Although not close to home, without a doubt I call Buttonwillow my home track. This is the track I've spent the most time on. It took me many visits to figure out this technical track. Earlier in the year, Jonathan "Redsled" Martinez was there and offered to coach me. Although I had thought I knew the track beforehand, Jonathan coached me on how to negotiate every corner, bump, which curbing to hit, which to avoid. It was the most beneficial instruction I have ever had. If you buy a T-shirt at Buttonwillow and it has a Gen II GTS-R on it, that's Jonathan's. That ought to give you an idea of his skill level. Since then, I tracked my modded Camaro with a best of 1:57.4, a respectable time on this track and much faster than my Viper's previous 2:01 best.

My goal at this event was to beat my modded Camaro's lap time with my stock Viper. However this time I equipped my snake with equal tires, super-grippy Hoosier A6s. I used 345s in the rear and super-wide 315s on the front, which was a fantastic combo on the previous weekend at Sonoma. This time I had no way to get my Forgeline track wheels to the track, so I had the track shop mount the A6s to my stock wheels. The 315s barely fit on the 10.5" wide fronts, but soon I was to discover how well they would hook up. While turn-in is not as crisp as with my 11" wide Forgelines, these 315s eliminate any hint of understeer at the limit and give you an extremely balanced snake. Other than the Hoosiers, TA track alignment and Motul 600 brake fluid, my Viper is stock down to the brake pads. Time to play!

Saturday
A bunch of fellow Viper owners were there including my friends Lee in his black Gen III, Mike in his Gen IV ACR, Mark in his TA, and Steve in his Comp Coupe. When we hit the track, I ended up running competitive times with a modded M3 and an Ariel Atom. We were all within a second of each other and took turns dive-bombing each other for position. It was an absolute blast. By the end of Saturday, I was able to just edge both of them and set my new personal best of 1:54.14. Now I can stop getting teased by my friends for letting my Camaro beat my Viper, haha. However, the weekend was only half over and more adventures were ahead...

Sunday - Here come the Corvettes
Also noteworthy were two new highly modded Corvettes- one a 2,400 Lb C6 full race car with huge aero. The other was a freshly-built C7, also with big aero and lots of mods. They were driven by well-respected drivers Cody and Rif, who previously tracked raced-out M3s and are usually among the fastest at Buttonwillow. While the C6 is a full race car, the C7 is a milder build and races in a lower class. They joined us Sunday after competing Saturday at Big Willow Springs where each had taken 1st place in their class.

Here's a quick clip of Cody's C6 being chased by Steve's bad ass Comp Coupe and Mike's ACR:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CGj4RnvIig&feature=youtu.be

I was anxious to get on track with these guys and have some fun. Although I had never tracked against a C7, I had driven one briefly at Spring Mountain and was curious if I could keep up with this winged beast. I had all day Saturday to get my line dialed in and play with tire pressures, so by the time the Corvettes showed up I was ready to rock and roll. The morning session was ideal- track was grippy, temperatures were cool. The track was so grippy that Lee, Mike and Larry also laid down their personal best lap times.

I initially waived both Corvettes by, but after a few laps I had reeled in the C7 and was able to pass him. Eventually I caught the M3 and Ariel Atom that I had sparred with the previous day, and all hell broke loose. A car went off, then came back on in front of us, as you'll see in the next video. After that, I was able to get a clean lap. For context, the production car track record for Buttonwillow configuration 13CW is held by a Gen IV ACR at 1:55.7. All my practice at Buttonwillow paid off as I was able to turn a 1:52.7 lap, second fastest of the day only to the C6 race car, which turned a blistering 1:46.6. The C7 turned a best of 1:54.9, an impressive effort considering it was wearing 200 tread wear shoes. It was a surreal day, I cannot believe how capable these Gen Vs are with nothing more than a track alignment and tire swap.

