View Full Version : Door Hinge Question

I've been through my service manual, but I'm not exactly sure what to even call the part I'm talking about, so I'm hoping someone might be able to chime in.

I recently had my car painted (all body panels removed) and when I got it back, I could hear a slight noise when opening and closing the driver door. I couldn't figure out what it was, but when I opened the door the other day, a small piece of metal (maybe 2" x 1") fell out of the hinge area.
Now the noise is gone, but my door will not hold itself open.
Basically, the noise I was hearing must have been the piece that holds the door open in a couple of different positions, and it gave way and broke. It doesn't look like much, but I have no idea what to call it in order to find a replacement.
Any help would be appreciated, as it's kind of pain when parking on any kind of front incline and trying to get out without the damn door wanting to close on me.

It sounds like you've experienced a case of the broken door hold open spring.

Chryslers answer is a new hinge. SnakeOyl has a spring repair kit that will fix your probelm for lots less than a new door hinge.

They're in stock, give us a call.

I appreciate the effort, but this is for a Gen III, not a Gen II. Also, it's a piece of metal that holds the door open and broke in half, not a spring.

My drivers side hinge was doing the same thing (noise/binding) and had it replaced before it got worse.

Why not post a picture of the part?
If it were me, I'd take the car back to the paint shop and insist they fix the problem.
I've had several cars painted, and if done right, they take the doors off.

The Gen2 kits are not a spring as in coil type. It is a flat piece of spring steel bent in a fashion to hold the door open. Did you caqll to see if the Gen 2 kit will work with a gen 3

Thanks for the responses. They did have the doors off when painting it and the paint shop is taking care of it.
I didn't call to see if the SnakeOyl kit would fit a Gen III since it said Gen I & II on the site.

I have a 98 rt/10. My door hinge spring broke off the other day. Got out of the car and I could not close the door. I had to force it closed with some horrible noise. I went to Dodge and had to buy the door hinge which cost $266.00. What a bunch of thieves.

My 98 rt/10 door hinge spring broke off like yours. Dodge wants $266.00 for the hinge. SnakeOyl I called and couldn't help me. Call X2 Builders at 866 674-7784 and ask for Kevin. I got mine from him. $100.00 plus s & h.
