Really weird…. I’m getting this strange dust looking stuff behind the glass on my rear view mirror. Car is kept crazy clean with zero dust inside the car. Appears to be getting worse and since it’s behind the glass it can’t bet cleaned. Anyone take one apart?

I have this exact issue as well! And I also live in the Houston area…I assumed it had something to do with the high humidity and moisture getting between the glass and the mirror, but have never had a problem like this with any other vehicle. I was thinking about making a post, but everyone I have ever talked to has never had or heard of this issue. Interested to see the responses, or a potential solution other than replacing the mirror

The reflective layer is delaminating.

It’s a 2014. Yea really strange part to fail. It never really cooks in the sun or anything. Gotta be the first mirror I’ve seen fail in my life haha.

Anyone know if the mirror is available? Maybe JonB has a used one in good condition.

FWIW I have taken the mirror apart and it was hell. Don't bother trying, save yourself the pain and just buy a new mirror.

Thanks for the tip! If I got one from a used car is it pretty easy to remove from the piece that’s glued to the glass? Obviously I don’t want to remove the part that’s glued to the glass. Was assuming there must be a mount back there connecting to it.

It is a relatively easy replacement. Remove the cover for the mirror mount, unplug the connector and slide the old mirror off the mount, it may take a little finessing. To install, plug the connector together with the new mirror, slide the mirror onto the mirror mount and replace the cover. I had to replace mine last year, dimmer function failed to dark only, unable to locate a used one was able to purchase a new one.

Where did you purchase a new one from?

To remove it you rotate the mirror and base counterclockwise 90* and it pops off of the part that is glued to the glass.

I purchased the mirror from WorldPartsDirect.com. See the below link.

The early 70's Fords had some weird oxidation issues.

"silvering" is the term when a mirror does this.

Thanks guys! This counter clockwise 90 degree tip was key! I would have been losing my damn mind and so worried about accidentally cracking the windshield. It comes off right at the point you feel like you’re turning to hard. Back in business and got so lucky with a flawless one for $60.

Once replaced plug in a dehumidifier in the garage to control oxidation so it doesn’t happen again.

how hard is it to disassemble the mirror itself to get to the glass, theres refurbishing services where they will apply new silver
