View Full Version : Speaker upgrade kit installed on my TA
V1PERMAN

I ordered the Mopar speaker upgrade kit online for about $500 which consisted of 6 additional speakers. One "center dash speaker" two "upper door speakers" and three additional "subwoofers" for behind the seats. The TA comes with a 12 speaker system and this kit supposedly adds the missing 6 speakers.
Well, as it turns out that is not the case........
First, I went to install the included "Center Dash Speaker and Grill". Well, to my surprise, it is already installed in the car and working from the factory.
Next, i installed the "Upper Door Speakers and Grills". I knew that I needed these as the TA comes with block-off filler plates where these speakers get installed. I followed the included instructions and they installed perfectly. To my surprise, they worked immediately without any additional programming which the instructions said you need to have done at the dealer.
Now, on to the sub's behind the seats. I removed the carpet behind the drivers seat and found one sub installed from the factory. I removed the other block-off plate and installed the missing drivers side sub. Next, I removed the carpet behind the passenger side seat and to my surprise there was one sub installed from the factory. So I installed the one missing sub and closed things up. Turned on the radio and the 2 additional subs that I installed DID NOT WORK. I guess that I need the dealer to do the software mod to get these going.
So in conclusion, of the additional 6 speakers I purchased in the $500 kit, I only needed to use 4 of the speakers. But what really amazes me is that the viper is marketed as a "12" or "18" speaker system.
That is NOT the case.
The "18" speaker system actually only uses "13" physical speakers and the "12" speaker system actually uses "9" physical speakers.
The reason being is that the "center dash speaker", the 2 "upper door speakers" and the 2 "rear hatch speakers" and called "Unity Speakers" and are thus 2-way drivers and each single physical speaker actually counts as 2 speakers.
Check out the diagram below I was able to find on the Harman Kardon website.

While I'm glad that I now have all the speakers that the Viper was designed to have, I feel a little misled in SRT's marketing of their audio systems.

Excellent information! Let us know how the software upgrade goes at the dealer to get the two additional subwoofers working and then what you think about how it sounds vs the stock TA system. It seems, to me, that those 4 speakers you installed are exactly what's missing. It bugs me seeing the block off plates in the doors so I want those speakers and then a little extra low end from the two additional subs would be great.

Interesting info. Thanks for sharing! Would be nice to just be able to purchase the pair of door speakers separate, and the subs individually.

This is too funny, I was about to start another thread. I just did the same thing but I am having some issues with my dealer upgrading the software.
They claimed that they have upgraded the software and I now see the surround option on the head unit but the additional subwoofers are still not working. I upgraded from the 9 speaker option, not sure if that makes any difference.
Dealer had tried twice now and no success. I am thinking about taking it to another dealer at this point.
Can you please check the model # of the amp in the trunk please? I'd like to make sure that they are all the same amplifiers.

Great information. Something I was interested in doing, but was side tracked. Hope the extra sub works out. Do you recall during the sub installation whether the rear of the subs are enclosed? It's been a while since I last checked from underneath the car.

In your opinion, does the 18 sound that much better than the 12?

I had a Harmon Kardon system in one of my older cars and had nothing but trouble with them. Sound quality was always poor no matter what speakers I upgraded to. It's too bad Dodge didn't go with at least a BOSE system. I don't think you'll ever get the Harmon Kardon system to sound that great. But on the other hand, when I'm in my Viper, I hear very little of it!

I had the 9 speaker system in my 13 & the 18 speaker system now in my 14. The sound difference is night & day. I officially endorse the 18 speaker system for what it's worth...:)

Sit in a car with the 19 speaker HK from factory and you will change your mind.
All 4 of my BMW's had the HK system in them, and they all sounded great. Definitely never heard of anyone having issues with a factory HK system until now.
BOSE is junk. It is always Chevy's system, so we will never see that in a Dodge I doubt.

Bose is absolute garbage in the automotive arena. Only barely acceptable (but well marketed) in the home arena. The Corvette Bose systems have been garbage for years, worst system I ever had from GM. Even my 1998-2002 Camaro/Firebird crap systems sounded better than my C6 Corvette systems. LOL

I had the 9 in the '13, and now 12 in the '14. Barely any difference, but I rarely have the radio turned up. The system in my new Dodge Ram sounds great, however.

the 19 speaker was an upgrade. The 19th speaker is a real subwoofer, not just a midbass. According to the engineer that was demonstrating it for me anyway.

You're the first person I've heard say there's a 19th speaker option for the Viper. I've always heard 9 (for the base 13s), 12 (option in 13, standard in 14), or 18.
The 9 speaker system is poop, I can hear all three speakers that were added to the 12 - the center speaker and 2 subs.

Beats me. Maybe the guy just misspoke thinking the system had same number of speakers as the Cherokee? But then I see a few cars listed as having 19 speakers, are those mistypes as well?
If the 18 speaker is the top end option for stereo then that is great. Because I see that listed fairly often. I guess I will find out once I can go down and order a 2015 though :drive:

While I'm glad that I now have all the speakers that the Viper was designed to have, I feel a little misled in SRT's marketing of their audio systems.
Nothing misled. All auto manufacturers count each driver as a "speaker". Due to packaging constraints in a vehicle, putting a tweeter on top of a mid-range driver in the same housing is in fact two speakers.

Oh jeez, Harmon Kardon is regarded way better than Bose. Bose is highly over-rated. The 19-speaker HK speaker system in my Summit Grand Cherokee sounds amazing.

I will say that I have owned many different cars but the HK system in my GTS is the best sounding factory system I have heard, especially when you factor in the tight space of the car itself.
Bought a new Dodge Dart also as my daily runner and I gutted that sound system as it was beyond horrific.

I had this done on my TA by Roanoke and I'm certain it's working. Base hits so much harder than before I can feel it in my back. Combined with the additional door tweeters I now have to turn the music down if I want to hear the exhaust.

I thought the 18 speaker factory system has different amps altogether? Isn't it more than just the speaker count? The $5XX system gets you the speakers, car is already pre-wired but it does not have those high end amps in the 12 speaker system. 9 speaker was an anomaly and should never have ben offered. 3 speaker system should have just not even come with speakers it is that bad.

Makes sense that the factory upgrade would be amp and speakers. The kit in this thread is just the speakers.
Yeah a quick Google search shows the difference is more than this speaker package guys... Your amps are different. HK 18 speaker system uses a 32v amplifier vs whatever the hell the stock system would be. Never seen a system rated by voltage before unless it's pre outs.

So I should have my dealer do the software steps again? The surround sound option showed up once they did it the first time so I thought they were successful. I guess I will ask them to go back through the steps in hopes that they get it right this time.

If you have a 12 speaker system in the car, that amplifier is already set up for the extra "subs", I checked my amplifier, and the wires for the additional "subs" are there and connected, as well as at the speaker locations. I also have the wiring pin-out in the garage somewhere. I bought the speaker kit, plugged in the door tweeters, and they started working right away.
I didn't bother to get the "subs" turned on, as I installed a real JL 10" sub in the side cubby of the rear hatch.
By the way, what they call "subs" are extra 6X9's behind the seats.....

Well to be honest, if they're only producing low frequencies, the added surface area is more beneficial than the loss of accuracy, but I'm used to subs being, well, subs, not large speakers. But they do work.

Brad,
Here's what I found as I am kicking around adding this to my car. Factory upgrade from 13 speaker to 18 speaker 800w system is $1850 CDN. This includes updated amplifier and more speakers.
The speaker kit for $585 USD is the speaker portion of the upgrade kit.
So when I asked "how come the factory upgrade is 3 times the cost of the added speakers" it was then found that the amplifiers are different and put out more boom-boom.
Having said that, I'm still on the fence with the 18 speaker- amp upgrade. All I listen to is AM630...

Well Im no expert, and only know that the speaker kit will work with the installed amplifier. I also know the same has worked for others, and the amplifier will play them. I dont know if there's an upgraded amplifier available.
I could guess the 1800 dollar upcharge could be the Porsche style, get their margins in the options trick...... or they could really change the amplifier. I dont know.
A quick check could be to call the dealer for a replacement amp using a 12 speaker cars VIN, then look for an amp using an 18 speaker cars VIN
By the way, the only reason I even added the 18 speaker upgrade kit to my 12 speaker was because as soon as I realized there were blank plates in the doors where speakers should be, the plates annoyed me. Lol

Well if the amps are all the same, voltages are all the same and it is just the extra speakers and a dealer reflash to get to 18 from the base system, sure seems excessive to pick up the factory 18 speaker option at that cost when you can save $1,400 bucks by ordering the speakers afterwards. There has to be more to it than that. If not, there is almost a case to just have 18 speaker system as base system and no stereo options. Why piss around with it, unless they figure most won't care to pay more money for nothing but an install.

