View Full Version : Secondary fan not coming on!

Stupid me, I had a home service waxing specialist come over and detail my car. Forgot to tell him to keep his hands off my engine bay. He used a cleaning spray agent and I think that has caused an electrical issue with my fan relay.
I had the fan control module installed which activated my secondary fan at 190F and stays on after engine shut off for about 2 minutes. Was very pleased.
But now, the secondary fan won't come on and my engine overheats when idle or in traffic obviously. What could be wrong?
Here's a video.

OK, Some questions first.
1/ When was the engine coolant last changed? and have you checked the coolant level?
2/ Go for the simple things first, have you checked the Secondary Fan fuse?
I would also presume this secondary fan has a relay positioned somewhere? Have you checked that?
3/ Do you know what Temp thermostat you are running?
I do not have a secondary fan on my Gen II Viper, but I had a melted fuse relay which caused an issue on my car, I replaced the relay and it improved things.
You may have a relay problem?

Why not check the fuse and change the relay....I havent had to buy one but the fuel pump relays are 10-12 bucks. A pretty cheap test.

1. The AC on should force the fan onto high speed. I used to cool my engine after a track event this way. It would also diagnose if the fan ran at all.
2. You turned temp to high and then fan position to vent. The simple HVAC system doesn't blow air through the heater core in this setting, if the air is warm it is only because the intake box is warmed from under hood air. To blow across the core you need to choose a fan setting to the right (heat at feet, defrost + heat, or defrost). Vent and AC bypass the core.
3. Can you go back to OEM and Uninstall the run-on fan?

Just to add to what Tom said, Those 3 Vents above the radio are for Venting Fresh Air (Not heat) Heat should only come from the windscreen vents or the footwell vents.
Turn on your right hand dial to the A/C * position and see if the factory fan comes on. If is does not come on you have a electrical problem which will most likely be a relay (or wires / wire terminals that relay plugs into).

Thanks guys...
Checked the fuse, relay and secondary fan wire. Turns out the fan relay cable melted due to bad soldering.
I installed an upgraded wire and replaced the fuse just be sure.
Secondary fan works now. Let's see how things go from here.
Thanks guys.

There are threads on the "Other site" about melted wires that the relay plugs into, tipe in "Melted Fan Relay" in the search bar to see results.

Glad to see you found the issue...
One comment though.... if the detailer did the engine bay because you forgot to tell him to leave it alone.... change detailers... :D .... that engine bay looks pretty dirty for having been cleaned...
just harrassing ya... :D

Just curious, why would you need a secondary fan. I have a 98 GEN II and It runs idling at 190 - 200 or so. On a hot day runs a little higher. What happened that caused you to need a second fan

Nothing, my Viper is a 93 model. It came standard with two fans.

Understand what you are saying now, yes the 1993 cars came with Dual fans, Crackling and myself thought you had an aftermarket additional fan Added.
What lead us to think this is the Thermostat probe attached by nylock cables to the radiator, that is Not standard. Why was this done, did you have a problem with the old one?

So you post your question in a forum for 1992 through 2002 cars?

Are you the original owner?
Have you or a previous owner had PCM reprogrammed...and, if so...were fan run parameters changed?
Do both fans turn on with A/C on?
Have you tried to interrogate the PCM?
Does your Viper have the original engine?
Have you thought of visiting a CJDR dealer for analysis with wiTECH?
I agree with Dave...you will get better answers more quickly by posting your questions in the Gen V section.
Best of luck to you !

The low and low fan relay is done for. I just changed my two fan relays last week on my 1994! See pics for help. Easy job that now you have the part numbers and location! Took me a few days to figure it out:dude3:
