View Full Version : New wheels for my TA.

Well they arrived yesterday evening and I spent all night hand painting the engraved SRT logos in TA Orange. Very happy with how the set turned out. Best offsets I've ever put on a Viper by far. Wheels are stock sizes and I went with the Toyo R888's. Fitments are good and no rubbing at the stock ride height. I'm sure I'll lower it at some point but for now here she is.

Also thanks to Austin for helping me with some photo shops, and the usual group I bounce ideas off of, Slowhatch (Alex), Nineball (Tony), and Absolutehank (Ryan).

It edit some more photos tomorrow night but here's the first two.

This was my only dissapointment in the set. They came out to about 5lbs per wheel heavier wich I didn't expect staying with stock sizes and a slightly lighter tire (about 1lb per wheel). There are a couple ways to cut that delta down though that I can do on future sets. Machining race pockets in the back of the spokes, and using a titanium fastener would get them to about 2lbs per wheel heavier than stock I think.

Because the car isn't spinning the extra 20lbs on me at it's corners. I could stand to lose a bit of the static weight lol. I'm down 5lbs this week (thanks a lot salad). This will help motivate me lol.

Thanks for being upfront and honest about it...it's obviously not what you were after, but it's good info that will help others make an informed decision. Dodge/SRT did a good job on the factory wheels, that's for sure. Probably one of the best looking OEM wheels on a Viper ever...I still do like a nice set of custom aftermarket wheels. Might have to swing by Forgeline one of these years...

Yeah no worries spoke design will affect weight as well as the thikness of the pad (mounting surface) that aftermarket companies use. Thrilled about not having to clean the stockers anymore. And as I mentioned I think I can make some changes to get these lighter and closer in weight to the factory wheel.

I posted earlier, right at 5lbs heavier per wheel. Nothing crazy but heavier none the less. I have seen aftermarket 3 pieces wheels as high as 15lbs heavier a wheel. And that was against the Sidewinder II's. I would think the Gen V big 5 spoke wheel would be around that same weight.

I think my HRE 3-piece 20/19 wheels 10 to 20 pounds heavier a corner. Damn those things were heavy.

Oh on a side note, the Gen V tire sensors talk to the ECU without having to be reprogrammed at the dealer!

I was going to have to drive the car into Tomball for a reset on the sensors, but I noticed the pressures changed to the new sensor readings and began working immediatly.

Car looks great!

Factory Track Pack wheels are ultra light, especially the fronts. It would take a race-inspired monoblock forged wheel to make them even lighter. 3-piece requires a lot of extra material removed from the backside of the lug pad and spokes, as well as the Ti fasteners. Just the fasteners are worth 1.5 lbs per wheel, vs stainless. Wheels with hidden fasteners are also usually lighter, as they don't require the nuts on the backside of the fasteners.

I'm loving those tires. Mmmmmm

Probably wont get the new tires on track until COTA in December unfortunately, unless I hit an Autocross before then. In a straight line with traction control completely off and 40lbs of pressure in the rears (what they had in them) it completely stuck without a chirp through three gears stabbing it in first at 20mph.

Love the look, but I'd be careful to check with somebody who knows for sure that you will be able to set up the alignmnet properly, and that it won't adversely affect handling too much on the track if that's one of your priorities. Coilovers are designed to handle reduced ride height but you want to make sure the stock dampers can if you're just swapping out springs. I'd also consider increasing the spring rates slightly if you've spent enough time on track to formulate your own assessment for your tracks.

I know I couldn't lower mine and survive on the track because now that I've removed the wheel spats I can hear the splitter scraping in extreme cornering. Improve the tire grip or brakes and it's going to scrape more. I couldn't avoid driving through some fairly fresh gravel on a road once and my splitter leveled that stuff off just as smooth as could be...and then there's residential and commercial driveways :(

Static lowering looks good curb-side (Austin's pic is awwwesome), but your TA will also appear "lowered" while in action. As much as you plan to track, and how much you've been kicking ass in auto-x, you might disrupt the car's behavior. This is how yours looks at the track. Except it doesn't turn orange like that. ;)

Bruce I've had it on track and autocross quite a bit. You seem overly concerned with something that can come off as quick as it goes on. Trying new things is good, if it improves the car it stays, if it doesn't it goes. Think about how fast Ralph's car is and also how far from stock it is compared to all of our gen V's.

