I have not seen to many paxton builds and install pics, besides nineball tonys great write up, so i will post my mods as i go, goal here is stock internals this coming season on 8psi stock paxton pulley at 700rwhp, all being done at home in my garage. Paxton kit showed up from my friend Will RSI performance! American racing headers, SCT, upgraded heat exchanger, DLM water pump few other parts, I had todd block off the bottom bov and mount a turbosmart one up top. this will be a paxton tuner kit, i will not be using paxtons split fuel set up.

Oil pans off, learned that when you do a oil change theres still 1/4'' of oil in bottom of pan, so it got a good cleaning, paxtons 90 was little small so went and found the biggest 3/8's one I could with little more volume for charger oil drain, the Paxton manual says drill the oil pan and tap it well theres only three threads so welded up a bung to oil pan now have good nice seal.

Drilling the crank is next, not a lot of room, didn't use this 90 drill used a mac was a little smaller, when the first drill bit broke in the crank I almost flipped out lol but take the guide plate off and theres enough room to grab it, 1/16th stick out after said and done just grind it flush,

Took the pulley off and aluminum oxide blasted it, to get rid of the shiny smooth surface, great tip from nineball tony! stock oil cooler lines leak, upgraded to viper specialty ones, the stock power steering ones leak as well so they got upgraded to jtsvp braided lines, also got hard upper rad pipe kit threw jtsvp, got all that done and blower mounted. Heat exchanger got four tabs welded and installed, DLM water pump mounted and lines all ran,

BTW, here is a tip for those drilling the crank pins.
1. Remove the two engine mount nuts from underneath the frame.
2. Place a jack under the oil pan.
3. Lift up the engine enough so that the crankshaft center clears the steering rack.
That makes it a lot easier to deal with anything crank-pulley related.

Next i am making room for the install of the headers, removed the windshield wipers, windshield cowl both sides, removed hvac box on passenger side, i also will be installing new plugs, wires, screamin demon coils, fuel rails, injectors. so intake is coming off, if anyone tells you that you don't need a oil catch can on a stock car, well here are a couple pics you be the judge, puddles of oil everywhere and car has bin sitting for two months since last time started, everything caked in a oil layer.

A warning about doing that... it will bust the front exhaust hangars.

It sure will. Had no sign that it happened until I had the side panels off to do my custom header back. It stretches them and one of the ends snaps off.

Thanks Gjon, i have the intake sitting on the bench and am tempted to cut it open port it, anyone done this any thoughts on this? we all know how restricted they are main reason being hood clearance hence the reason no roots style blowers on these cars. i think there could be a few hp there for sure i could release and make it easier for the air to enter the runners maybe increase the intake volume a little too, Here is a pic i found on the internet.

Hey Paul. Anytime you port a manifold or heads or port match heads to a manifold you will pick up some power. Also anytime you have less air restriction there will be less heat build up witch in turn better air density and more power. So it comes down to a couple of factors. One is it cost effective to have this done for you? And what are you ultimate hp goals? Since you will reach your numbers you mentioned earlier in this build tread on a stock manifold its not necessary to have done. Also with the pretty efficient nature of the intercooled Paxton kits you wont be seeing a tremendous iat temp at the 7/8lbs of boost you are looking to make. But every bit counts and it sure doesn't hurt the end goal. We have had lots of Paxton Gen3 that we tuned and had to be very conservative on the timing table in attempt to kill some power being they had a stock bottom end. Thanks

I wish I had the ability to do the Paxton by myself. I had a Paxton and internals done in the fall on my 06 Coupe in Calgary. Would be interested in, maybe I don't want to know, the difference in the dollars spent. Look forward to the possibility of crossing paths with you up here in Canada.

The intake was on my work bench and i was very close to cut it open, but it just doesn't make any sense right now to cut it open and spend $1200-1400 to port polish it for unknown gains, or extrude hone it for around $1200, i really think there are some gains to be had, i just won't know at this point. so i started by welding the centre valve cover hose port as shown in pic, second that same port in the intake was a good size hump, i cut it out can see in earlier pics, ground it down smoothed it not done yet but here is a pic, next started on the headers i really thought this was gonna be a pain in the *ss, but was easy with all the stuff i had removed, 3/8's ratchet with 1/2" long socket took all the top and lower bolts out no swivels needed, driver side comes out easy, the passenger side needed some finesse but did come out with out unbolting the motor mount or lifting the motor was happy about that.

RSI Performance sent me Aero fuel regulator, mounted on firewall unbolted the wiper frame 3 bolts helped alot, next took driver rear inner fender out helped for two reasons, one was running the rsi plug and play harness to the battery and to the fuel hanger, also mounted the relays to the frame, second was running the -6 return and the -8 feed. The rsi fuel hanger upgraded the fuel pumps to AEM’s 320lph E85 compatible fuel pumps.

Didn't want to get to radical with the engine since I planned on putting the SC on....See my signature below,it Dyno at 520 Rwhp with engine work and the YouTube video below shows it doing the 666 rwhp with the Paxton, could bump it up to 8 or 9 lbs boost and get a lot more HP but I'm happy where it is....Need good forged internals before more boost

