View Full Version : battery tender hook up ?

I used the below battery tender on my gen IV when letting the car sit thru the winter months. I used the adapter that connected permanently to the battery which enabled you to quick disconnect from the unit.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Battery-Tender-Plus-0210128-/191039879376?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c7add38d0&vxp=mtr
There was an open spot where I could run this quick disconnect thru the battery box out the back of the vehicle. The Gen V does not have the opening and I really do not want to run the chord thru the back hatch because it appears the interior lights will stay on without the hatch being closed.
Any suggestions ?

there should be Jump start point under the hood. Couldn't you connect there?

I have always plugged into the cigarette lighter on previous gens. Would that be a problem on the gen 5?

I think Jack B hooked his up under the hood and ran the cord out through one of the side vents on his Gen 5.

There's a red post under the fuse cover under the hood on the driver's side and then there are a few screws in reach to ground to. I think one of the cigarette lighter style interior plugs on the interior is always on so that may work too.

Has anyone had a car die yet that's been put into hibernation mode? I have to wonder if this is all trying to solve a problem that the engineers solved for us.

Ran mine in engine bay, exiting driver side. Will post pix tomorrow.

You can bring it thru the gill (black grill) and it is hidden, then, you do not have to open the hood. Run it to the fuse/fuse block and you have also protected the charger output circuit. I used the Centech charger, but, it is the same principal. I have multiple "Battery Tenders", but, the Centech has won me over.

See the image below for the battery tender installation on my TA. The fuse box cover is off to show the connection.

Yes. Mine was dead after 3 months in hibernation mode. So I dont trust it. I always leave it on a floating battery tender. Your battery will last way longer this way.

Start and run the car once per week year round.
Can close the hatch on the wire without issue. Just out of curiosity how long until it dies without use unplugged? 2 weeks? 3?

I have the Corvette (CTEK 3300) lighter charger. The power outlet on the center console is only powered when the ignition is in the ON or ACC position, so the CTEK will NOT work in this outlet. I have mine hooked up in the second power outlet which is located between the seat backs above the cup holders. This power outlet is connected directly by the battery and powered at all times (according to the owners manual)...
Last winter I only had it in hibernation mode for around 3 months and the battery was fine. This year I have both hibernation mode and the lighter charger plugged in...

Sounds like a good idea. Where do you run the cord out, through the back hatch or window?

Try this
First pic is ground attachment at engine block (double end stud), 2nd is harness zip tied to brace, 3rd connected, exit.

Didn't want to pinch the cord so I just rolled the window down a few millimeters. The wife thought it was a bad idea though because the new car smell might escape;)...

What feature(s) of the Centech do you prefer to the Battery Tenders? Thanks.

The Cen-Tech battery tenders are cheap and effective and available at Harbor Freight. I've used them for years and pick up spares when the price drops a few more bucks or I have a 20% off coupon from the newspaper.

It's easy enough to splice in a cigarette lighter plug if you've got an "always on" socket.

They work great, I've used them on all my cars and have one that goes back ten years still chugging along.

I extended the Battery Tender wire and ran it through the rear center cut out and permanently attached it to the battery.
Not a big deal to extend the wire.

Whats wrong with just lifting the rear floor panel and installing the wires to the battery and run it out the back? I think I spent all of 5 min installing and never have to worry about wires or zip ties.

+1
The connector wire can then tuck inside the lower outside edge of the rear diffuser when driving so it is not visible and stays put.
I use a Black & Decker charge, but most or all products should do the job.
On a related point, anyone know why our cars do not come with Optima Red Top batteries with no acid, etc.? (A Gel Battery)

For those that extend a cable off the battery, are you inserting an in-line fuse.
FSTENUF
03-06-2015, 04:26 PM
Yes, it's all in the harness from c-tec just pull up the floor lid and install. Their is room in the weather strip to pass the cable through. When you are not using it just slip it under the floor panel.

same here, infact the cord moves around with no pinching at all.

Does anyone have a close-up showing the connections to power and ground? The adapter I have will not work with side post connections as the rings are too small. Debating cutting off the terminals and replacing with something larger. Not a GEN V, but figured connections are similar and this topic is at least active.

I used an Add-A-Fuse. They are made by Littel Fuse.

There's a fuse in the battery tender wiring.
Jack B

It is an extremely easy way to add a circuit. Secondly, the inline fuse only protects down stream of the fuse, it does not protect from a short to the battery side.
There's a fuse in the battery tender wiring.

I have a die hard battery charger/maintainer. The cable end connections are just clamps like on jumper cables. I put them on and had no trouble with the cable coming out from under the trunk... No pinching on the line. Then I thought, why leave it on when I could just hook it up a couple days (at the longest) before I wanted to drive it. So that's what I'll probably do.

I have a junior and it works great. Mine is on a G4 quick clipped up to the red post under the hood with the ground just clipped to the closest bolt. The G4 and 5 are not that different and you can run the cord out the grill or side vents.

Same here - and since I always open the hood before driving (just to check to see if anything is amiss), this method works great. When I hooked up to the battery in the back, it was slightly more of a pain in the butt. Had to fumble with the cover, and the cord did look like it was going to mess with either the weather stripping or paint eventually. On the Gen V, it is a bit harder to find a good ground - but once you find the right one, it's a piece of cake to set up.

I hook the negative side ("black wire") to the boss on side of the T-stat housing on Gen III, IV, and V Vipers.

You can hook up your tender to the battery terminal on the fuse block under the hood, and chassis ground the ground (2nd pic below).
Easy hookup. (3rd pic below)
