Cactus Walt was his racing name but went by Walter. He was a few weeks from being 13. He had been slowing down the last few weeks so I thought it was coming. Luckily I was able to spend a little extra time with him and made sure he knew he was loved. Woke up this morning at 4 and he was hardly able to stand up. He made it outside and laid down in one of the holes he had dug. I sat with him for about 45 minutes in 30 degree weather till I knew he has for sure leaving us. Wife gave him some meds to help. For the first time in his life he let me pick him up and put him in the truck for the ride to the vet. He passed on the ride while I was petting his head. He never looked like he was in pain and was having a normal day just yesterday. Glad it went quick for him. RIP big guy. 8072

Very, very sorry to hear of your loss. I will be a wreck when the time comes for my dogs. It takes my breath away even thinking about it.

Dogs spend their entire life just to make us happy. Hang in there....

That is sad. But I bet there is another greyhound that needs adopting that could help fill that void.

I am sorry for your loss - it's a huge hole to fill when our 4 legged furry friends leave but I agree with outnumbered - there's another greyhound in need of a home

A dog is not just an animal. It's a part of your family, your home, and your life. I know how terrible it hurts when you lose them. I hope you can remember though that it hurts because of all the wonderful joy that he brought into your life. I think it's ok to tell him thank you for all he did for you. I will have a drink to him and your special bond tonight.

God Bless

So sorry to hear it. Courtney and I just went through this in November with our boy Murphy. Take solace in the fact that he knew you were there for him 100% It's such a tough time but the clouds will lift and you'll remember all the earlier happier times soon enough.
We got a cat shortly before Murphy passed.. he is keeping us entertained but certainly no one can replace the dog.
thoughts go out to you~

Sorry to hear of your loss. Dogs can be real special. Read the poem "the Rainbow Bridge", it made me feel better after I cried most of the day when I was in your shoes. Good luck friend!

Very sorry to hear this. I lost two buddies last year myself (Peeka and Boo, mother and son Flame Point Siamese) and I still miss them.

They are certainly family, and you will see them again someday on the Rainbow Bridge

Thanks for all the kind words. Really made me feel better. You forget how much they are part of your day till they are no longer sitting there. I got a daughter on the way in a couple weeks. Wonder if the wife would let me incorporate Walter into a middle name somehow.

I've always wanted to get one of these dogs. They are rare and often a little socially awkward with other dogs but all around great pets. It sounds like you gave walt an awesome life and I'm sure he was happy that you were there for him in his last few peaceful moments. It sucks they don't live longer but 13 healthy years is a good number.

My thoughts go out to you. I'm choking up just thinking about losing our own dog.

I'm also proud to be a part of a group where there are
so many dog lovers who understand that they are a part of our families.
Good on you all!

Really sorry to hear this, I feel sorry for the people that will never know this kind of companionship from these animals. I've lost several and I have never gotten over one of them, RIP.

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master. May he be in your heart forever. I feel your loss and wish you comfort at a time of grief.

We will all be together once again soon enough.

sorry for your loss. Dogs are family. You have them as a pupy, see them grow up while developping a strong bond and when it is time they leave a big void. I lost my dog 2 years ago at the age of 16 and it still hurts.

Thanks again everyone. I am not saying it doesn't sting a little still but we all are doing good. Our other dog has not been eating much right now but she is also getting twice the scraps. Kinda sad story here though. I used to give the scraps to the greyhound in the dog bowl and let the other dog eat off the plate. Well now when I put the scraps in the dog bowl the other dog won't eat it. She knows that food was for Walter. Also greyhounds are known for having poor teeth health and Walter was no exception. He had many missing teeth in his later years. Well when he would drink water and eat half of it would go on the floor. So my house is a little cleaner now. Just getting used to our new life. No plans yet for a new pup but we have a away of finding stray dogs.

My Condolences. We lost a friend in our family here earlier this year. Her name was Jewels and she was a 14 year old Golden Retriever. Her mind was young but her body couldn't keep up anymore. It's good to know they lived long happy lives.
