SRT® Motorsports Vipers Set for Title Run at Petit Le Mans; Ticket Packages Available

September 24, 2014

It’s the final countdown. From this battle will emerge the GTLM class winner of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. It all happens at Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, October 1–4. On the strength of a 1-2 finish at the Lone Star Le Mans, the SRT® Motorsports team assumes the points lead and will defend its position at the season-ending endurance race.

SRT Motorsports fans who own an SRT, Dodge R/T, or FIAT® Abarth vehicle can join the team at Road Atlanta by purchasing a ticket package on the SRT Events Page (http://www.drivesrt.com/events/controller.html?options=102) by Friday, September 26 at 5 p.m. EDT. Along with admission to the race, guests will have access to the paddock and the SRT Motorsports hospitality center, as well as an opportunity to meet the Team SRT drivers. They’ll also have the option of taking part in an on-track parade lap in their vehicle.

Road Atlanta is a 12-turn, natural-terrain road course, featuring the famed “esses” between Turns 3 and 5, and the downhill, diving Turn 12. Elevation changes make for a challenging circuit for drivers and teams, and an amazing view for spectators.

Road racing began at Road Atlanta in 1970 with all of the major sports car series competing at the venue over the years. The inaugural Petit Le Mans, held in 1998, served as the first race for the former American Le Mans Series (ALMS). It now serves as the final round of a title fight that promises plenty of drama.

The tandem of Jonathan Bomarito and Kuno Wittmer took over the driver’s championship points lead with their second win of the season in Austin, and moved SRT Motorsports into a tie with Porsche for the manufacturer’s title. The race at Road Atlanta will decide it all.

The 10-hour Petit Le Mans will take the green flag on Saturday, October 4, at 11 a.m. EDT. The race also serves as the finale of the 2014 Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup, a four-race mini-series comprised of the endurance events on the Tudor Championship calendar (Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Atlanta).

Go SRT! A championship would be amazing. The viper needs it in terms of marketing but also so that Dodge will bring the team back next year! There still hasn't been any official decision regarding the 2015 season!

Is this true?

Unfortunately yes. Beth Paretta seems to feel positive next season will come to fruition, but nothing has been confirmed. I've been in contact with a crew member who is also hopeful, especially with last weekend's performance. Chrysler has always been a bit non-committal about their sports car racing programs. I wish they'd realize what an asset the viper racing program is not only as a marketing tool, but as a great place to develop technologies for their street cars. Corvette gets it. I can only hope the SRT program will become a more permanent fixture in sports car racing. Crossing fingers!

Damn, I'll be serious bummed if they pull the plug. With the new Challenger in GrandAm I was hoping its a sign they were getting more serious about sports car racing.

Everyone wonders where all the marketing $$$ went for the Gen V, it's in the race team. That's why you don't see Gen V commercials except as part of the Tudor commercials.

Driver shuffle!

From Racer.com

The SRT Dodge Viper squad has split its GT Le Mans points-leading lineup ahead of this weekend's Petit Le Mans TUDOR United SportsCar Championship finale at Road Atlanta.
SRT Motorsports has placed Kuno Wittmer, who leads the GTLM points together with regular team-mate Jonathan Bomarito, in the #91 Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R with Marc Goossens and enduro-only driver Ryan Hunter-Raey for the Petit Le Mans 1000-mile enduro on Saturday. Dominik Farnbacher, Goossens' usual driving partner, moves over to the #93 car to share with Bomarito and endurance driver Rob Bell.
SRT racing manager Gary Johnson said: "What we've decided to do is switch the drivers in the Vipers to maximize our championship opportunities.

"If the #93 car ended up being taken out by another team, this would allow the #91 driver – in this case, Kuno – to win the championship or, vice versa, should the #91 have an issue."
Wittmer and Bomarito lead the GTLM title race by seven points from Corvette Racing driver Antonio Garcia. Goossens and Farnbacher are third, 10 points back and would have had a clear chance of winning the championship before the reshuffle.

It's what is best for the team "SRT" not the individual(s)...tough call but a right one to increase the chance for a championship.

Could you find out how they get those Race numbers to light up on the doors? Is there a bulb inside the door? or is it something to to with the number itself?

It is a powered electroluminescent panel with the number stickers on top. You could probably find something similar online.

What about manufacture?

Dodge came into the Petit Le Mans tied with Porsche for the manufacture's title. Unfortunately two porsches finished ahead of the 91 viper so Dodge gets 2nd place for the manufacture's championship.
