Thanks buddy! I'm curious how this will hold up with the salt in the winter from the daily driver. There is no drain in the garage so the salt from the road just melts with slush and puddles in the garage. It peeled off 2 coats of epoxy with 3 coats of sealant so I gave up on that method. I'll post back up after this coming up winter is over.

Lunch, I feel ya on the no drain. I live in Arizona so don't have snow//slush/salt but I would like to be able to wash the car (or anything else for that matter) in the garage. I have wondered if the answer is to pour (well, have my friend who owns a masonry company pour) 2" of concrete at a slight angle with a wide, flat drain built in.

Though if your garage floor has a slight slope to it so as to slope forward towards the bay door, I think those tiles are made to let stuff drain out underneath. It seems people on here have said that. Perhaps the thought on the daily driver though is counterintuitive. Think more, not less. The slush and salt falls off the DD and sits there. Run the hose once a week, dilute the salt and grime, help it drain out as opposed to sit and evap. I could be wrong, but just a thought.

Matt, is that an epoxy flooring? If so, is it a commercial product? Available for residential? how does it do under the 4 poster? I like epoxy because I need to be able to roll my lift around. Any lifting under warm tires?

It is a polyuria coating. It is a commercial application and is very durable. Best flooring I have ever had. Can slide the jacks around and does not leave a mark. They have a home edition called Rock Solid.

This thread makes me feel poor.

Any suggestions on flooring? I've always thought an epoxy type "painted" flooring was my best choice, but always worried it peels.

I assume tile type is essentially not prone to lifting, but significantly more expensive? Is there such thing as a happen medium for my lowly 2-car garage?

Your screen name looks familiar. Are you from ATL with a yellow supra by chance? My garage tiles ran $2.20 per squarefoot. I gave up with epoxy due to peeling but they dont salt in ATL so you could have better luck.

$2.20 sq/ft is pretty steep - what type of setup is it?

Yep that's me, glad to see you pick up a viper too!?! Its actually cheap for a plastic tile, a lot are around $3-5/sq ft. Epoxy is the best bang for the buck though. You could do your whole garage for less than $100.

Nice! Can I ask - do you have to put anything on the lift surface? It's always felt like the lift points on my car were an 1/8th of an inch recessed compared to the bottom of the rocker and I wouldn't want to scratch the paint down there every time you lift the car.

But of course!.... there are a two sets of pads. One set is about one inch high but spans the width of the lift's pad. These are great because you can run them lengthwise or across the frame etc. The second set are smaller blocks about 4x6 inches in size and 2 inches tall. These are for more precise lift points. Since the Viper is a frame/body car, you can use either.

Here's a shot of the wide pad with the car on it. This is the one inch high version.

Yes, there are two Liftmaster 3800 jackshaft door openers in the bays with the lifts. The door tracks had to be raised up for clearance. They are almost a thousand a piece by the time you get done buying them and having someone modify the tracks and install them. I wouldn't say that they are commercial grade but they're much higher quality and function much better than the standard door opener in the first bay.

You need one on each side of the door or just 1 for each door to raise it ? I guess any garage door company can do this work?

You need one on each side of the door or just 1 for each door to raise it ? I guess any garage door company can do this work?

1 per door. Yes it's best to get an experienced installer. It's much more difficult than a standard opener. It even has an independent automatic dead bolt lock in the track.

Thanks! I just need one for one door so I can get a 4 post lift and stack'em, My ceiling is 10'5" but the opener is kinda low. How tall is your ceiling?

Ceiling is 12' but 10' 5" is fine unless you need to put an SUV or truck underneath. The specs on most of these lifts are very detailed typically with every measurement you need.

One at the top of every barn. You are looking at some of the finest cast iron castings ever made. From 1880 to 1920 this was what made American farms great. During Ww1 and ww2 no man would climb the 50 feet into the air to bring them down for the metal drives.

Backed the car out of it last night for the last time.

Moved to a nicer place with a bigger yard on a lake, but a much smaller and older garage. Going to have to build a bigger one in a few years.

Have you ever considered buying a mustang?

Really some beautiful classics there. Are they originals, resto-mods? I really like the green fastback.

I personally like a good resto-mod. I guess since I wasn't there for the original, I am not nostalgic for an original. I love the late 60s/early 70s mopars and, money not being an object, would love a resto-mod general lee charger.

Sweet! That's a great gift. Does he do them one-off or once he makes one is it easier to make and he makes more of them?

I had a custom leather bag made to match my car (go to the thread about it called "custom leather" in the Arizona section to see it) and for that, once he had the special stamps made of the logo it's easier to make more, but getting the custom tools mad was expensive. Similar concept with the neons or no?

Yes, polished porcelain. The key is to get tile with a PEI of 4 or 5 to keep scratches away. I've had no issue. Tile also has a slipperyness rating. I've also had no issues.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a daily, high use garage. I'd go nuts trying to keep the floors clean if it were.

