As you may have already heard, "early bird" registration is NOW OPEN for the 10th Annual Vipers at the Tail of the Dragon event which takes place Thursday, May 28th through Sunday, May 31st. This is a BIG YEAR for our region as we are co-hosting the event with AL/TN. On top of that, it is also a National VOA "Bucket List" Event. If you haven't yet experienced the Tail of the Dragon or the many attractions of Gatlinburg, this is the year to go! Last year, we had 75 Vipers attend, and this year, we're expecting over 100 from all over the country!

For those that have not attended before, the Tail of the Dragon is considered by many as one of the world's foremost motorcycling and sports car roads. Join us for a weekend of excitement as we experience this stretch of US129 with 318 curves in 11 miles! We'll also enjoy a scenic drive and stops along the Cherohala Skyway which is a 40+ mile long National Scenic Byway. However, driving isn’t the only event on the venue. We’ll also experience the many attractions of Gatlinburg, a Grande Reception Dinner, door prizes, an exclusive Viper parade through downtown Gatlinburg, and endless FUN with your Viper friends!

Have a look at our registration page for additional details and view the detailed itinerary in the forums too! Register during early bird registration and save $20 per person!

TIP: I do recommend registering early to ensure you are able to get a room in the host hotel and seats for the Ballroom Dinner on Friday night as space is limited!

There is also an optional Pirelli plant tour available Monday, June 1st which you can read more about in the above pages.

Just like last year, we'll be arranging a Viper convoy from the various zones of the Carolinas to Gatlinburg, TN!

It's about 1 hour and 15-45 minutes to where we staged last year at the Chilhowee Lake end of the TOD, depending on if you're at the beginning or end of the caravan. :car-smiley-003: :car-smiley-003: :car-smiley-003: :car-smiley-003: :car-smiley-003: ........ I can't go. I only live 40 min from the tail so I have driven it. I have to be in Raleigh that weekend. A good place to get a hotel is in Cherokee, Bryson city Or sylva. Cherokee is the closest and is full of nice hotels because of the huge casino. The others have good bed and breakfasts. Cherokee is roughly 40 min from tail once your on expressway. You can also take a fun and beautiful road through the smokies to get to gatlinburg and pigeonforge in 50 min. (Thats where i took my profile pic). Let me know if I can help

Hap. It had to be devastating to be sitting on the side of I-40 in a brand new Viper. That's why your "crew" turned around and came to your rescue. Tom Sessions remedied your problem and we made the shots session (Carolinas VOA rocks and takes care of our own!). We called your room that morning for the pic event at the Biltmore, but I must have gotten the wrong room number. OOPS! Sorry. I still thought you had my sunglasses. :o Won't Hap-pen again! BTW, it was NOT ME that switched out that relay while you were at the rest stop that cut out your engine... Sorry, muss-a be de vodka agin...

If you can you definitely want to leave with the group on Thursday. If we take the same route as we did last year it was a great ride through the mountains to get to Gatlinburg. One of the best scenes, was going through Cherokee and having the locals in full Indian costumes filming the Vipers as were drove by.

Having gone up EARLY on Friday morning last year to catch the main group leaving the hotel for the Dragon, I recommend going up Thursday. Most of the Carolinas group went up Thursday but we couldn't due to work constraints; we left at like 330-4am on Friday just to meet the group in the parking lot. We put quite a few miles in on Friday and I was absolutely drained from driving by Friday afternoon. Link up with Thursday's caravan if at all possible...

90+ Vipers today and still 10 more weeks to go! Wow! And with this many cars, the police may have to block off the entire main drag for the parade, meaning 4 lanes, staggered, one-way from the hotel to the restaurant. THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME!!!!!!!

If you arrive at the hotel on Thursday you actually get to ride the "Trail" twice. Once going to join all the others at Tellico Plains and then the ride back...or that's what we did last year. Try the link it will give you an idea of what I'm talking about...

Well it was brought to my attention yesterday that Thursday night is my youngest daughter's 8th grade graduation ceremony; which I still don't understand the purpose. Nonetheless, it has thrown a monkey wrench in my plans. If you will recall, I changed my reservations to accommodate my oldest daughter's Saturday night prom. So now I'm trying to determine if driving up Friday morning early, and leaving Saturday morning is even worth our time.

