View Full Version : T6060 5th and 6th gearchange

I have changed the gearing on several 2008-10 Vipers lately and the results have been very positive. On the 2010 model they changed 5th gear to make it more usable. I have been changing 5th and 6th gear, thus putting them closer to each other. I have been pleasantly surprised how much more usable the 5th and 6th gears are. You can actually stay in 6th gear down to 50mph and still have enough power to accelerate and pass someone if you want to.
For those of you who have 2008-2010 Vipers or those who have fitted the later T6060 to your earlier year model viper. There are some close ratio 5th ad 6th (.80 and .63) gear sets available. This allows you to reach top speed in 6th instead of 5th and makes 6th gear much more user friendly. This change makes the upper gears more responsive, putting the engine in the better part of the torque range.
For those with the later T6060 (2009-10) that has the .80 5th gear, you can get just the lower 6th gear.

I think my 2010 stock ratio's are just perfect and would not change a thing. Almost never downshift in normal driving.
14 seconds faster to 200 MPH and has seen 24 MPG on an 80 MPH interstate Cruise. Seemed like constant downshifting to accelerate in my previous Vipers.

Yep. I already had 3.33's in the car before I blew up the tranny. When I replaced it, it got the revised 5th and 6th. Love it!

Would changing the differential gears have the same affect as changing the 5th and 6th in the tranny? if not, what is the difference ?

Would this swap the same into a T56 for the Gen3? TowDawg, is that all you did, swap gears in your T56?

I did a lot of research into this over the last few months looking to top 190mph at the Texas Mile.
Last March I did 161mph at the half and 186mph at the full mile. (We did have a bit of a tailwind that day, so these are a bit inflated.) I would like to bust 190mph with the GenIV engine and I still need to port and polish the intake. Currently it is around 600rwhp. So as you can see from the numbers above, the car is a dog in 5th gear in the second half of the mile. I looked into different gear for 5th and 6th, and then had my mind made up that was what I was going to do. I then took a 3,000 mile DustBall Rally trip in it and I was DAMN GLAD I did not change out 6th. I am going to go to 3.55 rear end (which I did in my Gen III and like it) and see how it does in the Mile. If I still think gearing is holding me back after that, I will change the 5th gear out.
Here is a great gearing calculator if you are looking to see how the match works out on changes. You will need to put your own data in for rear gears tires etc. Stock ratios are below.

2013: 2.66, 1.58, 1.19, 1.00, 0.770, 0.63

I would assume the gear change could be done in the t56, but I'm not 100% sure. I had Rockland Gears build me one of their Tranzilla transmissions. I't basically 6060 internals (plus some upgrades) in the t56 case. At least that was my understanding of it. lol
Unbolting parts and putting new ones on is easy for me. The working (and specifically all of the tiny specs and tolerances) internals of the trans, are not something I've tried to tackle on my own yet.
Changing your rear gear will definitely make the higher gears more usable by itself. The obvious difference is that by changing the rear gears, you effect the final drive ratio in ALL gears. By physically changing individual gears in the transmission, you only change the final drive ratio for whatever individual gear(s) you change.

I have to concur with Dan- We have done a bunch of these too, and it tends to be a favorite modification for the guys who have done it. In essence, you fix the 5th/6th gear problem, without taking 1-4 in the wrong direction along with them. This is especially beneficial for the cars which make decent power and would like to retain their 3.07 rear, but want to gain a usable 5/6.
IMHO, the 5/6 change + 3.07 is a superior setup to the Gen-5 altered trans ratios and final drive. They come out similar, but the Gen-5 gearing has odd spacing for 3rd gear, where the Gen-4 gearing w/altered 5/6 is nearly perfect spacing between ALL gears.
I put 3.55 gears in my car. 5th and 6th gears are now more useable. 5th is about where 4th was - a bit higher and 6th is great for interstate. In 6th at 80 mph I am turning under 2000 rpm - about 1750. Acceleration is not great in 6th but you can pass cars without downshifting and it will lug down to 60-65 if you want. If you can't redo the gearbox, go with a gear swap. In any case, the gear change made the car much easier to drive in 1st thru 3rd as you have ready to go right now - especially in 2nd and 3rd. You do have to be a bit more careful on cold and wet roads but that was a given with the 3.07 gears.
Would changing the differential gears have the same affect as changing the 5th and 6th in the tranny? if not, what is the difference ?

What is available for the T56 along these lines?
what is the cost to swap the 5th-6th gear ratios? I have an 09 ACR so I don't think top speed will be in 6th with all my aero stuff...

You can do the same in the T56 using Aston Martin parts and get a .80 5th and a .63 6th.
Basically IMO if you are happy with your 1-4 gears but hate the boggy feel of 5th and 6th you'd change your tranny 5th and 6th for shorter gears ( mile races, half mile races)
and if you'd like 1-4 as well as 5th and 6th shorter geared for DD power all over and drag race type cars, change differential gearing. Some may even choose both depending on end goals of your beast and her duties. :saw:

I've talked to RPM transmissions about doing exactly this for the TR-6060 (in 2008+ Vipers), and this was their response:
The TR6060 is great because you can change 5th and 6th independently. If you like the low cruise RPM of 6th gear you can just add the .80 5th gear. The pair of gears are $550.00 and Labor would be $250.00 if you sent your trans to us. Its pretty labor intensive because you because you have to tear the entire trans down to remove 5th gear from the mainshaft.
5th/6th gears in the older T-56 transmissions were a cluster, so they'd have to be replaced as a single piece...it limits your flexibility a little, but if you can find the right 5th/6th cluster from another application, it can be done to a T-56 as well.

Its less than 2k for the whole job to change both gears. Biggest expense is the gears, which are of a higher quaility than the production stuff. The transmission needs to come out. Also the production gears are really hard to remove and require specialized tools.
If you make big power you will want to upgrade the fluid as well, the production ATF+4 will not hold the load. BG Synchromesh and Syntorque work great for the Turbo cars.
As stated above you can do the same upgrade on the T-56, but it requires a new cluster. I am getting current pricing on that as well. Thanks!

I don't think the 2013 has the 2.66 first gear. Don't think you could get to 60MPH without shifting. I believe it's around 2.20, if anyone cares....

How do you ship a trans across country? What type of turn around time is it to get this done for a 2009 ACR trans?

FedEx Freight did one for me recently. Was a couple hundred bucks half way across the country to Texas. You are going to need a box/crate. Got it in 4 days IIRC. Ask JonB about this as well. I shipped one for him the other day (Texas to MN?), but I do not recall the freight carrier that picked it up.

The gears in my 2010 ACR compared to my 08 were night and day. The 5th revision alone is well worth the money if you're going to use your car for higher speeds. After doing 1 mile event and hitting 5th you'll see why. You'll just slam through gears and the car pulls, and pulls, and pulls then you hit 5th and it's like you're hitting brakes.
For most I wouldn't say drop your tranny and rush to get it done but if you're in there doing a clutch or slave it would be worth looking at.

Agreed. I put a new ACR-X tranny in mine recently. Can't wait to get down to Texas Mile again.
