View Full Version : MGW Shifter Assembly?

Does anyone have a MGW shifter assembly (not just the shift knob) in their Gen V Viper? I had it on my 2008 and absolutely loved it. Not sure if the older ones are compatible with the new cars. MGW's site no longer has a "viper" section. Also, any idea what the threading is for the OEM shift knob? Thanks in advance!

Jason,
Just get the MGW "Race Knob". The Gen V shifter itself is very nice, doesn't need to be changed. The shorter and smaller knob makes it much better. I hate the baseball. Takes a whopping 10 minutes to install, also. For those wondering, you have to call MGW to order it. Their website sucks and hasn't been updated in years.

The new shifter is nice Tony, but I absolutely loved the MGW assembly. I will probably get a new knob also, but my 2-3 is killing me right now, and I prefer the extra force from the MGW.

It always baffled me why Dodge doesn't do something nice like this from factory. That giant 8-ball looking stock knob looks so trailer park.

That isn't the shifter. The new shifter is just as good as the aftermarket ones out there, I wish I had taken pics when I did the clutch swap. The difference is the gate spacing. The Gen 5 has wider gates, so you have to train yourself to move over to the right more. I have the 2010 TR6060 in my '06, and I have to consciously think about the gate when I bang gears in the Gen 5. Just practice.

The gate spacing is still better than my old Gallardo, and I was good with that. I just remembered doing the same thing in my G4 stock, and also in my buddy's stock 2010.

You are just rusty. I'll give you lessons in 3 weeks :)

Malu a lot of the 2-3 is hand positioning. Keep the pressure inside, and back when you really flick it quick.

MGW cannot fit a better shifter in the GenV because of tunnel clearance, this is what the new shifter looks like though.

I think owning that Lambo made him too soft and sissy-like.

I have a 2010 TR6060 now and I have having issues hitting 3rd smoothly. Going to give this Race Knob a try and see if it better positions my hand and gives me a grip to better give some inside pressure.

Haha, I know how to drive guys, just prefer the MGW, but doesn't matter now because they don't have one for the Gen V.

Thanks Mark, George had emailed me back during lunch time and let me know about the tunnel clearance. Really is a shame, the MGW setup is money!

Actually George has been a proponent for the Viper for a zillion years, still makes the best short throw shift kit for Gen IIIs and Gen IVs and can get items for those who call. His website has been updated , but the Viper is not listed and this is not due to his lack of concern for the Snake, it has to do to the fact that Dodge will not allow rights to the Stryker, so MGW is essentially hamstrung for the new cars. He has had more personal Vipers than practically anyone on this website except the Rauhs, and he is pretty sad about the situation, as the Viper was what got him started in expanding the business from making armament accessories, parts, upgrades for major Gun Manufacturers and the Government. Without the ability to license with Dodge, he essentially was shut down for our low volume machine. Can tell you no one is sadder than George but he has to be able to have a fair pricing and ability to market low numbers and the system is not set up for this at present. Let's all hope Dodge reevaluates how it licenses small companies as this is going to slow down some companies that want to make the limited number of parts for the Gen V.

I bought the Race Knob from him yesterday. Just had them put a "6 speed" logo on the top like below. I know what I am driving anyway, don't need another Fangs logo in my face. :)

That race knob is the best choice. The Snakegripper looks cool, but you definitely got the one that functions the best on the track , and in my mind for overall driving.

The G5 shifter is a billet mechanism versus stamped for the G4. I have a 2010 trans in my G5, with the G5 shifter. The G4 shifter on the G4 trans would not fit in my car.
As already stated the MGW ball is more effective, it would be nicer, with the Stryker logo.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the existing knob? It does not seem obvious and I don't want to make a mistake.
Thanks

Push down the boot to expose the jam nut, it then becomes obvious.

I use a plastic trim removal tool, and pop the plastic panel that surrounds the shifter up from the leather console area. Just has 4 push-in clips holding it in place. Can find them on ebay or Northern Tool.

Why are you pulling the trim, the ball comes off from the top with the trim in place?

Agree 100%, love the Race Knob :-) Really disappointed I cannot get Stryker for my Gen V :lame:

I guess I never tried pushing the leather boot down over the nut. Takes 5 seconds to pop the plate. I'll try it the other way next time.

The only problem I have ever had doing a knob install by pushing it down is with the boot is the little rubber O-ring falling out of the neck of the leather and being a total bitch to get back in to keep the top of the boot secure. The last time I pulled the console panel off and glued the leather flaps down around it.

I don't believe there is any o-ring on the G5. The underneath rubber boot is your seal, the leather boot is cosmetic.

My X came with one, not sure if they were factory or not. I did two track weekends with it and promptly removed it. Went to a Hurst and like it MUCH better. Comes down to personal preference mostly.

The G5 shift components (top/integral to trans) are billet, versus, the G4 6060 which are stamped parts, therefore, the G5 6060 should be a tad better. IMHO if the clutch is good, the G5 trans should shift as good as any car. that is the whole idea of the dual disk (G4/G5), a better shifting trans when the foot is too the floor.

This, I flat shift my car on a regular basis with zero issues. Gen4/5 6060 is one of the best shifting transmissions I've ever felt.

This is an old thread, but my issue turned out to be multiple things (shift knob, transmission, and clutch). Very happy with my modified MGW shorty gripper shift knob!

Do you have to remove the center console to install the shifter reduction kit for a Gen V, and if so, how do you do this?
As stated above?