Here are some more shots of the on-track action Sunday, including the Corvettes, and Lee after taking a little off-road excursion while chasing down a silver Viper Vert. We called this shot, "Distressed Finish," haha

Wow Todd...that's an incredible lap! And congratulations for setting a new personal best...and slaying the previous one in the Camaro! Props to Redsled as well for his pro experience and ability to coach so well. Incredible photograpy as always. Is there a track photographer that takes the on-track shots?

There's no way you aren't going to beat this time also in the future. That was too big a drop in lap times to have all aspects of your driving change and settle into that new pace. Where do you see gains coming from? Exciting times ahead!

I'd be interested in a good discussion about the dynamics of the car and car control sometime. What we experience on the street so far below the limits is one thing, but at the limit is where it gets interesting. I'm curious about the effects of an upgraded suspension on those aspects as we both approach the point where we might benefit from them.

Another excellent track thread...thanks for sharing!

Todd,

Hope alot of folks read this , as it is positive proof how capable the V is with just an upgrade of tires. Most folks just don't want to believe what a huge difference there can be with competitive rubber and it gives rise to the notion that the V is not just a capable track machine, but with practice , suspension adjustment , and a few other minor mods, it is a killer.

Hey Todd, great write-up, video's and pictures!!!

Really was a great weekend and your are getting so quick!!!!

Great to see the front straight video, Dan Cragin told me my viper sounds the best, need you to do a video on the front straight at Fontana for me.

Bill, not to take away anything from a G5, but Todd is really fast!!!! Would love to see him run that track in Bob's old comp coupe, he'd be in the 1:40's after a session or two!!

Oh yes you did, haha! I'm loving this Aim Solo DL and SmartyCam HD set up. The display shows you your lap time, and during a lap it displays a live -time or +time to let you know whether you're beating your best lap. It's quite a tool and because the text is so large and clear, you can almost read it without taking your eyes off the track. When I came across the start-finish line and it flashed a 1:52, I was blown away. Just couldn't keep it bottled in, LOL

Thanks Tony, and yes Hoosiers are amazing. I've run both the A6s and R6s, ridiculously high grip compared to anything I've ever driven including the Continental slicks.

Hey Brad, have you tried the new Buttonwillow surface? Most say it subtracts 1 to 2 seconds off per lap. I've never driven Buttonwillow with so much grip.

No doubt I really couldn't believe it was able to put down laps like this. Buttonwillow is an aero track, most cars under 2 minutes run with a big wing and splitter. I didn't think I would get anywhere near a 1:52. The Gen V engineers outdid themselves. Just imagine if they do a Gen V ACR, I hope SEMA is not just a tease. If they do, I WILL be using my voucher

Mike, I was having a blast watching you guys mix it up out there. Man I cannot wait to return to Buttonwillow. But first Laguna Seca 11/28 with the Shelby Club. 95 dB day, perfect for those of us with side pipes.

Man I would love to see what it's like to wheel a race car. Someone local has an ACR-X for sale that was out at Buttonwillow a few months back and hinted that they'd let me test drive it. I can't remember who though, which is probably a good thing, haha

Bruce

Thanks Bruce! Yep, there's a trackside photographer and he does a great job. I think he's a little nuts standing where he does at times, but the shots are awesome.

I'm finding that seat time is really the key to shaving time off my laps. The Solo DL has comparative lap analysis and other tools, I'd like to learn more on how to use that data to drop lap times. I haven't had time to play with it or figure out how to use the data. I suspect that I could brake a little later and harder, as I'm not even taxing the stock pads believe it or not. I've been hearing good things about the new PFC pads, maybe I'll get some along with front TA rotors.

I definitely improved my lap times when I turned stability control all the way off. I couldn't feel it intervening, but I noticed that I can increase the slip angle in the corners now so it must have been intervening in some way. I decided to wait until Buttonwillow to try this, because it's the safest track in California. Tons of flat smooth runout, almost nothing to hit. If you goof, your car gets powder-bombed with the finest dust you've ever seen. See Lee's car above, haha. But rarely do cars get damaged here.