We were in the car for quite a while that day, but it was a fun day. Sucks that things keep cutting your available time short.

Wife and I are coming up from FL earlier that week to visit family near Fayetteville, NC, any chance anyone is leaving that area
Thursday morning to head over to ToD event? Would be nice to cruise over with some other Vipers.

Plans and times aren't finalized yet, but there will be a sizable group that leaves from the Raleigh area sometime Thursday morning. The caravan will make a few stops along I40 to pickup more members as it heads west across the state. I'd recommend hooking up with the Raleigh folks or connecting with the main caravan at one of our stops heading west. The caravan details will be posted in the forums once we finalize everything.

Hey everyone,

It's just around the corner! In about two weeks, many of us will be headed to Gatlinburg, TN for the annual Tail of the Dragon event. We already have 32 Vipers registered from the Carolinas and a grand total of 130 slithering into Gatlinburg from all over the states! This will be an unforgettable event to say the least with close to 220 people registered! If you haven't yet signed up, it's not too late. You can sign up here: http://carolinasvoa.com/tod_registration.htm

If you've already registered, please be sure you name is in the list below. The Viper convoy arrangements to Gatlinburg are being planned and will be announced soon!

We are looking to leave EARLY from the Raleigh area because some of us have committed to assist at the registration table....probably 6:30am.

However, I do know that John S is heading out later so you might be able to convoy with him?

I can't answer about the question about registration and room availability (Brian, Joel?), but I can help with some of the other questions. For most, the event kicks off on Thursday the 28th. We have a ton of Vipers coming from different areas in the Carolinas, but there will be one main caravan that's heading west on I40. We're still finalizing all of the stops for that caravan and will post back with details soon. The caravan will start early in Raleigh on Thursday and make a few stops along the way. Coming from Rock Hill, you probably have a few options to link up with the main caravan. I anticipate a stop in either Hickory or Statesville, so if you can head north that may be your best option.

Thursday will be a travel day for most. Friday, there will be a caravan that departs from the hotel early; this caravan will run the Dragon on it's way out to Tellico Plains and then back. Friday night is a big dinner. There are several options for Saturday morning/early afternoon including another cruise, breakfast in Cherokee, or just hanging in Gatlinburg. Saturday afternoon will be the big Viper parade through downtown Gatlinburg; this is a sight to see, especially with the amount of Vipers that will be there this year. There's a dinner Saturday night. Sunday is a travel day for those heading back home, or you can choose to participate in the Pirelli tire plant tour that is taking place in Georgia on Monday.

Yes, I have to put the kids on the school bus before heading out, so I plan to leave at a time that will allow me to get there, check in at the hotel, check in at the event registration table, and get to the dinner site which I understand to be Alamo Steak House (only 5 minutes from the event hotel). It looks to be a 5 hour drive from RDU to Gatlinburg, figuring dinner is around 6pm(?), so already eat lunch and be fueled up, and leave no later than noon (I'm probably flexible for a bit earlier if desired). If anyone else wants to tag along, let me know!

We were in the car for quite a while that day, but it was a fun day. Sucks that things keep cutting your available time short.

I'm going to get creative. I think I will follow the convoy until around Ashville...maybe further, then go back home, attend the middle school graduation, then head to Gatlinburg afterwards, and get there around 1:00 a.m; wake up and do the Dragon.

You could just join in on the road, on 40 in Greensboro, if desired. I could call you (if only I had a phone #!) when we leave RDU around 10am, presumably you would already be 15-20 minutes into the drive, then be on the north side on the highway at a gas station or fast food place for 10 minutes or so for ease of west-bound highway entry, communicate your whereabouts once there and as we enter greensboro from the east, we communicate our status, and then roll in with us when the time is right.

Later Raleigh Caravan Itinerary
Below is the itinerary for the later caravan out of Raleigh. That should work pretty well for those leaving the coast hopefully, and if desired, you could give me a call en route and try to arrange a rolling meet on I40 around Hillsborough/Mebane (e.g., if you are at I40/I85 Exit 160 and arranged to roll on the highway around 11:10).