Here are a few tips I learned (sometimes the hard way) on my 06 Paxton.
1) Get the belt tensioner from Doug Levin, makes the belt tight and easier to remove.
2) Doug also glues the o-ring to the bypass valve because it tends to disappear after a while reducing seal.
3) Add a swinging oil pickup from a Gen 4. Without it you run the risk of oil starvation on hard turns.
4) Get a bigger intercooler than what comes with the kit.
5) Make sure the electronics box is zip tied to something under the dash, the velcro eventually gives up and the darn thing falls right in front of the gas pedal.
6) Keep air fuel to 12:1 or lower. Don't exceed or you may develop holes in the side of the block (don't ask me how I know).
7) I believe Dan Cragin told me that headers would lose power on a supercharged car because the reduced back pressure allows some of the charge to blow out on valve overlap.
8) If you are running the OEM PCM have Dan Cragin or someone tune it for your car. He can adjust fan on temps, fuel mixture, etc.
9) Use the NGK plugs that are a bit colder than stock, Dan used to sell them.
10) Use a different color antifreeze in the intercooler than what the radiator uses. This helps identify which one is leaking if they ever do.
11) Consider building up the bottom end.
12) Those electronic boxes from Paxton can fail and when they do weird stuff happens.
13) Use a vented cap on the intercooler tank that goes to an overflow tank. I made my own from a Paxton cap. When the intercooler fluid warms up enough on the track it can blow by the gasket of the stock cap.
14) If the plastic seal on the front of the blower pulley bolt is missing, Paxton will not honor your warranty. Mine never came with one and I didn't know it was missing until a warranty claim with Paxton.
15) Install a higher flowing intercooler pump than what comes with the kit. Dan Cragin used to sell these.
16) Wire idiot lights to auxiliary fuel pumps so you know when they come on and you know they are working. Lean conditions with a blower are bad news.
17) Install wide band O2s, boost, and fuel pressure gauge. PLX Devices had one that could be programmed to alert for certain conditions. For example mine alerted when the boost was >2.0 and air fuel was >12:1. Saved my ass once.
18) After install of the intercooler pump in front passenger side of fender (where horn is), horn sounds funny. Had to modify horn bracket to fix. Don't remember exactly why but it drove me and my Viper tech crazy for a while.
19) Carry spare belts for the blower, they are hard to find at an auto parts store.
20) Loctite bolts.
Think that's it.
jeffboyette
01-22-2015, 10:34 PM
Loctite every bolt!!! I had 2 come out, one hit the fan and took out the radiator.

LOL, the great thing about this club is you learn from someone else's experiences. It really helps avoid a lot of trial and error. I loved that 06 and it was wicked fast with the Paxton. I only sold it when the Gen 4 ACR became available as aero is king on a road course.

Installed the american racing headers, imo the best headers for a Gen 3, great quality and i knew i wanted long tubes 5 into 1, i went 1 3/4 x 3", the install i did over two nights after work, i got new factory gaskets to go with the ARH headers instead of the paper style ones, i also installed the old heat shield bolts it will go back on at the end of install. tools i used 1/4 drive, sockets 3/8's & 1/2'', swivels, extensions, stubby 3/8's wrench is the key here. Found the best price on these threw RSI performance.

Hey Paul nice collection of parts! Keep them coming. Here are a few pictures of a wideband we did on a customers car that didn't want his tach blocked by the gauge. We machined a stand that mounted inside the drivers tweeter location. Prefect view while driving. The black plastic piece in the first picture is the mount Zeitonix supplied for mounting on the Apillar.

What did you do about your downstream O2 sensors? If you have the Mopar controller, you don't need them. Plug the bung (plugs available at Lowes in hardware section). If you leave them in you will eventually melt the wires which then causes a short and which likely blows the 20amp ASD fuse. Result, car barely runs if at all. One guy, who is on this board somewhere, melted his wires on One Lap and threw something like 23 engine codes. Car didn't run. Everyone I know with American Racing headers has melted their rear O2 wires. I even had mine insulated with 1500 degreen DEI insulation. Didn't matter. Loved the headers but they melt wires. Trust me on this, I know what I'm talking about.

Yea, that is the exact same stuff I used on my O2 wires. They still cooked and I had none of the wire exposed including where the wires enter the sensor. Friends used the same insulation with the same effect. It just gets so hot in there that even that insulation can't stop the effects over a long time. I would probably weld in a new bung further upstream near where the upstream O2 is located and then install the wide band there.
PaulP

Wide band is coated sealed in its own heat shield and then dei heat tape wrapped and then in the dei fire silicone coated wrap which was $150 I should be all fine,
I should have the car on a dyno in a couple weeks to see where its at for rwhp!

One last mod i did add was a custom non-slip pulley from RSI performance, I was lucky enough to be one of the first ones to get it, 3.75 stock size paxton 8psi, here is a pic of the pulley it worked and gripped amazingly! zero slip and saw a solid 8.0 on the aem fail safe. what i like about this pulley is it won't eat belts like the carbonite coated pulleys.

Excited to see you 1/4 mile results. I made similar power and went 10.6 @131 for comparison. The BOV sounds great! You said orange spring in the video, but saw you mention in an earlier post it was a pink spring. Can you please clarify? Also, do you know if Todd made the blockoff plate for the stock BOV location or is it readily available?

I cant wait to go to the 1/4 mile track, I first had a purple spring in it first video and bov was closed at idle which is bad, then I went pink spring fixed the problem, I ordered a spring kit from todd and I found the brown/orange spring worked best for me which you see in the last video, todd had the block off plate gasket and the top pc ready for me when I ordered it, told him how I wanted it he welded it got it ready and then sent it to me complete.

Few more upgrades,
Gen 4 diff, since my gen 3 stock diff is a ticking time bomb,
Dodge part number for bolts is 6502581
Dodge part number for strap clamps 4428723
thats all you need to do the install,
The car with the stock diff would brake the right side loose then the left rear tire, would happen so fast you had to be waiting for it to happen at wot,
now with the gen 4 diff it doesn't blow out side ways, the gen 4 diff makes the rear braking loose more controllable, the difference is in the gen 4 viscolok vs the gen 3 hydralok,
Other upgrades E-brake relocation kit, mickey thompson 345/35/18's on 18x13 ccw for the strip.

Great build and it's cool to see you going TT! Why not keep the paxton if your goals were around 1000rwhp?
