View Full Version : The first TT Gen V race you've ever seen...

A little background on what you're about to see:
I haven't been beating on the car for the last couple of weeks because we finally got a clutch in Big Red (that's the car's name). The Bad Boyz Garage Forced Induction Triple is just what the Dr. ordered - I wanted to break it in properly so I have a long healthy life out of this clutch... It's got about 400 easy miles on it now and hooking GREAT! So it was time to call out the Fastest Street Mustang in all of South Florida. That's the mustang in this video. It runs 8.90s @160 pretty consistently. It's as bad as bad can be.
About the runs:
Run 1 I was at 11 psi (it was a loss) and starting out in 3rd gear- just starting out at a low (1000 rwhp) power level to make sure I didn't spin out and land in a ditch...
run 2 I was at 11 psi (it was a loss also) again just feeling the car out and starting out in 4th. Again, going easy learning how she does on these tires and this clutch - hoping not to end up in a ditch (as most of you reading this know, these cars have a real propensity to go end over end)
Run 3 was not a race as I did not chase- I had turned up the boost to 14 PSI but let out before blast off because i needed to turn on another fuel pump before I was comfortable making another hit at this (Added) power level. No one wants to cook a $25K engine over a silly race for fun.
Run 4 was the same 3 PSI increase from above (total of 14 PSI) starting and ending in 4th gear and a big WIN.
Run 5 wasn't shown because the 'stang blew up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhj6PlUtWfc
Couple of observations from the data log of the pulls:
The ramp rate (for spool up) was turned all the way down (from daily driving to break the clutch in) so my power was coming on way late.
Timing was turned WAY down because I had been running pump gas (instead of E85) while breaking in the new clutch..
Ran out of wastegate springs at 14 PSI - I couldn't get any more boost out of her that last time I turned her up because I tried another hit on the way home to see what 18 PSI would feel like. To no avail... Those little springs just wouldn't give me more boost! I will be putting the proper springs in tomorrow so I can run her on up to 20-21 PSI.
I really hate to sell this car - it's the ultimate package! I might just have to keep it! Everyone needs two TT Gen V's, right!? (right guys?? RIGHT??)
(these runs were made on a closed section of the 'Ring in Germany so all local and applicable laws were obeyed)

Love it, but you already knew that :D I hope people understand that this is on the stock internals. Ed what would you say is the most you have safely made on the factory bottom end?

Flatout, 1,213 RWHP. This was actually by mistake when I was doing some tuning at lower boost levels and the boost controller had an issue unbeknownst to me - it surged to 19 PSI. I thought for sure it would bend a rod at those pressure levels... NOPE.. NOT ON E85! Checked her out entirely and immediately after that dyno pull.. No detonation whatsoever in the logs, all cylinders still reaching TDC, no metal in oil, perfect compression across all 10 and zero blow-by (no oil n the catch can), spark plugs still looked new and I even scoped the bores and valves - all as good as new... This is a BEAST of a motor. 700 miles later and she's still running like new.
I have a new billet set up just about ready to go so I'd like to let the nuts hang out on this setup- I'll probably end up cranking it on up beyond this power level a little later in winter when the air is even cooler.

Edward,
Come see me about getting some real tire under that car, or your next car. We can do some 18" Mickey Thompsons so you can just floor it from 60 and not have to lift at all. Just safer, all around. Glad to see a TT Viper actually being raced.

Tony,
Thank you! (it was floored the entire time in all but the first races. The car dead hooks on those NT05Rs once they are warm)
I like this setup because it still handles 98% as good as stock in the turns and she has traction for miles once the tires are warm.

Good to hear you were at least on a drag radial. NT05R's were good for about 650 ft-lbs at 60 mph, for me. The M/T's are good for 800 ft-lbs at 60 mph. Not peak torque values, just depends on what rpm/gear you start at.

I couldn't figure out why the Mustang was getting out so far on the hit until Ed mentioned he was making pulls in 4th. I would love to see what this car could do leaving in 2nd on a real tire.

Was that an RSI car? Wait that was Nasty GTS's car I think. I think Edwards car is the only one that has really worked correctly and consistantly.

With the MT Dr don't you think they will give you a better 60 because of the larger side wall. They are close to the same ht.

Jack,
For the strip, the MTs would probably work better for the reason you mentioned. However, this car is setup for the mile when sidewall height is more of a detriment for me.

Correct, this car was not successful. You are referring to James' (NastyGTS) car. It is currently being completely reworked -and hopefully done right this time.

I hate how the forgiving nature (or Stockholm syndrome) of exotic owners makes this kind of thing common among tuning shops. You'd think among exotic owners, there's be enough CEOs or business people to know better how to deal with extortionist thugs. Bad car tuners are allowed by exotic owners to function with both professional and work ethics that are absolutely like no other business on earth.
"We know we said it'd be ready in two months, but now it's going to be nine. Or 24. Or never. And you have no legal recourse except to take home your broken car that we sold most of the internals out of, at your own expense."
"We know we said it would cost $40K, but it's actually going to cost $150k. And we already did it and now you owe us."
"We accidentally damaged your fender. We repainted it, and now it doesn't match exactly. We know your car was brand new and immaculate, but we won't repaint the rest of the car or compensate you in any way because we fixed it to our satisfaction."
"Our bead breaker just wrecked your tire. I know you had P-Zero Corsas, but our shop policy is to only replace with our in-house Sumitmos. If you don't like it, just pay the difference and we'll replace it with a Corsa. Also, you'll need to pay out of pocket for the other side's Corsa or risk dying in a crash from uneven tread wear, but we don't care about that, either, lol."
I know a lot of regulars here own tuning shops, and to be clear, I absolutely don't mean to piss on you honest guys, but seriously, if a contractor or a doctor or a landscaper tried stuff even vaguely analogous to what RSI, Hennessy, etc. have gotten away with in the past, they'd straight up be in federal prison.

If i remember correctly Nastygts was warned by more than a few to stay away from RSI. He was conned in to thinking he would be different. It sucks that he got burned too. Hopefully nobody from here ever gets screwed again by theses idiots but just wait. We will be reading about it again soon enough.

Who else is doing a twin turbo setup in the United States? Would love to do this or a supercharger but really don't trust who is out there for these types of setups. Hennessey? meh? RSI? meh? Doesn't seem like we have anybody to go to for this particular application...

There's a shop in Texas (Calvo Motorsports) that is working on a production TT setup for gen V's. They have a TA shop car as well.

There are many aspects of this build coming together from multiple fronts based on what I have assembled within my head. It should be fun regardless.

Here's another little race vs. a car that traps 140 MPH - built cobra with a 150 shot... I told him to take the hit so when he takes off I just roll into it in 4th (we hit it at about 60-65 MPH):
