Version 3 of the Ntense Auto Werks SRT Viper sub box. I have enough space to fit a fosgate P3 8" in the box.

I did the same thing on mine. I did keep it as a band pass box though. I stuffed it, and was able to put a nice JL in there. What a difference. I actually had to turn it down a bit to get the staging right because it out drove the fronts (which were also amped up and swapped out).

It should real good. I cut my bulkhead cover but i'm going to make one a little smaller so the bulkhead cover doesn't have to be cut.

I've been going back and forth on doing something like this. Looks like a great project. Is it difficult to remove the rear bulkhead and get to the sub box?

billseast
11-02-2013, 03:02 PM
Its not to hard. Just have to pull the roll bars. It takes a 13mm to remove the bolts from them. Then there are about 6 screws in the bulkhead cover phillips head screw driver. Then you can lean it forward to get to the box. If yo want to pull the cover out of the car you have to unbolt the seat belts.

Haha, sorry I've been MIA, been catching up on past threads... Not a box at all, I'm flattered that it looks that well though. Mine is much more simple then that. I used 2 speaker spacers from eBay (1/2" and 1") and a foam seat from an old camaro I had lying around to fill the space between them and keep it from rattling when turned up... Attached the first spacer to the box itself (1"), which met up well with where the plastic surround meets the sub enclosure, a thick 1 inch cut of seat foam then the 1/2" on the outside of the plastic surround, followed by the subwoofer itself. Since the plastic is recessed for the speaker already when I added the outside spacer and the sub on top you honestly can't tell it wasn't meant to be like that unless you really look11031

NMviperguy

So the sub $149 from Amazon, and spacer $15 combined... A cheap down and dirty way to get that huge sub in with absolutely no issues with bass. I listen to my music LOUD, and bass comes through deep and enough for me not to even consider a second!11032

No cutting or damage to the factory plastic, and can easily be converted back to a factory subwoofer. Hey you want some real bass without modification, give it a shot! Got a spare camaro seat if ya need it ;)

Oh and no. This sub is 6 1/2 inch to fit in the stock bulk head spot again no cutting

This is a good thread, for those of you that don't know the G3 sub-box can be an issue when trying to replace a bad speaker or upgrading to a better sub-bass speaker.
The speaker and box are unique and need to be replaced as an assembly, they don't make a replacement speaker that works and the box cannot be modified to accept another bigger or better speaker.

Hope this helps.

Assuming the Gen 3 and 4 sub boxes are the same (I can't see why they would be any different), it can be modified to work with a different 6.5" sub, but the results aren't that great. I removed the funky port, sealed it, and used an MDF speaker ring to fit a 6.5" CDT audio subwoofer in the factory location (it was slightly taller/deeper). Everything fits behind the bulkhead just like stock. Even powered with an aftermarket amplifier (350 watts available on the sub channel), it just doesn't push enough air to overcome the bass note of the engine while it is running. I actually have it wired so I can either use the factory sub location or the single 10" sub I have in a box in the hatch...it's nice to have options.

The box in the first post and the website is the boxes i make. They have good sound but i want to have more so i will be putting a sub in the passenger floor also. If i could get a break from all the sub boxes for customers i can get started on it. I had a pioneer 8" in the bulkhead and it was better then the fosgate because the fosgate needs more airspace. My box vers stock box.

From your pictures of the installed box, it appears that you lose the midrange driver mounted above the sub. Is this in fact the case or can that driver be kept?

PaulP

Indyron, there is no factory midrange driver above the factory sub, its a factory port for the factory sub box, most guys put a sealed box vs ported in.

The stock box is made out of plastic and it will flex with a more powerful sub. My box is made out of fiberglass and will not flex. When i box flexes it distorts the sound. I just built a box for a 18" kicker that uses 10,000 watts. the box had to made out of 1" thick MDF and fiberglass on all the seems to keep the box from falling apart. I have 2 10" image dynamic subs in my daily driver car. They hit 113 dbs but its just not enough so i just traded a sub box for a 12" sundown sub. People are getting up to 160dbs with one 12".

I'm not trying to take away from billseast sales at all, heck i brought life back to this thread for you. I do agree, a strong box is always a good thing and I obviously can't speak to the strength of the stock, I've only had a viper for a month. I can say that the spacers are also bolted to the bulk head which I would assume would add to its strength. I think it's awesome that people step up and add aftermarket items for our cars even as they age. What works for me may not work for the next, but I think it's great to have options, and I'm honestly not worried about warping my car with a subwoofer:car-smiley-003:

It would have to go into the passenger floor on in the trunk. If you have a coupe the trunk area would be best. But in a convertible we have to use the stock area or passenger side floor. I'm all caught up on boxes right now so i will see what i can work up in the floor area.

Are any of you fiberglass, speaker box gurus doing a bulkhead swap out yet? I would jump on that in a heartbeat.

In the between the seats bulkhead Gen III, I would think a really nice 8 would sound good, stereo guys agree? Or do you have to go ten, and will one even fit? I would think a ten would overpower everything else, necessitating some creative installations and I wouldn't want to change any door panels or have the speaker sticking way far out. I don't however, mind the center sub sticking out a bit. Especially painted body color to match.

But if any of you fiberglass studs out there are wanting to get into the bulkhead swap business, I am sure there would be some interested parties. Put me on the list!!!

