Trying to decide the best place to mount an exterior GoPro Hero camera. This is where I would like to mount it but slightly concerned it may inhibit the air intake.

Also have a Hero4 that is smaller but plan to use it for interior video as it has better audio.

An alternative would be to put it here but don't like the vantage point as well.

Anyone have any insight?

Get the suction cup mount, its good to whatever speed you're likely to go and can be put anywhere on a relatively flat panel, including the hood. I always liked right above the windshield looking forward so you can see that long hood!

Thanks for the reply Steve! I have the suction cup mount but I'd heard that sometimes track management won't allow them to be used due to insurance concerns. Didn't want to count on being able to use it then find out when I get there they're not going to let me.

No problem! Makes sense, but I'd be worried about the adhesive mount coming off. I've found the suction cup to be much more reliable with staying on the car.
If I had to pick from the locations you show in your pictures, I'd pick the front bumper. Less of a chance of collateral damage to your paint and windshield in the that location.

That is a good point which I hadn't considered... I've used the adhesive mounts on previous cars at very high speeds but the camera was mounted in the front bumper area.

Read this thread :)

If you intend to use any camera mount on the outside of the car I would strongly suggest you use a secondary tether incase the mount fails.
I use clear sea fishing line which can be fed through window seals, grille vents etc and attached to a secure fixing. If you use a secondary fixing most tracks will be ok with it.
Now it depends what you want to film, If you mount the camera up front, you will not see anything of your car, mount the camera on the side or rear facing forward you will then get a bit of your car in which will make the video more enjoyable :)

i would NOT put the camera in front of the intake for sure. Down low also gives you a better image of where you are going. I put mine inside of the windshield far right with the optional swivel mount and suction cup. Many users stick them on the forward portion of the roof too.

Thanks for the input guys... guess I'll tinker around with the suction cup mount and see what gives the best view.

I usually run mine center mounted on the front edge of the roof. I run an external mic to different spots as well to pick up the sound I want.
Here's your view from the front (lower) bumper... you can actually see the location on my avatar pic. The sound is not good, but a remote mic setup could improve that by quite a bit.
The adhesive mount is rock-solid, and should be even better with the decreased weight of the newer GoPros...

Multiple cameras with one good sound source would be REALLY sweet...

The adhesive mount is very good and fatboy18 is totally right about the secondary tether if you have any concerns.
I have an adhesive mount in the windshield looking out - the perceived speed is less because you don't get to see the ground that blurs past, but the perspective is good for seeing it from the drivers seat. Good general rule - the closer to the ground you get the camera the faster the perceived speed will be in your shot.
I would also try inside the lower bumper directly in front of the driver like what you're seeing with rw99s footage. if you have a driver camera or over the shoulder camera to mix that with it would be sweet you'd get both perspectives. (mount second one on rear window inside facing front over your shoulder from passenger side) That one you can do with the suction cup on inside of the glass

Yep, that is exactly my plan :) Hoping to be able to edit the video as a PIP with the interior in the lower right corner but we'll see how that goes lol

Hmmm, might look into this. How do you run the external mic when the camera is inside the plastic case?
Update: Done the research on the external mic. Now purchasing the necessary case, cable and mic. Next question. Where is the best place to mount the mic? Getting a 20' extension cord so it can go pretty much anywhere lol.
