idle speed

I am curious. I have a 98 rt/10. It runs absolutely perfect. It idles at 400 rpm's. Is this a normal idle speed for this car. It is very steady and does not fluctuate, even when the a/c is turned on. I know, if it is not broke, don't fix it, but I was curious if this idle speed was a little low.

It's a common misconception that Vipers idle ridiculously low. The very first tick on the tach is 500 RPM. It's right next to the zero tick. The second tick is 750 RPM. If your car were actually idling at 400 RPM, the needle would be hovering over the zero.

Mines around 500, I just asked this to a friend as he has a gts and he said its all normal.

look carefully at the rpm scale, the marks are not evenly spaced

I think it should be 680-720 -ish. as Prey said above, check with an OBD scanner with real-time data capabilities. The needle/gauge may be off a bit.

I don't think a Gen2 will idle perfectly at 450rpm, the idle will be rough. It should be around 650rpm. Maybe you have a problem with the instrument cluster or the pickup. Hook up a diagnistoc tool, it will tell you the real speed of the engin.

It sounds like you can get a bluetooth adapter along with your phone to see a lot of different readings...

Yes I tried the Torque app with a Kiwi adapter. I kept on having connection issues and I was not impressed with data log feed back (graphs and such). It might have been because of my older phone. It's not a bad app/set up if you just want to clear codes and monitor one parameter. I prefer ScanXL Pro if you want to get serious about data logging.
