I have a gen3, i was able to get into reverse and i backed up. Then i tried to get into reverse and now i am unable to. I pulled the solenoid out and ran 12v to it and i can push it down just fine. i have no check engine lights. I put a test light on the plug and it lighted up just fine. So im getting power to the plug and the solenoid is working. If i removed the solenoid i should be able to get into reverse just fine correct? Because with the solenoid removed i am still unable to get into reverse. I have a MGW short shifter as well. Am i missing something or is my reverse totally shot?
I couldn't get into reverse (intermittently) and found it was a broken motor mount. My shifter moved to the right, so I couldn't get into reverse. Hope this helps.

i am able to push it pass the reverse lock out smoothly, but when i try to put in, it feels like gate is blocked. i dont see anything blocking the shifter from going into reverse

How long has the shifter been in the car? I would check to see if the plastic cup on the bottom ball of the shifter has somehow gotten out of place or is possibly broken. I don't actually know if that could cause your issue. Just thinking of a possible "wear" or mis-installed item.

While it is out, see if you can shift the transmission into reverse by using a screw driver or something on the appropriate shift rod.

It's a single linkage for the shifter. Only way to do what you are suggesting is to split the case.
If you are not seeing anything obvious with the shifter out, and have tried the factory one to eliminate the after market one being the issue you are going to have to split the case to find out what's wrong.

oops. Brain fart ! I had a picture in my head of troubleshooting a similar issue on a different car. It's been a long time since I installed the shifter in my Viper.

By chance you didn't recently install a skip shift eliminator did you? One of our local guys had this same issue and we discovered he accidently installed the skip shift onto the plug for the reverse solenoid.

Happened to me yesterday in my V. I pushed the clutch in, and rowed each gear from first through sixth and then it allowed me into reverse. Weird.

I've always had to do 1st->2nd-> reverse in my Gen 3 if I want it to go in smooth.

I do have a skip shift installed but that was done in Jan of this year. I got back into it today and now i am able to get into reverse ? so i know know wtf happen. Maybe the viper angels came and fixed it over night. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.