I had another dealer go through the same steps all over again and the 2 new rear subs are still not working. This isn't a software issue, there is something else at play here. I am suspecting the amplifier as of this point. It is one of the listed part numbers of applicable amps posted on page 2, but it has to stem from that as I watched the dealer perform the steps. I have also verified that the subs are 100% connect correctly(plugged in with a click).

^ As I have stated numerous times across many threads, yet my posts seem to get ignored. The 2 additional subs will not work through the software update at the dealer the way the instructions dictate. Hopefully we can figure out how to get them going as I feel like the added base would balance out the system.

I have not installed this yet on my 2015 TA2.0 with the 12 speaker option but some that have it has worked as the instructions say. I'm trying to get amp and configuration info from them as well.
My theory is this was a upgrade from the 9 speaker to 18 speaker system, basically for 2013 cars. It may be possible that in 2013 it was just a software flash and adding these extra speakers but in 2014 when they went to 12 speaker systems they enabled the full 18 speaker flash across the board (hence the reason why the door tweeters work immediately) but installed a jumper of some sort for the added rear base speakers, much like they did on the ACR.

I had this done on my TA by Roanoke and I'm certain it's working. Base hits so much harder than before I can feel it in my back. Combined with the additional door tweeters I now have to turn the music down if I want to hear the exhaust.
One note - 95% of what I listen to is from my iPhone via USB. Radio itself is weaker and I didn't renew Sirius when it expired.
Could you verify your amp part number? I wonder if Roanoke replaced your amp as well as installed the added speakers is what I'm getting at. Would you review your invoice amount and tell us cost and amp part number please?
Also I assume you did this to a 2014 TA?

On the ACR speaker upgrade thread I saw where there is a jumper wire under the dash keeping all the speakers from playing but it also fried a radio of someones.
I do not think the GT, SRT or TA has this jumper wire. Thanks for posting amp info though. I am almost certain all Logic 7 stamped amps are 18 speaker capable.

Now I just need a '14 or 15' GTS with the 18 speaker system to chime in and we can compare part numbers. I have a feeling it is the exact same number.
Bringing this thread back from the dead since I just bought a 14 TA and it could really use some better sound. Do we have a definitive answer on what needs to be purchased and how to get it to work together for the TA?
Also - did y'all see this thread for the ACR on the same subject?

pm 2doorrocket, he may be able to help, the issue is the original sales code in the ECM/BCM overrides any attempts to change the factory installed stereo. supposedly this has been fix though. either way, it requires a trip to the dealer to fully activate the system and update both the sales code and eq curve to activate the additional subs

I went from the stock 3 speaker to 18. I think what you need are the 2 rear unity speakers and 2 subs to go from 12 to 18. Then of course you need the dealer to add the RCA code.

No, What You Will Need Is The 2 Rear Subs Behind The Seats, And The 2 Coaxiels On The Upper Doors , The 12 System Has The Rear Speakers, Remember That They Count A Coaxiel Speaker As 2 Speakers, What A Rip, But Thats The 18 Speaker Set Up.

Just upgraded the stereo to 18 speaker system in my TA, and it went flawlessly. Installed the 4 speakers myself (dash speaker is exactly the same so don't waist your time checking it b/c it's a pain in the access); I had Red Bluff Dodge use the scan tool to restore the vehicle configuration to activate it when it was in for the recalls. The upgrade kit comes with specific instructions that require the dealer to help you. It is a night and day difference. The sound is amazing. Easily the best $500 stereo upgrade I have ever spent. Highly recommended.

Gotcha. I couldn't remember which two unity speakers were missing on the 12. I knew it needed 2 subs though.

Hi! Thanks for posting this. I have a TA too and can't wait to get my audio upgraded. I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy the kit or if it makes sense to buy just the four speakers you mentioned you used. (Did you happen to verify the part #s before you installed them? I believe they are 05035253AB for the bulkhead "subs" and 05035308AB for the upper door unity speakers.)
Also - did you need anything else from the kit other than the four speakers and the directions? Did you need to purchase anything outside of the kit (I read on this site (http://www.billswebspace.com/viper.html) that you need the 05035339AA buckets for under the "subs" and that these baffles are not included in the kit..?)
Finally - could you please post a picture of the instructions that came with this kit?
Thanks!

The kit is all my dealer needed when they did the install. I too read about those speaker 'cups' in another thread and my dealer didn't mention them. I wonder if that's only an issue with the 3 speaker ACR system? And I think someone priced out the speakers separately and it was more expensive than doing the full kit and keeping the extra center speaker as a spare.
I was reminded last Thursday driving the car just how much this kit improved the 12 speaker system. I use my iPhone via USB (not Bluetooth) and the base hits so hard you can feel it in your back. Combined with much improved highs from the new door tweeters this is by far the best sounding system I've had in any car. It's at the point now where it will mask exhaust noise, which is both good and bad.
By far the best bang for the buck mod I've done on my Viper!

I think I may have been the one that priced it all out. Although it was in CDN funds, the 2 door speakers, the 2 door grilles, and the 2 subs were more expensive to buy separately than the kit. The kit doesn't include the buckets however.

05035254AA door woofers x2 (included in kit)
05035308AB uppper door unity speakers x2 (included in kit)
(part # unknown) grilles for upper door unity speakers x2 (included in kit)
Also.. optionally I've read you can get these: 05035339AA woofer buckets x 2 (NOT included in kit)..
I got tired of waiting.. since everybody's having good luck with the kit, I just ordered a kit as well as the two woofer buckets.

Sorry for the delay in posting but I got my car back going on two weeks ago and it worked without issue. The new subs are firing and the new door speakers are working. I effectively have a 18 speaker Harmon Kardon system in a TA2.0 now. Is it out of this world awesome and a must do for anyone without it, NO. Is it a good upgrade for relatively low cost that makes the car more enjoyable, YES. Caution when they flash the BCM to have them go over all functions, found when they flashed mine it shut off the Daytime running lights code in the BCM, had to go back in later and turn it back on. Yes the base does kick you in the back now, the highs are louder and crisper, it is a better system with the more speakers. It is not Bang & Olufsen quality or even as good as my 2016 Ram Limited, but it is much improved and recommended.
For those that asked, YES you need the speaker buckets. Most buckets are for sound, these are to close up the holes in your car. When you remove the plate to add the speaker you will be looking at the ground, the bucket plugs the hole, the speaker fills it. If you are thinking like me, you are correct, if a rock flies off your tire it can crack the bucket or plate leading to a nice leak when driving in rain. I bought extra buckets...
Overall glad I did the upgrade, it does sound better, it also looks a thousand times better with the grills in the door. WIth my heads and cam package, headers, cat delete, and corsa... you can hear some music now and feel some bass. If you are looking for an outstanding audiophile system this isn't for you, go to a sound shop and get some Focal separates, amps and a good sub and spend $5-$10K.
For the money this audio upgrade can not be beat, and now knowing I can buy the upgrade kit, I'll never spend the $2k for the option when I order a 2017....

Has anyone other than 1.8t had issues with the upgrade going from 12 to 18 speakers? Myself and many others have had success so while I don't want to diminish his issue and the need for resolution it feels like that's an outlier and for everyone else it's fine. IMO if you have the 12 speaker system today and want better sound the kit is a must.

Andy - thanks. Any update?
Hi everybody - I just got the upgrade kit and the buckets. Couple questions for those that have done this upgrade on a TA:
- are we confirmed that all the TA's already have the center dash speaker so we can skip that part?
- is there an "easy" way to pull out the false grill by the door pull to check if there is already as speaker there, and if so, just pop in the new grill? (I recall somebody in this thread said their car already had a speaker in one door.. I'd prefer not to pull the whole door panel off if I don't have to).
- any tips and tricks for removing the door panel to actually install that speaker, without damaging the clips or causing new rattles?
- any other tips or tricks, for installing the back speakers or otherwise?
Thanks!

