100 hp per liter NA? 840 bhp!

Do you think Dodge could do it? Would they? I know it's been done a few times, the McLaren F1 had it in 1993. All those cars that achieved 100 hp/liter were/are OHC. Is it even possible with an OHV engine?

Like ACRucrazy posted in another thread, an 800+ bhp Viper is probably wishful thinking.

It's completely possible with the current platform - with the addition of direct injection and some lighter weight components to increase the redline. Will they do it? Probably not unless there's a really good reason (guaranteed sales to recoup the investment).

I remember the old Acura that hit the magic 100 HP per liter mark. That little engine was the most powerful engine per displacement for a naturally aspirated engine at the time, and that was about 20 years ago if memory serves me right. They didn't last too long, though...

I agree, what really needs to happen is to get the codes cracked or released. I honestly just don't think the manufacturer can do a whole lot more with that motor and please the EPA. I don't think the new ones will come with a whole lot more if any, but I really do believe that motor has a while lot more untapped potential than what it's showing.

There will be no real improvements in the 8.4L V10. Its life time is extremely limited. If anything, it will be a dramatic change that will piss a lot of people off, but there really isn't much Dodge can do, the EPA is just out of control. The engine has a lot of power in it, but it just isn't in the cards with the govt.

A smaller V10? Smaller V10 + KERS? V8? All possibilities. But, to think Dodge is going to invest heavily in the current engine platform is just preposterous - at most they'd get 3-4 years out of it and it won't be worth it.

The small V10+KERS is an interesting idea, but I honestly think the Hellcat of something along those lines would be a more effective use of the limited funds they have. While I would love to see the V10 live on, if they can figure out how to squeeze the Hemi in there and it saves the car, so be it.

They already said that the hellcat motor wouldn't fit in the viper. V10 Kers would be awesome but I could only imagine how much that would cost.

The Ferrari 458 successor will have a turbo. Looks like N/A engines in super cars will be rare. Times are changing.

Well, that probably wouldnt happen either. We all know how Mopar/SRT likes to blow smoke up our asses about bringing out parts, etc... and never actually following through. And the small chance they do, the prices are out-fucking-rageous!

I guess I don't get the "gotta be a v10 forever!" argument. Probability half the people gnashing their teeth for a supercharger as a factory option would say the same - but there has never been a supercharged Viper from the factor you can buy. So, along the same why aren't people upset as that as an option?

While I think the V10 is fun, I don't think it alone is what defines the Viper. If they could make some kickass engine that still allows the Viper to dominate everything, I say go for it. To me it is the sum of the parts, not just a single one that defines its performance.

But, to each their own. I guess no one would force anyone to buy a V8 Viper :)

A high revving V10, would be amazing. But, to make a better business case for the Viper, it would have to be a V8. The V10 is dead the way the EPA is and had been heading, esp for a company not willing to invest in it.

No problem with badass V8's, but the V10 IS the signature of the Viper. People wouldn't mind a supercharged V10 because it's still a V10.
If they can't find a way to make the engine continue to evolve because of EPA restrictions (I still think direct injection would be a very nice jump in hp), then the Viper name should be retired. There's nothing saying they can't come out with a new halo car with a fire breathing, high tech engine and performance to top the Viper. It just needs to be called something other than a Viper.

I'd like to see a redesigned V10, less displacement, more RPM, lighter and either 4valve with additional 1k RPM or supercharged. These cars (Gen 4/5) just don't MPH like Vettes and Porsches do given their rwhp numbers and weights. If we were to get more RPM and longer time in gear, I think that would change.

I agree. If the formula is going to change that much let the Viper name retire and come up with something else. Venom has been thrown around with a concept car and seems to fit the Evolution. I newer, smaller, FI, better V10 sounds great but I don't think they are going to invest that kind of money in it. I hope I'm wrong, but being a compulsive realist I just don't think it's going to happen. It's amazing a car that created the mold no longer fits it. If it does change I do think the V10 motored car will be the sought after cars down the road, for as many years as they have built them, there really isn't that many out there.

Agreed, it's an awesome motor, and the fact it won't fit can probably be handled. I like to think of myself of a Viper Purist and would love to see the V10 live on, but I just don't think it can. It's an old design that has had a lot of new tricks thrown at it. DI and a dry sump are really the only feasible things to throw at it short of a complete redesign. But it's hard to argue the power of the SC6.2, and it will probably be embraced more by the aftermarket. And there is probably more untapped power to be had.

Let the Viper retire in style and rework what needs to be done to fit the Hemi in it and give it a new name. We all want to see the car live on, if it has to evolve in this way it's better than just giving up on it completely.

Viper name won't be going anywhere if they are forced to put a smaller engine in it. Thats a pipe dream for enthusiasts IMHO - which haven't turned out to be big buyers in the end so what do their opinions really matter to bean counters?

With all the shops and SEMA guys around this country, I am surprised someone hasn't stuffed a SRT 6.2L in a salvaged Viper already. BUT the Viper will be a V-10 or a different model name completely if a V8. Despite power levels of Hellcat and my acceptance of a Dodge two seater V8 sports car, it should be a different name if they go this V8 direction. That is the least they could do for the poor ole whipping boy in these late years. Give it some respect, it has held the torch well and with dignity!

As I've said on the other site...Put the new engine in a different car/chassis & label it something else. Let the beloved V10 remain in the viper or let it molt its final epidermal layer & slither off into automotive hissstory!!!