Everyone should be able to join by there, then 1-2 rest/gas stops when needed.

Every time we have an event, I think they can't get any better. Well, DUH!!! Joel and Brian made a VOA regional event a national event this weekend. Marcia and I had a fabulous time and the accolades and photos soon to be posted by many will make that clear. We want to thank Joel, Brian, all the guest speakers, and especially Seth for his most heart-warming, needless to say tear-jerking performance which nobody saw coming.

I want to also let everyone in the Carolinas Region know that this was the first event in the past two years I attended without my Viper being attacked by some rock, bottle, highway alligator, hit-and-run driver, etc (you all know) which left some lasting impressions on her. But one minor incident did occur. Out of almost 150 beautifully detailed Vipers waiting at the staging area prior to the parade through the resort town of Gatlinburg, a lone irrigation sprinkler head popped up and soaked the side of my car. Alas, the saga continues...:o

I cannot express in words how incredibly amazing this event was!!! Just unbelievable! That was the best fun I've ever had in my Viper....but in all honesty, we had the best time hanging out with all of our Viper friends!!! Here's a little teaser pic until tomorrow. Vipers parading the town of Gatlinburg.....~150 of them;)

This was my first Dragon event and the first event since joining the Carolina's group (not counting Biltmore 6 years ago). Diane and I had a great time and I learned several things;
1) Bat Sh!t crazy is not a bad thing.
2 When the convoy itinerary says the next stop is in one hour and its 90 miles, that is NOT a math error.
3) When Ralph said we are all family connected by a common theme, the car, he was saying something I already knew. We met most of you for the first time and were immediately made to feel as if we were life long friends. That is the most prevalent thing I've seen with the Carolina's group. Thank you for an incredible weekend.

Yea, she's getting really good....almost down to an art!

Ron, it was great to finally meet you and Tammy! I wish I could have got to speak with you more at the event. Janelle enjoyed speaking to Tammy at various times and said was "really sweet". Look forward to seeing you next time...and hopefully Tammy too!

I think Tammy's involvement at this point is a given. She's already talking about the Biltmore trip.

Was there ever an official count? Very late in the parade staging, I counted 105-106 lined up.
I'm guessing parade was around 110, overall for weekend, 130+

I had an incredible time this weekend. Ian has been bit and he will be talking to his wife about how they can budget for a Gen 1 Viper for the next year!
No lie...aside from decent food and sleep, I missed Viper club events more than anything else over the past 9 months. I love being part of this family!!!

Thank you so so so much for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. I felt welcomed home with open arms!

FRIDAY NIGHT BALLROOM DINNER! A night we will NEVER forget! We had over 200 people at the ballroom dinner from 18 VOA regions.....INCREDIBLE! Special guests were Maurice Liang, Ralph & Doris Gilles, Dave Colletti from Pirelli, and Carolina member (and great friend) Seth Green who just returned from a 9 month deployment in Afghanistan. There were a lot of emotions during Seth's speech especially when he presented Doris Gilles a "Patriotic Civilian Service" award. Doris continuously delivered care packages to Seth and his soldiers throughout the deployment which positively affected the morale of his soldiers. It was a very moving moment and I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.

BELOW: Carolinas VOA Members scouting the VOA merchandise table operated by Bob & Sandi White. Side note: This was the first time I ever met Bob & Sandi and to say what wonderful people they are is an understatement. Not only did they bring merchandise from afar (Michigan!) in their Viper, but they were extremely helpful throughout this event and always offered a helping hand. It was truly a privilege to meet and work with them.

A special thanks to Dr. Angel & Dr. Paul for taking care of my sprained ankle. My primary care physician told me I needed to continue icing the ankle. BELATEDLY: Wow, what a turnout! Impressive!

Does anyone know anyone that did TotD during VOI7?

While I prefer the coupe in almost every situation, TotD is where a roadster really shines.

And did anyone deal with 18-wheeler trailer axles in their lane? I came very close but luckily was barely able to stop before I got into the curve. (I wasn't at your event but did TotD during VOI7.

Again, what a great turnout!