Hey Andi, I Did My TA And Now My ACR, The Center Dash Speaker Is There, So You Can Skip That Part. Just Follow The Instruction Sheet , And TAKE YOUR TIME !!, I've Done This 4 Times Before , Door Panel Will Require Some Muscle To Pop Off , You Got 2 Bolts First To Remove ,2015's And 16's Have 3 Bolts To Remove,Then Unsnap The Door Panel. The Rears Are Easy ,Pull The Carpeted Panel, And It's Right There To Do. I Hope This Helps.

1Koolasp - when you did your TA did you purchase speaker cups for the ones behind the seat you installed? Or did everything you need come in the one kit? I ask because I had my dealer install mine and they only used the kit so I'm wondering if the backs of those behind-the-seat speakers are now exposed to the elements in error...
I just bought the kit and can confirm the buckets are not included in it.

Andi,
Unfortunately there is not an easy way since the upper speaker grill has tabs holding it to the door panel, the panel has to be removed (I did have the upper speaker installed on one side with the blank in the door panel, probably a fluke at the factory). I just removed the required screws and used a trim removal tool to work my way around the door, no issues breaking clips but there is always that possibility. For the rears I did not have to remove the trim, the carpet can be maneuvered out of the way pretty easily by untucking it and sliding it out of the way. Have a few pics on my website that may help. VERY worthwhile upgrade, maybe the best OE stereo I have had.

No Speaker Cups For Me , I Bought A 6x9 Soft Baffle ,And Put Those In As The Buckets , $8 Bux At Amazon, Worked Awesome And ,On The 16's You Get No Buckets , I Popped Out The Stock Rear Speaker ,And There Was No Bucket, Just The Same Type Baffle Material, That"s What They Now Use, Must Be Cheaper For Them To Do So. Also No Buckets With The Kit , There Like $50 Bucks Or So, No Need, 6x9 Soft Baffle , They Are Made By Dynamat, Done !!
Interesting, I started down this path too and purchased the foam baffles from Amazon but thought I would keep everything OE with the buckets- They are a bit pricey for what they are.

Bottom of page 9.
It's a two-step process. First somebody with the right access rights (at my dealer it was the business development manager) has to go into dealerconnect and add sales code RCA as a dealer installed option for your VIN. Then, after they've confirmed the sales code has been added to your vin, the tech can connect to your car and do a "restore vehicle configuration."
Basically what they're doing is doing a flash update of your car. The first step tells Chrysler to create a flash update file for your car that turns on those other previously unused channels on your amplifier (i.e. to get the new subs to fire). So they prepare the new file. Then the tech downloads the new file and flash updates your car.
I actually took the rear bulkhead carpet out after the update, bumped some hip hop, and shined my phone flashlight on each visible woofer to make sure it worked this time before leaving. It's easy to seem them moving with the right music.
Hope this helps.

This is all you need. (Part Number 82213535. Simple to install, then head to the dealer to reflash the system. Sounds amazing.
Just to close the loop, here is what you need for the upgrade:
- One speaker upgrade kit 82213535
- [optional] Two buckets for the rear woofers. 2 x 05035339AA. Some folks skipped this and there is talk of SRT no longer using the buckets at all on the 15+'s. Dono. I bought the buckets and installed them under the speakers.
Note that the speaker upgrade kit contains more than you actually need (it has an extra 3rd sub you don't need and an extra center dash speaker that you also don't need because it's already installed in the car (according to people on the forum; I didn't personally check)). *BUT* the speaker upgrade kit is the only way to get the door tweeter grilles unless somebody finds the individual part # (I couldn't).
Here are the official install instructions:

Here is a little tid bit of advice for those of you out there using your phone etc. as your source for the tunes. A couple of days ago I was out with my son, and I noticed that my stereo system sounded "tinny". That is, the base response was crap. I have the full "18" speaker system in my GTS, and I distinctly remember it sounding much better before. At first I thought that my sub wasn't functioning correctly. I went into the equalizer settings on the audio page and maxed out the bass to no effect. I moved the fade back and forth from the front to the back with no effect. Well, no surprise here, it was operator error. I discovered that somehow my phone had been set to the "Classic" setting in its equalizer settings. I changed it to "Rock" and holy crap, my system was back baby!!!! So, the moral of the story is, make sure the source device is set up properly before you even start to mess with the equalizer settings in the car. I had to go back and reduce the bass, mid, and treble, because it was totally out of control after I got the phone setting right. I hope this helps ;)

Using Bluetooth to stream music from your phone to the sound system wirelessly is by far the weakest way.
Huge difference by using either USB cable or the SD disk.

