OK. Its time to cave an go aftermarket...
For those of you that remember, a few years ago I royally grenaded my half shaft on the start line at the Mopar Nats. New OE back in, and called it a day.
I have refused to upgrade them as the tranny is really the next weak link IMO so figured a 1/2 shaft was cheaper.
But, I am annoyed as I think I have another slightly twisted unit in the car now. My line I drew on it prior to install is curvier that it use to be and I can hear the dreaded clunk on sharp corners.
So I think I will bight the bullet.
Question is, what brand? Is there more than one? I know of Unitrax but are there better ones? Used ones worth considering? What is a good price for new? Thoughts? Opinions? Why is the sky blue? :D
Thanks!
Robert

Doesn't Mark Williams make better shafts than Unitrax?

The answer to your question will probably lie in your HP demands......You can put 93 octane premium pump fuel in a Ford Pinto because its the best fuel.....but why waste $$ ?
For the $$$ you wont beat the Unitrax brand (from PartsRack Please) if you are G1-2 and 900HP and below.....

Why even ask about USED if you say you are 'biting the bullet' ?

Too Funny ! I just pulled my shafts out and am sending them to Devin at Unitrax , Via FedEx Air. He will put the 300m barrel drilled shafts in , and am told there good for 1000hp. On my Gen 3. Devin is a great guy to deal with and he is a sponsor ! Give me a call if you need more info Robert. ;)

I remember that well............. :D Since you drive like Grandpa, I don't think you have to worry about it. I think your clunking noise could be loose straps or bad U-joint. I would take it off and have a look at it.
That being said, if you're dead set on upgrading, Unitrax or Gforce. Both make good half-shafts. I think Gforce gives a lifetime warranty.

Yes would be 500 HP and 3.73s so well under 900 hp. And no. No slicks at this point.
Why biting the bullet and asking about used? Because for me, new beefy half shafts are still a lot of money. I do understand there are many different income brackets in the Viper world, but for me, I still consider this a larger purchase due to the value of them, new, or used.

I will for sure hit you up for some info! Thanks Jay! :)

Haaaaahahaha :D I bet you do remember that! I was trying to beat you out the hole and got a bit zesty. :D
Wow! Grandpa!? That hurts! :lol2:
Yes, you may be right. I did inspect all of the straps and they look good. And I did put in new U joints in to ensure that used OE shaft was up to snuff when I installed it. But that doesnt mean one is faulty....valid point. Maybe a pull and inspection of both sides would be a smart move first.

Unitrax is your best bet. JonB can sell the 800hp halfshafts to you from Unitrax. I suggest buying the Unitrax driveshaft loops as well as they're reasonably priced and a great way to save possibly smashing a fuel line, sparking and burning up. (Not likely, but possible).
Once you get up around 750-800+ rwtq I would suggest CV type axles shafts. jtin at thevipergarage.com bought a set that should be fine until about 1100whp from an outfit for $1250 including the required stubs for the rear diff (see thread at www.thevipergarage.com). JonB may would know if Untirax sells these.
I have $4400 rear axles in my TT GTS and they have held up to 1500whp+ and wrinkle slicks with no problems. I do notice that one of my CV joints need inspection though. These axles have about 9000miles on them. Not sure if the Quafie posi or Wavetrac is required for these axles or not? The MW axles have SFI stickers on them but the 1200whp axles do not.