Bruce H.
09-12-2014, 08:29 AM
I don't know anything about Ralph's car beyond his tune, but do know we're all learning together on this new platform... and it will be great to get your feedback on new springs!

I definitely have a long and healthy interest in suspension, and for the TA's have grilled it's chief SRT suspension and handling guru, an SRT GT3-R factory crew chief, and compared my experience at VIR with C&D's Lightning Lap, analyzed their data for the TA, and between it and the other top performers. I'll have a pretty good handle on the direction I'll go on my car for the tracks I drive...and every minute and a half I'm reminded that I'll have to do that when I increase the suspension load with tires, brakes or driving technique.

Good luck with yours!

Love that look - really aggressive , a little track, a little show, perfect mix! and the orange paint is a great addition.

We really need Gen V spring caps. That way we keep our spring rates. Whitehead Motorsports should make some for us. :)

If you dont mind waiting a year, dragging lawyers into the mess and probably never seeing the product, you could always contact Vipair to make some.:fpopcorn:

Glad I have guinea pig friends like you. (did I just call you a pig? lol). If the front splitters don't scrape coming off of the sweeper at TWS, then I'll follow your lead. Ha

Lol. If my splitter didn't scrape coming down off that turn, I knew I wasn't going fast enough. :)

Don't the replacement springs have a stiffer spring rate, and thus see less deflection under heavy cornering--thereby counteracting the slightly lower ride height?

I heard from the man himself today that the springs need to remain the same on the TA's. The mod Tony mentioned is going to be the only way to get the car down and still have it perform correctly outside of swapping to Moton's.

Thats because the valving in the adjustable shocks probably doesn't like being detached from the spring rates it was setup for. Cap time..

Tomball/ViperExchange is now offering the suspension modifications for all Gen V Vipers, we have been testing and working with Engineers during the last season to create the perfect modification, with the help of our GT3R car and the team at SRT. The mod will be available exclusively through Tomball Dodge/ViperExchange , the installs will begin this upcoming week, for more information you can reach out to Nathan Dainton at Tomball 281-351-2000.

We have had them installed a 14 TA for several weeks and they not only help the ride quality but also improve the appearance.

Can you comment on the modifications effect on performance and ability to maintain TA spec alignment?

See you guys this week. This was what I was looking for. A slight drop that retained or improved the factory performance. I'll have them installed for the COTA race this weekend if anyone driving down wants to check it out.

Looking forward to your results Andy! I love the ride of the GTS in street mode, and have received several compliments from others about the ride quality. The front wheel gap is too much though, so that needs to be addressed.

I understand, I know Nineball and CDubb went with a 19 up front to help with that. I'll get my car into Tomball this week to get them installed. Should have some first impressions and pictures by, or over the weekend for us.

Didn't require the 19, just requires the taller tire. Gen 3-4 cars had a 26" tall front tire. Gen 5 has the stupid looking 25" tall tire, that is why the fender gap is off. Bet the car was designed for the typical 26" front tire. So, that is what Cody and I did. Now the front and rear gaps are equal.

Sorry I should have clarified that an overall hieight adjustment was made.

What is surprising to me is that my Gen V understeers less with the 25 inch tall tire than my Gen IV & III did with the 26.

Could be the active handling. I've tried to force understeer on that sweeper at MSR, and the car tells me to screw off. LOL. Shit works well.

Could be, but I did make a few runs with it off at the last two autocrosses and it still was more balanced. As long as I kept pressures 1-2psi less in the fronts it didn't plow like the older gens. With equal pressures all the way around it was balanced and with a little less up front the rear was a little easier to steer with the throttle.

Straight line traction is improved, not even a chirp between shifts, just plants and goes. Probably why they are so popular on the UGR Lambo's.

I got a good heat cyle on them yesterday on some back roads. Didn't push the car really hard in the corners but hard enough to starting getting a feel for them, So far so good I am going to drop the pressures a little more and play with them again. I expect to get an autocross and the COTA day on them before the new year. That will be the real test.

Sorry I am a little late to this party but I love the wheels. I really like the recessed center area. Almost looks like the reverse of a center lock, if that makes sense. They look perfect. And the orange letters are a nice touch. Totally worth the effort to hand paint them IMO.