That's a Monster of a tip Monster. What type of phone do you have? I'm not aware of this type of setting on an Iphone.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 I believe. You can go into the "settings" if you press the left touch button on the bottom of the phone when in the music app. The music app has a green musical note surrounded by a blue circle. Once in settings you select "SoundAlive" which has a bunch of "stock equalizer" settings such as Rock, Pop, Dance, Classic, Jazz, etc. The "Rock" setting I find to be the best. I know people have said that using the Bluetooth to stream music is not as good as a USB cable etc., but I have tried both, and there is no perceptible difference. Again, this may have a lot to do with the type of phone I'm using, the music program, the quality of my mp3's etc. etc. etc.............. There are tons of variables. The bottom line: my system sounds awesome when streaming from Bluetooth. I just need to make sure I have it on the right setting on the phone.
Edit - I would suspect that every phone/ipod etc. has the ability to change the equalizer settings. In my experience, this is absolutely vital in getting the most out of your sound system. It's not like the old days, when the only thing you had to change were the settings on the actual head unit. Now you have to make sure the settings on your source device are set properly first, then adjust your head unit accordingly ;)

Another VOA thread to the rescue! Did this upgrade without incident. The door panels were the only somewhat intimidating part of the install. Dealer flashed without incident. HOLY COW! The sound upgrade is ridic! Did not use speaker buckets behind the rear speakers, do not care as it is rumored the factory no longer uses them. Thanks for the advice guys!
I had heard they were using the foam baffles in place of the old buckets......without one of these your speaker is exposed to the elements and might also test how well it works in a large infinite baffle scenario.
I do agree, sound is MUCH improved, worth the $$$.
[EDIT] I did see the post/pics you were referring to with no buckets, just WOW. I would still use them.

I miss the 18 speakers from my GT. I'll want to make the upgrade again in my TA. Another tip if your bass is low, just mute and Unmute the volume. It's something with the firmware. I had to do it almost each time I turned on the radio. It's much more noticeable with bass heavy music like rap or you may not even know it's not working to the full potential.

Thanks for this thread! I ordered everything the OP noted last week, and it came in yesterday. Very easy install; although I feel certain I broke some of the clips. However, I don't here any rattles. Now, I just need to go to the dealer to the get the subs working.

Wanting to do this upgrade, but after reading this thread for the past hour I’m still confused LOL...
I have a 2013 GTS, so I assume I have the “12 speaker kit”? My questions...
•Does the 2013 need the center dash speaker installed?
•Do the 13s have speaker buckets already installed behind my seats?
•Have people successfully had the 2013s converted to the full 18 speaker setup? (Basically, gotten all the 6x9s to work)

Should all GTS’s have the 18 Spkr HK setup? Check and see if you’ve got the upper door speakers.

There’s a grill there, but no speakers in them

Weird...my 2015GT had the 12 speaker system,
And the upper door location had a plastic plate covering the spot where the speaker and grill goes

I started a thread on this...pretty straight forward with all the part#'s needed.

Polo 708, I have a 2013 GTS that was purchased new with the 12 speakers system and have done the 18 speaker change over.
The 2013 does not need the dash speaker its already there.
13s do not have the 6x9 speaker buckets installed from factory.
to get the additional 6x9 to work you must have the dealer enable them.
Follow the parts list from gen5snake post and you will be fine. If you already have the upper door grills installed from factory that helps with whats needed and is most likely some sort of mixup from manufacturing. There was a post a while back of one car that had a speaker under the dummy plate on the passenger side however the driver side had the dummy plate and no speaker.
Good luck with your project it really does make a difference with windows up and at slower speeds.

Will do, thanks...
So all the wires are just sitting there? Do they just clip in and are ready to go? (Minus the “subs” that need the radio update)

All the wires and connectors are there. They were all taped up and pulled back/hidden on my car. You'll need to to some digging, but they are all there. They used the same harness for these cars.
In my thread, I linked to this site which shows a nice "how to" http://www.billswebspace.com/viper.html. Bill shows a taped up connector.
