View Full Version : If the Viper's manual has been dropped into to the Challenger

Are the dimensions all that different from the auto for the Challenger to do the reverse?

Chances are that the manual is the smaller of the two, so I'd seriously doubt it.

On another note, how hard would it be to make similar floorplan changes to the Viper in order to accept the 8-speed?

Just a guess, the torque converter, plus, a taller/fatter trans takes up a lot of the tunnel space. The 6060 has no extra space in the tunnel. That would be a nice option.

Yeah that's my curiousity. If they can do it one way, why not the other?

I am sure the manual takes up less space, but what could they potentially do?

Im looking into it, I will know something soon but so far the auto looks like it will fit and room to spare, not sure about the electronics to make it work. There are few viper with an auto from the trucks and they fit fine.

I don't understand the infatuation with an automatic transmission. Not in here to spark a flame war, but also don't think my confusion warrants its own thread.

To help sales. Unfortunately, most drivers want a car that strokes their ego rather than challenge them. If it helps sales and keeps the car around, I'm all for it. Just leave the manual as an option.

one fits in the GTS-R, but with less HP

The auto into a G2 is not a drop-in.

Personally, I don't get the infatuation with the manual. Both have merits. Look how fast Keating goes with paddles. It is the future and IMHO it is simply a metric of "does the Viper want to sell more cars"

Younger people simply don't know how to drive manuals or have little desire to. Combine that with how few young people are now gear heads, it is a big problem for all manufactures.

Manual transmissions are getting left behind progressively. Fewer gears, slower shifting, lesser fuel economy. I don't understand why everyone wants to hang onto the past. I don't exactly see Ferrari owners saying their new cars are less engaging. I tell this to my P-car friends too who are all complaining about the new 911 GT3. The only thing I want to be sure of is that an e-gear setup is going to be as reliable as the manual trans.

100% agree.

As far as the "disengaged" driving aspect of it, if I were to pick someone to ensure the Viper still has its "magic" - it would be Ralph. I say do the DCT-ish upgrade now while he is heavily involved.

I spoke to an SRT drive train engineer at the homecoming event about the manual transmission in the Hellcat and he mentioned it's actually stronger than the current Viper trans. I thought that was interesting.

It needs to be - the car weighs about 1,000 pounds more, and sits behind and engine with more power/torque.

Important to note that it has a sequential transmission. Much different than a DCT.

This should be the tech specs/size on the Hellcats Tranny... I think this is the one