California definitely sucks in terms of real estate affordability. I look at some of these garages and I realize that for the price of a 1-2 bedroom condo here in LA I can buy a mansion in most of the country and have a beautiful garage...

Vprbite

I don't know how you guys do it in LA. I love in a beautiful area of Tucson in a 61 yr old all brick house on over an acre of land for what you couldn't quite get into a condo for in LA. My garage was built a long time ago thoug and is small so at some point I will be adding on. I have been trying to get the contractors to take I.O.U.s but so far they are being wildly unreasonable.

Just got a sample tile from race deck. When i stand on it, it sounds a bit hollow. How noticable is that once the whole floor is done?

I won't ever waste money on race deck again. They don't stand behind their product at all (if you call for warranty issues, someone is always "looking into it" and "will get back to you"). The tiles exposed to light do discolor over time. It is EXTREMELY slippery, even when it's not wet, i.e. You can take a dive if you run out there in your socks. If you use a car jack on the tile, it will smash the tile/cause indentations, or I used jack stands and the feet don't have rubber shoes on them, it's basically exposed angle iron, and as soon as I lowered the car, the jack stand cut right through the tile like a knife. It's impossible to keep it looking as good as new if you actually use your garage. Water spots everywhere, avoid black. However, the light colors stain very easily. So, those are a few of the issues I can think of right now....plus it's expensive.

It's very noticeable. It sounds like you're walking on hollow plastic! It echos somewhat, too. If you drag your feet when you walk (like my kids), it sounds like a rasp or a washboard.

I'll give you my evaluation once it's installed, but there are many people quite happy with it.
Go to the garage journal website and research. There are a thousand posts.
People have made the exact opposite observation regarding their customer service.
They also CLEARLY make the point that a sharp steel edge could damage it, kind of a no brainer there.
A layer of landscape felt under the tile stops the echo and rebound effect, it was forty bucks for 800 sq feet.
There are pros and cons to any flooring, pays to research.

It looks like you picked the TuffShield variety, so the slippery surface is to be expected. Also, that type of jack stand will do the same thing to asphalt...either buy a different type of jack stand that has pads on the bottom or invest in a few plates of steel to distribute the load.

Thanks guys! I found this logo on the internet and took it to staples print center. They blew it up max size 2x3' I believe and printed it for me. I then cut out the snake and taped it to wall. I got one of those spray canisters from home depot and used my wall paint (diluted) to create an outline of the image. Lastly I filled it in with tiny paint roller and brushes. I'm sure there's an easier way of doing this but I'm not the least bit artistic!

I'll get you the information tomorrow. It's a through the wall unit for a 1200 square foot apartment. My garage is 600 square feet. It heats, cools, dehumidifies, and has a fan. Think I paid a grand for it. Always 70 in the garage year round.

I put down a very thin synthetic landscape felt first, just in case it might tend to have a clackity clack sound as others have sometimes noted.
It seems to work, although the floor is relatively new and flat. Probably wasn't needed but couldn't hurt and might help.

I figured that's what it was. When I asked Racedeck how to help the 'hollow' sound, they suggested landscape fabric under the tiles.

Being a synthetic material it isn't supposed to, but who knows years from now. It is what RaceDeck recommends if you are concerned about the sound. I would not have that issue as the cars are never wet or snowy. I would probably not have done it in that kind of snowy wet environment.

The RaceDeck definitely has a "sound" and a feel when walking on it. It concerned me right way after the install but less so now. My wife didn't even notice it. There is no doubt you're walking on a modular plastic floor. But, the trade off is ease of install, looks fantastic and is practically impervious to any fluids staining it. Easy to replace a tile if needed. Very comfortable to kneel on.

Every floor has its pros and cons but after weighing them I decided an epoxy or painted floor wasn't going to work. I thought about porcelain tiles like my buddy PythonPete but the down time and astronomical expense wasn't worth it to me. I'd have to store two cars for a week+ and I have nowhere for that.

I have heard that Epoxy is hard to apply extremely well, and if you don't do it right it will start to peel at edges.

I was planning on using epoxy in my new garage. What are the cons of epoxy?

Perfect prep work is absolutely crucial to it sticking well...I'm not sure who did the epoxy in my garage (was done before we bought the house), but it is getting worse with each year that passes. The spots that are peeling up aren't massive, but they are an eyesore, and it isn't going to get any better as time marches on. Probably doesn't help that Ohio salts the crap out of their roads in the winter, and that salty, slushy mess ends up on my garage floor.

If you can find a pro to apply it that will back it up with a lifetime warranty, it might be worth considering. Otherwise, I'd pass, especially if it is a DIY project.

If you are so inclined, go take a look at the Garage Journal Forum - lots of DIY Epoxy horror stories over there. Some successes as well. Definitely worth a read.

The epoxy is a joke. No matter how well you prepare the surface, it will come up eventually. The warranty is also a joke. If it starts to come up, all they will say is that you didn't prepare the surface correctly.

