I cant seem to find any previous postings about this but I need help with choosing Pads, rotors, and fluid for my 01.

I think it has all OEM parts right now but rotors are glazed and grooved and squeak as a result. I do mostly street but I like to fully enjoy it. I was thinking about doing slotted rotors. Not sure what kind of parts to get. I dont really understand the differences I just see prices.

Thanks

I have stock size 13" Rotors. There are lots of Brake options out there, some people go for the larger Gen 3, 14" rotors buying Gen 3 Front brake calipers and taking the Gen II front brake calipers and fitting those to the rear of the car.
I also notice you have a 2001 car which has ABS so Personally I don't know much on how that set up works as I don't have Nanny Aids on my car :D

Now if you want to stick with stock size 13 Rotors these are what I know are available.

EBC produce a slotted and Dimpled one piece rotor.

BAER Produce a 2 piece rotor, JonB Partsrack has these available it comes in a Slotted and Drilled pattern.

Roe Racing also produce a slotted only 2 piece rotor

Another make you could look at is Stoptech

Now I have just been dealing with BAER Directly and they have supplied me new 13" 2 piece Slotted only Rotors.
Their on line catalogue is not clear on what you need but If you would like part numbers and further information Drop me a PM and I will give you contact details.
Here's a pic
Got them Zinc plated too to keep the internal vents from rusting up :)

Call Jonb. He has everything you need!

I personally would go slotted, 1 piece since you just want them for street. Slotted 2 piece will probably cost you more.
I would also go dot 4 fluid, even for "spirited" street driving. Motul 600, not much more and worth it.

Best Pad for Track are Performance Friction, very aggressive Not cheap.

I use EBC Reds on the front of my car, their OK but Im sure theres better out there, Just depends on how aggressive you drive and how much dust you can put up with?

I use 600 Motul Racing brake fluid.

Josh, as Leslie said, DOT 4 is the fluid to use. Tom Sessions likes the Mopar DOT 4, but the trick is changing it out every couple years no matter what brand you use.

I'm still running stock pads and rotors, but if you are looking to get a used set, I think NextPhase has rotors he may want to sell. Gutterworks129 bought some pads and rotors locally and really likes them, so you might want to ping him and see what he bought.

Have you been able to get out driving recently or are the roads salted up now?

I have gone thru many different pads and rotors. All the drilled rotors will crack. All of the slotted rotors have cracked. I got a set of EBC dimpled rotors, they cracked. Best bet is to use an OEM replacement rotors. The brake pads I have found that were the best are the Mintex Extreme, with the Hawks being a close second. They will dust up a bit though. If you staying with the 13" setup, stay with the stock rotors. Check your PMs.

JonB will give you all the info you need, give him a call. I ended up getting a stoptech bbk front and rear for my gen 2 and I could not be happier!

Take a look at RockAuto for ideas...

Josrocket....

I did the big brake upgrade Fatboy18 mentioned... You can see the write-up here.

http://driveviper.com/forums/threads/3663-Viper-Big-Brake-Upgrade-Gen-2-Viper

Now... On the rotors.... Go with slotted. I have never had a slotted rotor crack. Cross drilled yes.... But not slotted. I have slotted on my SRT8 that have never cracked and I have had two sets each being replaced after 45,000 miles. I've made hundreds of 1/4 mile passes and have driven that SRT8 over various mountain road cruises before the Viper took that role over. The slotted rotors on the Viper are still perfect after a couple of mountain road cruises through Tennessee and the NE. No worries at all.

I listed the parts I used... You'll see the Stoptech rotors and Hawk pads. I've loved the setup. Awesome and highly recommended.

Ok I was thinking about getting the StopTech Slotted Rotors:

I have one concern. These are silver rotors right?

Also the pads. I was thinking about the EBC reds from JonB

What do you guys think?

BTW thanks for all the help everyone.

I never seemed to see rave reviews for the Reds. Check out Stop Tech and Hawk pads. I bought front and rears from Discount tire at a good price last year. Seems to be a good combo for mainly street application. Give their customer service a call; they're awesome and were generally interested in talking Viper. I used Stop techs in the front and Hawks in the rear. No squeal, little dust and better stopping power from the OEM pads. Good option if you're not upgrading calipers.

My other choice for pads is the Hawks: http://theviperstore.com/Viper2_Products_Performance_Brakes.htm

I have a 97 GTS with stock calipers and Hawk Street pads with entry level eBay Racing rotors. 2 Seasons and brakes work great, no cracked rotors or rotor issues. I have a complete set of Gen 3 calipers sitting for a future full brake conversion, will look into bigger better rotors then. For now the basement brand rotors have been working fine.

I went with Hawk and I love them. I don't track the car but do take it on mountain roads for hard drives yearly and love them. Never a single fade issue, stops hard, quiet, low dust.... honestly I love them.

I have never used EBC but I have buddies that have on their cars and they have liked them. All are reds. I have seen one EBC rotor crack, but it was a drilled unit and I have seen many brands fail, so no surprise there. Its all in how you punish the brakes. As for the pads though.... I have not heard complaints.

On the Hawk HPS pads, the part numbers are, for a stock 2001 Viper:

Brake Pads - Viper Gen 2 Front Part Number: HB194F.665
Brake Pads - Viper Gen 2 Front Part Number: HB428F.650

I noticed that, on the link you listed, it mentions not having Hawk HPS available for the fronts of the 2001 & 2002... I think it may be a typo because they are available and the part number is above. The prices on the link you showed are fine....

I saw those too... They were not done when I did the Viper and I just did the Charger SRT8.... but I wonder what the deal is with those... They are only about $15 bucks more per axle...Curious to see what others say.

New BAER rear rotor now fitted, The internal diameter was larger on these rotors requiring the additional purchase of new lightweight hats, same 13" outer diameter. I now have the correct hats just got to do the other 3 Discs now :)

Heres a pic of the old BAER Eraddispeed rotor, as you can see the centre hat is smaller and there is a lot of unused disc!

Had the new rotors Zinc plated to make them stay shiny for a bit longer :)

Holy crap the replaced studs on the hub are long as hell! Are you running spacers that large to need that?

Fatboy 18
02-18-2015, 04:10 PM
Thats how they came fitted to the car when I bought it, I know they are longer than stock. threads are 1/2" 20, Lug nuts are 22m socket size.

I have 3 sets of wheels for this car, the OEM 5 spoke dish wheels, Pruner CCW Classic wheels and the BBS wheels, the CCWs have the widest offset, but the studs are long!

Not sure who fitted them or what the reasoning was? It takes 32 full turns to take each wheel nut off, I got fed up doing them manually so bought a wheel gun :)
