Today it rained, hard, until about noon, and by 3, the roads were still a bit damp, but I couldn't take it anymore, and backed the Snake out of the garage. I drove her to Pike Creek, DE cruise in (where there were questions galore!) and back home, about 55 miles on a combination of highway, back roads, and stoplight congestion. And, she's now officially broken in (to me, at least) as I ran into light rain on the way home. I'm sure somewhere in her previous 7200 miles, she has encountered rain! The roads were just damp, not really wet, and the Corsas didn't lose traction even once, however, I wasn't pushing it. More thoughts:

1. Did I mention this car was fast? (Of course, you all know that). My 03 had some light mods, and was pretty brutal down low, and no slouch up top either, however, this car is so much more composed, that I don't realize my speed, and how quickly I got there, until I look at the speedo.

2. The lighter flywheel really does make a difference: this engine rev much faster then my 8.3. Just rowing through the gears is intoxicating. I see no need to change out the shift lever, it's not as short as the MGW I had, but it clicks into gear no problem, and I haven't missed a shift (yet). Just need to train myself to let 1st wind a bit higher, to avoid that damn 1-4 skip, which could actually be dangerous in certain situations.

3. I'm not normally a gizmo and gadget guy, and I rarely used the EVIC in my 07 SRT8. The gauges in my 03 were really all that I (felt) I needed, and was happy. However, I am impressed with the abundance of information available in this car, and the SRT performance pages are kind of cool. I've set my dash the way I like it, and find myself running with the oil pressure/voltmeter/coolant temp setting up on the screen
.
4. The brakes really work, and well. My 03 and the SRT8 stopped on a dime, no complaints about the Brembo setup on either car, but this car seems to haul down as much as it hauls ass. Perhaps it's the Stoptech rotors, or maybe just the way it's set up.

5. The steering wheel feels great, much like the steering wheel in my Dart (they are very similar). Thick where you need to be, and just feels right in my hands. The steering itself is also much improved, and it requires very little input to tell the car where to go.

6. I think I mentioned before that the car is simply planted. I purposely took a couple roads where my 03 required a lot of attention, and the 13 took it like a Lincoln (relatively, LOL). While this is still a Viper, and it is still two hands on the wheel (except when shifting), I already have a bit more confidence on the pretty bad (pothole-patched) PA roads here in Chester County, some of which are still terrible after last winter.

After I got home, I'm so anal, that I had to get some detail spray and microfiber, and clean the car up after getting caught in the rain. Well, and I have a show at 10 am tomorrow, and won't have time to clean it up, as I'm going to the gym first, then right home and out. My 03 had some funny nooks and crannies, but the sexy curves on this car hide a lot of water and water spots! However, I enjoy detailing my cars, and I'm going to have a good time with this one. I'll have to get on Autogeek and see what polish/wax combo is good for the Adrenaline Red paint.

Oh, one other thing. I noticed tonight with the car off and silent in my garage, when I depressed the clutch pedal to put her in gear, it has a minor squeak. Of course, you can't hear it unless everything is quiet. Normal?

Well, that's all for tonight. She may be the only Gen 5 at the show tomorrow (we have a few PA members coming), in a sea of P-cars, a Lambo or two, and other interesting iron, so I'm expecting may questions. Thanks for reading my post.

Thanks. I'm just real anal about little things like that. Actually, I'm anal about everything!

You're welcome. I keep thinking of all sorts of things after driving, and I need to write them down. I'll state what everyone else has: if most dealers had a demo car that they allowed for test drives, and I think they would sell themselves. Period.

glad to see you are out enjoying the car. What cruise in did you got to today? What car show is going on in PA tomorrow and where?

Went to Pike Creek tonight. Tomorrow is the Dilworthtown Inn (West Chester, PA) Wine Festival and Car Show - benefits the cancer program at Chester County Hospital. Come on up!

All sounds about right. Use WD-40 on the clutch pedal as I don't have the squeak.

This. Anyone who drives this car will surely love it, and understand why it isn't a Corvette.

Had it out again this afternoon. I'm very impressed how usable 6th gear is. On the highway at 55, where my 03 was almost idling, 6th in this car, is a nice cruising gear. Had to get used to the 6-4 downshift, 4 was a little more "left" than I thought, but once I practiced the 6-4 move a couple times (passing) it slips right in. Have I mentioned that I am LOVING this car? I don't want to stop driving it. I never had this feeling after I got my 03, as much as I loved that car.

I broke my tires loose twice this weekend in 2nd and 3rd gear under hard acceleration (but not really standing on it) 55 degrees and these roads become slippery - be safe!

Thank you. Yes, I've been able to do that on my PS2s on the 03 as well, in those temps. I NEVER get on a car, unless the traction is there. And at 55, it's usually ain't!

Yeah, I hear ya. And I haven't even had my '06 for a year yet. If I wasn't in the middle of major remodeling of my recently purchased house, maybe. Gotta stay out of the Gen V section. Lol

its not the pedal assembly. Its the diaphragm spring fingers flexing.

Cool how 6th gear is functional and is not an overdrive gear huh?

LOL, maybe they should have used The Pill! Bad joke, I know. So, at any rate, it's fine. You don't hear it normally with the engine on, so I'll won't worry about it. I'm just too anal....

Thanks, yours as well! We had a nice little collection of Gen 5s at the show yesterday: mine, your white T/A, and Doug's 1 of 1 SRT (not GTS) Stryker Green with Stripe and GTS hood. Interesting story behind that car, and Bill P made it happen for him!

Agreed, huge difference in usability and drivability.

The more you drive it, the more you will love it! My '14 GTS is just a great car so far--1,100 mi.

I also like the current gearing. However, I understand that for '15, the gearing will change, except for the TA 2.0; 6th will once again be a taller gear.

How tall ? Any specs ? Would be good to get out of the drone area when cruising on the highway between 70 and 80

Huh? While the trans gears were re-ratioed (except 4th at 1:1) the 5th and 6th cogs are still overdrive gears, just not as much as 92-10 CHECKING.........

Scott, great read, thanks....

I remember my first wet drive in a 2013 Launch Ed GTS at Road Atlanta.... Very wet, extra pace laps due to it.

Initially I was a bit frightened to push the car as fast as race control was requesting, but the traction control and Pirellis were confidence-inspiring to say the least.

COLD is another matter, until you get some warmth in the tires, (difficult to do on wet roads-highways,) BE CAREFUL at 40f and below!

My write-up of that wet-track episode and more: http://www.allpar.com/reviews/13/viper.html (http://www.allpar.com/reviews/13/viper.html)
