat choices.

Oh yea I forgot about the added vents to the front and rear of my side sills...The more air flow the better.

Corsa with randomtech hi flo cats. My car came with the setup when I bought it from the second owner who installed it. The sills were slightly yellowed when I got it, but that was likely during the first owner's time as I've had no additional yellowing since I got it. Car had 19,XXX miles when purchased and has 30,XXX two years later.

I went catless for 6 yrs. Loved the sound, very loud! But, if/when O2's get "lazy" and start running a bit on the rich side, rear bumper stain is PITA.
I added hi-flows 2 yrs ago and love it. I've not had to wet-sand my bumper since or use any kind of abrasive polish
A bit more floor heat, but I can live with that.
I've got some 3" dia cat-deletes if interested....

My 02 ACR has very low miles and currently don't have any discoloration on the side sills. The side sill vents and Row Racing insulation sounds like a good way to go to reduce the heat on the sills and prevent any discoloration. Where did you get the vents from?

Sorry to hijack.

Anyone got a catback laying around?

My silver GTS had the cats and burnt sills when I got. It also had a Randomtech 3" catback with a rear crossover muffler delete pipe. I replaced the cats with a straight pipe and added spark plug non foulers on the rear sensors based on Plumcrazy's advice and never looked back. It's like a different car without all that damn heat and no discoloration after 5 seasons. I would recommend the rear crossover pipe to everyone as it mixes both sides for a nice even tone. I get a ton of compliments and you can hear it coming from a mile away literally I'm told.

I have Corsa and the Random Tech on mine. The side sills are cool and the car sounds mean.