I'm gonna leave this baby stock, it's just so good I don't feel compelled to mod anything. The Hoosiers and the TA alignment were the ticket. Actually, I exceeded the TA's specs a bit in the front camber, with -2.8 degrees per Erich Heuschle's advice.

There are still a few tricks that I will have to keep to myself since you are now getting too fast :) Very impressive times for sure, I would have to seriously drive the wheels off my ol' Gen II to match your times. Coaching and seat time are truly the best investment in a car if you want to get faster. Well done again. it looks like the Vipers were represented well last weekend.

Hey Jonathan,

Man I love the new surface at Buttonwillow. I found the line to be nearly unchanged as compared to before the repave. However, with my dampers in the Race setting it is STIFF. My car gets upset every time I hit the big bump exiting Riverside, it does feel bigger than it was before. Remember when you were my passenger and we went flying off the track at about 100 after I lost it hitting that same bump? Haha, a good memory and a little embarrassing. Your tip of going up on the curbing was the ticket. That nearly straightens the line completely as I exit the corner, so even though my car is bouncing around and unsettled, at least it's pointed in a straight line so it posed no issue. I talked to others that just drive around the bump but that makes me uncomfortably close to the outside edge of Riverside. Truth is, I like bumps at Buttonwillow including the new one, they present a challenge to the driver and reward skill.

I'm glad they didn't change the character of the track much, what an awesome venue and my all time favorite. Makes me want to move to Bakersfield. Looking forward to tracking with you in January.

When did Buttonwillow get resurfaced?.......last time I was there was Feb 28th and I don't think it was a new surface then.

Thanks man! One of these days we've got to find a way to hit the track on the same day, haha.

I believe it was repaved a couple months ago, Feb 28th was the old surface. New surface is both 1 to 2 seconds faster and much easier on tire wear. Also less debris coming up from the track to chip our paint :car-smiley-003:

That is quite a bit faster than a bone stock ACR time. What would it take to get an ACR to that neighborhood? Serious diet with maybe h/c setup?

Yes, gut the ACR, remove the AC and heater, heads and cam set up and Pirelli or Michelin slicks. Plus, find a driver that's the king of Buttonwillow, Cody would be my choice. I think every time I've tracked there but once, Cody was there. He must have thousands of track miles there. Chris Winkler only had a short time to learn that track, it's very flat so it's hard to see the corners clearly. Buttonwillow has a long learning curve, took me a long time to get used to it.

Absolutely insanely fast. Here's Cody's 1:41.9 lap, verified to be 13CW:

Venom I ended up going the other weekend when it rained- did a 1:56 on a damp track. didn't get any clean runs due to density of slow cars before it started raining... :(

That's cooking on a wet track! How did you like the Kumhos in the wet?

Did you end up going to Chuckwalla the next day? Speaking of Chuckwalla, today is the LAST day to sign up for Viper Tracks 2 at the discounted rate. Hotel rooms are filling up fast too. Price goes up tomorrow:

Don't forget the sequential gearbox for lighting fast shifts. What an unreal lap. That car has tons of grip.

Yea, that 30k transmission equipped on a gutted car would make that a race car. I wonder how close a stock ACR would be.

Typical corvette guys. Doesn't matter how many mods or how much it's really not even a corvette anymore. They try to compare it to a stock viper, and if they don't like the outcome then they just change the rules. It happens everywhere I go.

C. Winkler did a 1:47.7 in the new ACR for a production car track record.

I don't think he is claiming it is anything but a race car. I could be wrong. I don't know him personally.

No. He's claiming it's a race car. He's not one of those guys. He's humble and very kind

If you put slicks and Billy Johnson behind the wheel, the ACR will be into the low 1:40's.

I read in page 1 that the vette is 2500lbs. The acr will need to drop weight to bring lapatimes down too. 30k transmission? Fuggetteaboutit!