Thanks for your input, stereo gurus.

I'm not too worried about a few pounds. Eventually I will also add sound deadening, read in a past thread about roof flashing working just as well as dynaliner as long as you don't get the asphalt based flashing. Should also help with heat so a win win in my book!

The problem with that is the air space you need for the sub to work correct would make it to big for the bulkhead. You have it easy you have a coupe just need to put a box in the back.

How about 2 8"s in the hatch?

I understand your desire, but you can make an easily removable sub box that goes in the hatch. It flat out isn't worth trying to do what you are suggesting when there's a better, easier solution.

The other idea i had for the coupe is to cut the section of the trunk next to the battery. Then i could just build a box that would slide in and hang next to the battery.

Bought a JL 6w3 to put in the stock location, figured I'd build a custom box. I have a Vert and with the top down, basically any music behind me hardly makes it to my ears. I've got 2 focal mids+tweeters that are wasted in the waterfall area. I was concerned that even a better sub would suffer the same fate, especially after reading so many comments. I've got a shallow Kicker sub in the factory box already. Sounds like sh*t. So, I built an enclosure to go in the passenger footwell, probably around .75 cu/ft, more than that speaker needs. All I can say is that I enjoy listening to music again in my car. It is unbelievable, music doesn't sound off-key anymore and if I want, I can shake the car. I won't waste my time stuffing something behind the waterfall.

Just finished my install of a 6w3v3-4 sub-woofer in my Gen3. I followed NMviperguy's installation tips and it went in perfectly (Thanks NMviperguy!).

I also used the stock box - I really didn't want to spend any more money than I had to - I've got some other mods I'm interested in doing.

Anyway, at first I thought there was a bit too much woofer movement (from the ported stock box) which caused vibration during songs with a lot of bass. So I filled the stock speaker box's interior crevices with some foam and it improved quite a bit with less air available. But at higher volume (and I mean HIGHER volume) I was still getting a bit of vibration from the sub's cone back-and-forth movement. I think normally I wouldn't have noticed the vibration in a regular positioned sub, but since the Viper's sub is only a few inches from the driver, I could hear it and stuff like that tends to annoy me.

So, I removed the upper port's screen cover (just pops off) and filled the tube with a rolled up black sock (yeah I know -a sock?) Anyway, that worked and it was the magical setup for me! With the air tube blocked and some foam crammed into the box's interior crevices, it really hits hard with no vibration. I can crank up my RB1 radio to about 3 1/2 clicks from full volume and all it does is thump!

I got the sub on Amazon for $149 and the spacers on eBay for $6.99 (1/2") and $9.99 (1"). I also bought the sub screen cover ($16.99) on Amazon so it matches the other top screen and the door speakers. I bought two 14" square foam pieces (1" and 2") from Hobby lobby for less than $5.00 total. The sock was free.

Thanks again to NMviperguy for figuring out how to do this in the first place. :dancingman:

I got the sub on Amazon for $149 and the spacers on eBay for $6.99 (1/2") and $9.99 (1"). I also bought the sub screen cover ($16.99) on Amazon so it matches the other top screen and the door speakers. I bought two 14" square foam pieces (1" and 2") from Hobby lobby for less than $5.00 total. The sock was free.

Thanks again to NMviperguy for figuring out how to do this in the first place. :dancingman:

Haha, glad I could help. Where are the pictures??

Here's a photo of my JL sub install - I didn't post one before because, minus the speaker cover, it looks just like the pic you posted...

It sounds a whole lot better than the old stock one...:dude3:

Yes - I kept the stock amp. The install was really straight forward and the sub went in without any issues. I have the Mopar iPod interface connected to my RB1 radio and it really is a pleasure to listen to actually feel my music in the Viper!

I am not using the stock amp or deck. I'd love to take credit for this but bought the car with these amps installed.13617

Here is the passenger side floor box. I'm 5'11" and still fit. The box is .5 cubic feet. 8" Sub will fit good i can make a 10" fit but you will lose a little more space.

Do have Any dimensions on the size of the speaker box?

I am wanting to change the speakers in my Viper. What are the dimensions of the speakers? I especially need the center Sub in the center console. Width and depth of it. Can I fit an 8" Sub or does it have to be a 6.5" Sub? there is a Digital Design here that it depth 4.5" ?

What does all the experts say?

NMviperguy

So I don't know the depth but it is a 6.5 on the bottom and a 4 inch on the top. I put a sub in both, earlier in this thread I explain how I use 2 spacers with no rattle or distortion to allow a much deeper sub.

Does anyone know what size the 4 factory screws are which hold the sub in? Or for those who have done the upgrade to the JL 6w3, what screws are you using? Today amd yesterday I took mine apart to do the JL in the stock box.

My factory sub had previously been changed to a Kicker, which was screwed directly to the factory box. I screwed the 1" spacer to the box, then re-installed the bulkhead cover. When I go to put the 1/2" spacer amd sub in there, just not sure if I should be using a long screw and trying to go through the sub, 1/2" spacer and the 1" spacer into the box, or just screws to get through the sub and 1/2" into the 1"? And did you trim the 4 tabs on the bulkhead cover, or left them there between the 1/2" and 1" spacers?

Thanks,
Darren