I had a professional group do epoxy with vinyl chip with a 20 year warranty and I'm very pleased. I think "hit tire pickup" is one of the main problems with epoxy - without both really good prep (acid wash and surface grinding) and a really good product, people end up with crummy results. The flip side is that is you get a really good one, it can stand up to just about anything. I drop all kinds of fluid on mine - gasoline & brake fluid included - and it still looks new after a mop.

If this helps, I have done two floors with epoxy. My first job, (shop) worked out very well with very little lifting. My seconded, (garage) my son and I prepped the floor like crazy, from power washing 3 times, sanding the floor with two different grit sizes, acid wash and then power washing again to get the acid off. The floor started to lift with in two months. Two years later, it looks like we never did any prep at all and has lifted in three major spots.

I was talking to a pro and he told me that getting ALL of the acid off is the trick and getting the acid neutralized is a must, because the acid will set there in the cement pores and if the floor sweats at all the acid is re-activated and will cause the epoxy to lift.

Take this information for what it's worth, I'm just frustrated at what the garage floor looks like now. I'm looking at polishing the garage floor next, who knows??

The RaceDeck tiles are not "flat" on the backside. They have channels so when water, etc. drain under the tiles, the fluid will follow its natural flow to your drain or out of the garage.

This is what it looks like on the backside of the tile.

They All have a Maximum Airflow & Drainage underneath the tiles & the Free-Flow like i have, the snow & slush will just melt thru it & it will flow out the garage or to a drain if you have one (or if need be all you have to do is just hose it down & it'll go right out). Or, if you have to you can pop out a tile & do whatever & just pop it back in. :)

Sometimes I think I'd like to make my garage as nice looking as some of the ones I see on here, but then every September, reality sets in, when I drive my Hummer back from Moab, and my garage turns into an absolute warzone of oil, grease, mud and parts.

I can still appreciate looking at them though....

I am working on a 40X60 trying to do the inside work myself. Takes a while. I will have to post pics when I am done. Stick build, 2x6 too. The attic is all storage too. Very nice to have. Here is my single car garage I still use for parking:

I finally got the bulk of the garage done. Outside, with a deck and fire pit. Inside walls are finished, but finished pictures will have to wait until the floor gets done. I have something special planned, not sure how it will come out.

I would think the wheels hanging like that would leave a permanent mark on the leather. Maybe make a board and mount the wheels to the board where the steering column shaft would go. Then mount the board to the wall.

New member here, looking forward to NVE2. Here is my shop, from the outside it is just a metal building. I spent most of my time completing the interior. It's a 50 x 50 with 10 x 10 bathroom on the side and additional tool room built on the back side. has central heat/air, central vac system, full kitchen, numerous arcade games, projector with 8' screen, lift. I done stained flooring with clear coat but would not recommend that for a shop as it does scratch easier than I thought it would but still looks nice. Also provided an aerial view of my most recent lake project.

Pics of my Race Deck flooring. So far no issues with winter road grime. 5 degrees today; -10 'feels like' temps. I have to say the flooring makes a lot of popping or crackling sounds when pulling in and out with these temps and my daily driver which I think is about 5200 lbs. No damage just the movement of the tiles being a floating floor. I thought it might be slippery when wet but not at all. Love it. Perfect way to refinish a 1940's garage floor without tons of chemicals, mixed reviews of types, etc. Plus about a 30 degree improvement (warmer) and dryer surface for the tires than the concrete surface in the detached garage. 1509115092

Stays on top? Have you ever popped up a few to look underneath? My concern is salty slush getting under and eating my concrete. Why do they make vented ones if this is not a concern?

Sybil TF,

I'm not sure what the real open designed tiles purpose is. My floor had removed asbestos tiles so there was a combination of old concrete and a tar like adhesive which was ground off but still imbedded in the concrete. I did not want to see that. The tiles I laid down fit tightly together (Race Deck-Tufshield - diamond pattern). What I did was at the top of the garage (house side) leave a couple of inches of gap to the wall (you're supposed to leave a little all the way around). For a couple of the cuts I did not snap in. That way if I need to I can use water or cleaner and water and hose clean under the tiles out to the driveway. Just shim the entry bull nose cap tiles so the water runs freely out. I figured if I do this each spring when putting away the heaters and waking up the toys it will keep everything nice.

Free standing interlocking tiles are easy maintenance. I don't experience any sound though. Here's my before & after.

Racedeck worked out well for me, gives the garage a nice clean look and is very durable. I used their "Tuffshield" design tiles for more of a showroom look, but they have regular and "freeflow" tiles as well. The theory is that with freeflow tiles the slush and muck will run out the garage after melting assuming it is pitched correctly. All the info is on the garage journal website and Racedecks as well.

Here's a story a garage website did on mine: http://allgaragefloors.com/v10-racedeck-garage-floor-project/

I did the snap-together Racedeck type tiles in my home garage. They've been in there about 4-5 years now, no issues. They make a funny clacking noise when you walk on them, but you get used to it. Water just sits on top of them, and evaporates. I don't mind these for a parking area, but I wouldn't want them in my work shop where I actually work on cars. I prefer concrete for my floor jacks.
